Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome

Aussi appelé: Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, Brachycephalic Syndrome, BOAS, BAS, Upper airway obstruction syndrome

Revu par un vétérinaireCatDogUrgence: HighFréquence: Common

En bref

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a common, inherited condition affecting flat-faced pets. It occurs when compressed facial anatomy restricts airflow, causing severe breathing difficulties, heat intolerance, and digestive issues. Early surgical intervention is highly effective at restoring normal breathing and preventing life-threatening airway collapse.

Anatomical comparison of a normal dog airway versus a compressed brachycephalic airway.
The anatomical differences between a normal canine airway and the crowded, obstructed airway of a brachycephalic dog.

TL;DR. Affection respiratoire héréditaire des races à face plate : voies étroites, effort inspiratoire, intolérance à la chaleur, risque de collapsus ; chirurgie souvent nécessaire.

Voie aérienne normale versus voie comprimée brachycéphale.

Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

Tissus mous excessifs dans un crâne court : narines sténosées, palais mou allongé, parfois trachée hypoplasique ; pression négative et collapsus laryngé secondaire.

Causes et facteurs de risque

Congénital brachycéphale. Chiens : carlin, French Bulldog, English Bulldog, Boxer, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Boston Terrier. Chats : persan, himalayen. Aggravé par obésité et chaleur.

Signes

  • Effort inspiratoire (cardinal)
  • Stertor, stridor, ronflements, intolérance effort/chaleur, vomissements/régurgitation
  • Urgence : cyanose, collapsus, stridor intense

A French Bulldog showing signs of severe respiratory distress and open-mouth breathing.
Respiration buccale et langue sortie indiquent une détresse.

Diagnostic

Examen ; laryngoscopie sous sédation (or) ; endoscopie, radio thoracique, parfois gaz du sang.

An endoscopic view of an elongated soft palate blocking the larynx.
Palais mou allongé obstruant le larynx.

Traitement

Urgences : oxygène, refroidissement, sédation, Glucocorticoids. Chirurgie : élargissement des narines, staphylectomie, résection des saccules.

Pronostic
