Strangles is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection in horses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. Characterized by fever, swollen lymph nodes, and nasal discharge, it requires strict biosecurity and targeted veterinary care to prevent spread and manage complications like guttural pouch infections.

Wat is het?
Streptococcus equi subsp. equi. Abcessen van halslymfeknopen kunnen de luchtweg vernauwen.
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Alleen equiden. Direct of via fomieten. Jonge paarden en drukbezochte stallen.
Signalen
- Koorts vaak eerst
- Futloosheid, anorexie
- Submandibulaire lymfadenopathie met pus
- Dyspneu bij compressie (spoed)
Submandibulaire zwelling is klassiek.
Diagnostiek
Kliniek + PCR/kweek; endoscopie van luchtzakken bij dragerschap.
Behandeling
Supportief; penicilline G op indicatie; lokale luchtzakbehandeling bij empyeem.
Prognose
Meestal goed; risico stille drager, purpura hemorrhagica.
Preventie
Quarantaine 21 dagen, isolatie van koortsende paarden, eigen materiaal, hygiëne, vaccinatie naar risico.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Spoed: lawaaiige dyspneu, slikproblemen, hoge koorts, oedemen of petechiën.
