Ferret adrenal disease is a highly common hormonal disorder in pet ferrets over three years of age. Unlike canine Cushing's disease, it is driven by elevated sex hormones rather than cortisol, causing progressive hair loss, skin issues, and behavioral changes. Wat is het?
Abnormale groei van de bijnierschors (hyperplasie, adenoom, soms adenocarcinoom). Bij freten domineren geslachtshormonen, niet cortisol.
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Zeer vroege castratie; langdurige kunstmatige fotoperiode; middelbare tot hogere leeftijd.
Signalen
- Cardinaal: symmetrische alopecia vanaf de staart; vulvazwelling bij gesteriliseerde vrouwtjes
- Vaak: jeuk, dunne/vette huid, loopsheidsgeur, agressie/bestijgen, prostaatvergroting (mannetjes)
- Soms: oestrogene anemie, spierverlies
Abdomen-echo is de gouden standaard om bijnieren te visualiseren.
Diagnostiek
Onderzoek + alopecia-patroon. Abdomen-echo (gouden standaard). Geslachtshormoonpanel.
Behandeling
Adrenalectomie (idealiter curatief). Medisch: leuprolide, melatonine; soms mitotaan. Urologische spoed bij mannetjes.
Prognose
Uitstekend bij geslaagde chirurgie of langdurige medische controle. Onbehandeld: slecht.
Preventie
Melatonine-implantaten in sommige protocollen; natuurlijk licht-donker-ritme; regelmatige exotencontroles.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Spoed: mannetje met plasproblemen; extreme zwakte/bleke slijmvliezen; ernstige buikpijn of totale anorexie.
