The map is a visual layer. Every route also has crawlable text, sources and an accessible checklist.
A return journey can involve four separate procedures: export, destination entry, destination exit and re-entry. Peqaboo assesses each procedure separately.
Hong Kong is a non-designated region for Japan. The order is strict: chip, two qualifying rabies vaccinations, designated-lab titer, 180-day wait, 40-day notice, exam and government certificate.
Japan is Hong Kong Group I, but return is manifested cargo only. Plan the Special Permit, Group I certificate, carrier affidavit and Japan export inspection before leaving.
Hong Kong is treated under Taiwan’s rabies-infected route. A normal first import needs microchip, qualifying inactivated rabies vaccine, titer ≥0.5 IU/ml sampled 180 days to one year before entry, permit and quarantine.
Taiwan is Hong Kong Group II. A short Hong Kong round trip generally fails without the residence-waiver work completed before departure.
Korea’s current booklet requires microchip, exporting-government certificate, and, conservatively for Hong Kong, rabies antibody ≥0.5 IU/ml sampled 30 days to 24 months before shipment.
Korea is Hong Kong Group II. A Hong Kong resident short return needs the same pre-departure residence-waiver and cargo process as Taiwan.
For CDC dog-rabies purposes, the current high-risk list expressly excludes Hong Kong from “China”. A dog that has been only in low-risk or rabies-free places for 6 months still must be healthy, at least 6 months old, microchipped and accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. Cats follow lighter federal animal-health rules, but the destination state can add requirements.
Continental US is Hong Kong Group II. A Hong Kong-resident pet on a short round trip needs the residence-waiver work completed before leaving Hong Kong; return is manifested cargo with a Special Permit and the applicable certificate.
Hong Kong is on Great Britain’s listed-country table and uses a Great Britain pet health certificate. For this standard non-commercial path: microchip first, valid rabies vaccination, wait 21 full days after a primary vaccination, dog tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival, current official certificate, non-sale declaration, and an approved route and carrier. Northern Ireland has different rules.
Great Britain is Hong Kong Group I. Return still requires a Hong Kong Special Permit, current Group I veterinary certificate, carrier affidavit and manifested-cargo acceptance; an outbound approved route does not create a passenger-baggage return option.
Hong Kong is an approved Australian Group 3 country. The controlling chain is: readable microchip, optional official identity verification, continuous rabies vaccination, RNATT ≥0.5 IU/ml, 180-day eligibility period, BICON import permit, Mickleham booking, species-specific tests and parasite treatments, final examination and official certificate. This is a relocation-grade process, not a normal holiday workflow.
Australia is Hong Kong Group I, but return remains a separate Hong Kong import: Special Permit, current Group I certificate, carrier affidavit and manifested cargo. Keep all Hong Kong export records and confirm the Australian export certification path before departure.
Hong Kong is a New Zealand Category 3 place (rabies absent or well controlled). This record deliberately follows the 2026 IHS as one coherent pack: official identification timing, continuously valid rabies vaccination, RNATT ≥0.5 IU/ml taken 3–12 months before shipment, permit, quarantine booking, species-specific tests/treatments and official certification. A 9-month transition allows either the complete 2021 or complete 2026 process until 1 April 2027, not a mixture.
New Zealand is Hong Kong Group I. Return is still manifested cargo with a Hong Kong Special Permit, Group I certificate and carrier affidavit. Preserve the original Hong Kong export evidence and obtain New Zealand export certification before return.
Canada’s official answer branches by species, age, purpose and whether the owner accompanies the animal. Hong Kong is not on CFIA’s current rabies-free-country list. For a standard adult personal dog or cat, a valid rabies vaccination certificate in English or French that clearly identifies the animal is the usual document; an eligible RNATT is an alternative in the federal reference. Puppies, kittens, unaccompanied young dogs, adoption/resale and assistance dogs must not inherit the adult-personal result.
Canada is Hong Kong Group II. A Hong Kong-resident pet taking a short round trip needs the AFCD residence-waiver route completed before departure; return is manifested cargo with a Special Permit, current certificate and carrier affidavit.

Government-ready does not guarantee that the operating carrier accepts the pet, breed, crate and date. BOAS policies are especially restrictive.

A general “pet friendly” label is not a compliance standard. Compare cabin, hold and cargo policies, route restrictions, aircraft, BOAS, weight, booking lead time and official policy sources.
Ordinary pets use Cathay Cargo, not the normal cabin or checked-baggage flow.
BOASRoute, season and shipper-qualification conditions apply. Exact written acceptance is mandatory.
Ordinary pets are not accepted in the cabin or hold; assistance dogs are a separate process.
BOASNot applicable: ordinary pets are not accepted.
The current public cargo page says live animals are not accepted.
BOASNot applicable to ordinary pets.
Dogs, cats and rabbits can travel as checked baggage; ordinary pets are not accepted in cabin.
BOASSeasonal embargoes vary by hemisphere and destination; written flight-specific confirmation is required.
Passenger checked-pet and cargo are separate policies; never merge them.
BOASCargo publishes a limited December–March pathway for listed routes/breeds with journey-time and larger-crate conditions; confirm every shipment.
International accompanied pets travel in the hold; unaccompanied pets use JAL Cargo.
BOASFrench Bulldogs and Bulldogs are not accepted year-round; other short-nosed breeds receive heightened May–October warnings.
Full charter, membership, shared public charter and empty legs are different products. Border, biosecurity, airport and manifested-cargo rules still apply.
