Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common and serious heart disease primarily affecting cats, and occasionally dogs, characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. This guide covers symptoms, genetic risks, diagnostic tests, and treatment options.

TL;DR. Cardiopatía frecuente, a menudo genética (sobre todo en gatos): engrosamiento del ventrículo izquierdo con riesgo de insuficiencia y trombos.

¿Qué es?
Engrosamiento primario del miocardio del VI, disfunción diastólica, congestión pulmonar y posible tromboembolia arterial.
Causas y factores de riesgo
Herencia. Mutaciones en Maine Coon y Ragdoll. También American Shorthair, Persian, British Shorthair, Norwegian Forest Cat, Scottish Fold, Bengal Cat.
Signos a vigilar
Frecuentes
- Disnea; taquipnea en reposo
- Soplo sistólico; taquicardia
- Edema pulmonar, derrame pleural, ICC
Ocasionales
- Tromboembolia (parálisis trasera)
- Arritmias, síncope, muerte súbita

Respiración bucal y cuello extendido: urgencia respiratoria en gatos.
Diagnóstico
Eco (estándar de oro); radiografías; ECG; presión arterial; genética en razas de riesgo.

La ecocardiografía mide el grosor parietal.
Tratamiento
Furosemide en congestión; Clopidogrel/Aspirin; Atenolol, Diltiazem, Nitroglycerin, Spironolactone según el caso.
Pronóstico
Subclínica: años posibles. Tras ICC o trombo: reservado.
Prevención
Cribado genético y eco en razas de riesgo; peso saludable.
Cuándo llamar al veterinario
Urgencia: respiración bucal; FR reposo >40; colapso; parálisis trasera dolorosa; mucosas pálidas/cianóticas.
Para razas específicas
Dueños de Maine Coon, Ragdoll y otras razas listadas: hablar de cribado.
