Intussusception is a life-threatening veterinary emergency where one segment of the intestine telescopes into another, causing a severe blockage and cutting off blood flow. Prompt surgical intervention is typically required to save the animal's life.

Wat is het?
Mechanische obstructie. Mesenterium gecomprimeerd: ischemie, necrose, septische peritonitis bij ruptuur. Maximale urgentie.
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Parasieten, parvovirus, vreemde voorwerpen, gastroenteritis, tumoren. Predispositie: Duitse herder, labradoodle, golden retriever; jongeren vaker.
Signalen
- Braken
- Buikpijn
- Schaarse bloederige diarree
- Voelbare worstvormige massa
- Anorexie, depressie
Ernstige buikpijn en strakke buik zijn typisch.
Diagnostiek
Palpatie, echo (schietschijfpatroon), röntgen, contrastklysma of colonoscopie. Exploratieve laparotomie.
Behandeling
Chirurgie: reductie als vitaal, anders resectie en anastomose. Vocht, pijnstilling, antibiotica.
Prognose
Vaak goed bij vroege chirurgie zonder peritonitis.
Preventie
Ontwormen, vaccineren, langzame dieetwissels, geen inslikbare objecten.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Meteen bij aanhoudend braken, hevige buikpijn, bloederige schaarse ontlasting of collaps.
