Portosystemic Shunt

Aussi appelé: PSS, Congenital Portosystemic Shunt, Portocaval Shunt, Portoazygos Shunt

Revu par un vétérinaireCatDogUrgence: HighFréquence: Uncommon

En bref

A portosystemic shunt (PSS) is an abnormal blood vessel that bypasses the liver, allowing toxins to build up in the bloodstream and causing neurological, digestive, and urinary issues in dogs and cats.

Anatomy diagram of a canine portosystemic shunt bypassing the liver.
A portosystemic shunt diverts toxin-rich blood away from the liver, sending it directly into systemic circulation.

TL;DR.

  • Signes neurologiques (cardinal) postprandiaux
  • Retard de croissance, vomissements, diarrhée
  • Polyurie/polydipsie, cristaux d'urate
  • Hypersalivation (chats)

A small puppy showing lethargy and head pressing behavior.

"Portosystemic shunts (PSS) are abnormal vessels that divert blood from the abdominal viscera to the heart, bypassing the hepatic sinusoids..."

An ultrasound scan of a dog's liver showing abnormal blood flow.
