Pleural effusion is a life-threatening accumulation of fluid around the lungs in dogs and cats. Recognizing signs like rapid breathing, increased effort, or an abnormal "paradoxical" breathing pattern is critical for seeking immediate veterinary emergency care.

Hva er det?

Unormal væske i pleurahulen. Inndeles i rent/modifisert transsudat og eksudat etter protein og celler. Et tegn på underliggende sykdom, ikke en egen sykdom.

Årsaker og risikofaktorer

Hjertesvikt, pyothorax, neoplasi, chylothorax, hemothorax (traume/rottegift), FIP hos katt.

Tegn

  • Takypné, respirasjonsarbeid, dyspné
  • Dempede hjerte- og respirasjonslyder
  • Paradoksal respirasjon, anstrengelsesintoleranse, letargi
  • Blek eller cyanotisk slimhinne i alvorlige tilfeller

Diagnostikk

Undersøkelse, torakocentese, væskeanalyse (gullstandard), røntgen/ultralyd etter stabilisering; CT eller kirurgi ved behov.

Behandling

Akutt drenasje + oksygen. Etter årsak: dren/antibiotika (pyothorax), hjertemidler/diuretika, svært fettfattig kost/kirurgi (chylothorax), palliasjon (neoplasi), kirurgi (traume).

Prognose

Avhenger av årsaken: pyothorax god til utmerket; neoplasi ofte dårlig; hjerte/chylothorax reservert til moderat.

Forebygging

Regelmessige sjekker, katter innendørs, unngå gress med snerp, ikke ignorer respirasjonsendringer.

Når man skal ringe veterinæren

Akutt ved munnpusting, >40 pust/min i hvile, bukpusting, avvikende slimhinner eller kollaps.
