Wat is het?
Bètaceltumor met ongeremde insulinesecretie, hypoglykemie en energietekort in de hersenen.
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Neoplasie; predispositie Duitse herder, labrador, golden, boxer, cocker, Siamees. Bij fretten frequent.
Signalen
- Zwakte en insulten (cardinaal)
- Collaps, ataxie, lethargie
- Vreemd gedrag, trillen, polyfagie
Zwakte en lethargie zijn vroege tekenen.
Diagnostiek
Seruminsuline bij gedocumenteerde hypoglykemie; laag fructosamine; CT/echo; chirurgische exploratie.
Beeldvorming helpt de tumor te lokaliseren.
Behandeling
Spoed: dextrose en corticosteroïden. Chirurgie bij voorkeur. Medisch: diazoxide, octreotide, streptozocine, frequente maaltijden.
Prognose
Genezing zeldzaam; met operatie en medicatie vaak langere overleving.
Preventie
Geen primaire preventie; glucose bij risico-seniors.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Insulten, collaps, extreme zwakte: spoed. Siroop op het tandvlees alleen bij bewustzijn.
