Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome

Også kendt som: Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, Brachycephalic Syndrome, BOAS, BAS, Upper airway obstruction syndrome

Kort sagt

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a common, inherited condition affecting flat-faced pets. It occurs when compressed facial anatomy restricts airflow, causing severe breathing difficulties, heat intolerance, and digestive issues. Early surgical intervention is highly effective at restoring normal breathing and preventing life-threatening airway collapse.

Anatomical comparison of a normal dog airway versus a compressed brachycephalic airway.
The anatomical differences between a normal canine airway and the crowded, obstructed airway of a brachycephalic dog.

TL;DR. Arvelig luftvejssygdom hos fladnæsede racer: trange luftveje, inspiratorisk anstrengelse, varmeintolerance, kollapsrisiko; ofte kirurgi.

Normal luftvej versus komprimeret brachycefal luftvej.

Hvad er det?

Overskud af bløddelsvæv i kort kranium: stenotiske næsebor, forlænget bløde gane, evt. hypoplastisk trakea; undertryk og sekundær larynxkollaps.

Årsager og risikofaktorer

Medfødt brachycefali. Hund: mops, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Boxer, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Boston Terrier. Kat: perser, himalaya. Værre ved fedme og varme.

Tegn

  • Inspiratorisk anstrengelse (kardinal)
  • Stertor, stridor, snorken, anstrengelses-/varmeintolerance, opkast/regurgitation
  • Akut: cyanose, kollaps, kraftig stridor

A French Bulldog showing signs of severe respiratory distress and open-mouth breathing.
Mundånding og udstrakt tunge tyder på nød.

Diagnostik

Undersøgelse; laryngoskopi under sedation (guld); endoskopi, thoraxrøntgen, evt. blodgas.

An endoscopic view of an elongated soft palate blocking the larynx.
Forlænget blød gane blokerer larynx.

Behandling

Akut: ilt, køling, sedation, Glucocorticoids. Kirurgi: udvidelse af næsebor, stafylektomi, sakkelresektion.

Prognose

God ved tidlig kirurgi; forsigtig ved fremskreden larynxkollaps.

Forebyggelse

Ansvarlig avl, slank vægt, undgå varme, sele (ikke halsbånd).

Hvornår ringe til dyrlæge

Akut: cyanose, kollaps, ukontrollerbar hiven, strakt hals/albuer ud, feber med åndenød.
