Pleural effusion is a life-threatening accumulation of fluid around the lungs in dogs and cats. Recognizing signs like rapid breathing, increased effort, or an abnormal "paradoxical" breathing pattern is critical for seeking immediate veterinary emergency care.

TL;DR. Accumulation de liquide autour des poumons qui restreint la respiration ; urgence nécessitant un drainage et le traitement de la cause.
Le liquide comprime les poumons et empêche leur expansion complète.
Qu'est-ce que c'est ?
Liquide anormal dans la cavité pleurale. Classé en transsudat pur/modifié et exsudat selon protéines et cellules. C'est un signe d'une maladie sous-jacente, pas une maladie unique.
Causes et facteurs de risque
Insuffisance cardiaque, pyothorax, néoplasie, chylothorax, hémothorax (trauma/raticides), PIF chez le chat.
Signes à surveiller
- Tachypnée, effort respiratoire, dyspnée
- Bruits cardiaques et pulmonaires assourdis
- Respiration paradoxale, intolérance à l'effort, léthargie
- Gencives pâles ou cyanosées dans les cas graves

L'effort abdominal marqué est un signe clé.
Diagnostic
Examen clinique, thoracocentèse, analyse du liquide (gold standard), radiographie/échographie après stabilisation ; CT ou chirurgie si besoin.

La thoracocentèse soulage la respiration et fournit un échantillon diagnostic.
Traitement
Drainage d'urgence + oxygène. Selon la cause : drains/antibiotiques (pyothorax), médicaments cardiaques/diurétiques, régime très bas en graisses/chirurgie (chylothorax), palliation (néoplasie), chirurgie (trauma).
Pronostic
Dépend de la cause : pyothorax bon à excellent ; néoplasie souvent mauvais ; cœur/chylothorax réservé à acceptable.
Prévention
Contrôles réguliers, chats en intérieur, surveillance des graminées, ne pas ignorer les changements respiratoires.
Quand appeler le vétérinaire
Urgent en cas de respiration bouche ouverte, >40 respirations/min au repos, respiration abdominale, muqueuses anormales ou collapsus.
