Pericardial effusion is a life-threatening veterinary emergency where fluid builds up in the sac surrounding the heart. This pressure prevents the heart from filling with blood, leading to weakness, breathing difficulties, and potential collapse. Immediate veterinary intervention is critical to drain the fluid and restore normal heart function.

Wat is het?
Vochtophoping in het hartzakje die het hart comprimeert (tamponade) en het hartminuutvolume verlaagt.
"Cardiac tamponade develops when pericardial fluid accumulation raises intrapericardial pressure to or above the normal diastolic pressure of the right side of the heart, preventing normal filling."
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Neoplasie (hemangiosarcoom, chemodectoom) en idiopathisch hemorragisch; grote rassen: golden, labrador, sint-bernard, Duitse herder.
Signalen
- Gedempte harttonen (cardinaal)
- Dyspneu, inspanningsintolerantie, ascites, bleke slijmvliezen
- Collaps, zwakke pols
Ascites weerspiegelt rechterstuwing.
Diagnostiek
Echocardiografie (goud); röntgen (globoïd hart); ECG (lage voltage, elektrische alternans); vochtanalyse.
Echo toont het comprimerende vocht.
Behandeling
Pericardiocentese spoed. Geen diuretica/vasodilatoren vóór drainage. Steroïden bij idiopathisch; pericardiectomie bij recidief.
Prognose
Idiopathisch vaak goed. Neoplastisch: gereserveerd tot slecht.
Preventie
Geen specifieke preventie; controles bij risicorassen.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Dyspneu, collaps, bleke/blauwe slijmvliezen, strakke buik: spoed niveau 5.
