El pus se acumula en el espacio pleural alrededor de los pulmones.
¿Qué es?
Exudado séptico en la cavidad pleural. El volumen comprime el pulmón y causa dificultad respiratoria. Puede evolucionar a inflamación sistémica y sepsis. Urgencia máxima.
Causas y factores de riesgo
Gato a menudo idiopático (bacterias orofaríngeas sospechadas). Perro: trauma, cuerpos extraños vegetales, heridas, neumonía con rotura. Sin predisposición racial documentada.
Signos a vigilar
- Taquipnea
- Respiración abdominal marcada
- Sonidos pulmonares disminuidos
- Fiebre, letargia, anorexia
- Pérdida de peso, deshidratación; SIRS/shock séptico posible
Respiración forzada con cuello extendido y boca abierta es emergencia.
Cómo lo diagnostican los veterinarios
Radiografías torácicas, citología del líquido (estándar de oro), Gram, cultivos aerobios/anaerobios, ecografía, TC si se sospecha cuerpo extraño.
La ecografía localiza bolsas de líquido y guía drenajes.
Opciones de tratamiento
Tubos torácicos, lavado, antibióticos i.v. de amplio espectro, fluidos. Orales 4–6 semanas. Cirugía si falla el manejo médico o hay cuerpo extraño/absceso.
Pronóstico
Regular a bueno con tratamiento agresivo precoz; gatos con tubos a menudo sobreviven bien. Los primeros días son críticos.
Prevención
Evitar hierbas altas/espigas; pelear; tratar heridas y tos pronto; higiene dental en gatos.
Cuándo llamar al veterinario
De inmediato ante dificultad respiratoria, cianosis, colapso o fiebre alta con anorexia.
