Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome

También conocido como: Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, Brachycephalic Syndrome, BOAS, BAS, Upper airway obstruction syndrome

CatDogUrgencia: HighFrecuencia: Common

En resumen

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a common, inherited condition affecting flat-faced pets. It occurs when compressed facial anatomy restricts airflow, causing severe breathing difficulties, heat intolerance, and digestive issues. Early surgical intervention is highly effective at restoring normal breathing and preventing life-threatening airway collapse.

Anatomical comparison of a normal dog airway versus a compressed brachycephalic airway.
The anatomical differences between a normal canine airway and the crowded, obstructed airway of a brachycephalic dog.

TL;DR.

Perros: pug, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Boxer, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Boston Terrier. Gatos: persa, himalayo. Empeora con obesidad y calor.

Signos

  • Esfuerzo inspiratorio (cardinal)
  • Estertor, estridor, ronquidos, intolerancia al ejercicio/calor, vómitos/regurgitación
  • Urgencia: cianosis, colapso, estridor intenso

A French Bulldog showing signs of severe respiratory distress and open-mouth breathing.
Respiración bucal y lengua fuera indican distrés.

Diagnóstico

Examen; laringoscopia bajo sedación (oro); endoscopia, radiografía torácica, a veces gasometría.

An endoscopic view of an elongated soft palate blocking the larynx.
Paladar blando alargado obstruyendo la laringe.

Tratamiento

Cría responsable, peso magro, evitar calor, arnés (no collar).

Cuándo llamar al veterinario

Urgencia: cianosis, colapso, jadeo incontrolable, cuello extendido/codos abiertos, fiebre con dificultad respiratoria.
