In breve

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common and serious heart disease primarily affecting cats, and occasionally dogs, characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. This guide covers symptoms, genetic risks, diagnostic tests, and treatment options.

Comparison diagram of a normal cat heart and a cat heart with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the muscular wall of the left ventricle becomes abnormally thick, reducing the space available for blood.

TL;DR.

Razze: Maine Coon, Ragdoll cats, American Shorthair, Persian, British Shorthair, Norwegian Forest Cat, Scottish Fold, Bengal Cat. Escludere ipertensione e ipertiroidismo.

Segni da osservare

  • Comuni: tachipnea, dispnea, letargia; a volte asintomatica
  • Occasionali: sincope, paralisi acuta degli arti posteriori (ATE)

A cat showing signs of respiratory distress with an open mouth and extended neck.
Respiro a bocca aperta nel gatto è emergenza.

Diagnosi

Eco cardiaca, radiografie, ECG, pressione arteriosa, T4.

An echocardiogram screen displaying a cross-section of a feline heart.
L'eco misura spessore e funzione.

Trattamento

Prognosi

Molto variabile; dopo ICC o ATE più riservata.

Prevenzione

Screening nelle razze a rischio; nessuna prevenzione primaria affidabile per tutti.

Quando chiamare il veterinario

Emergenza: respiro a bocca aperta, tachipnea a riposo, collasso, paralisi posteriore acuta.

Razze specifiche

Proprietari di Maine Coon, Ragdoll cats: discutere eco di screening.
