Demodicosis
Ook bekend als: Canine Demodicosis, Demodectic Mange
Kort samengevat
Demodicosis, also known as demodectic mange, is a common canine skin disease caused by an overpopulation of microscopic Demodex mites. Learn how to recognize the signs—such as hair loss and skin redness—how veterinarians diagnose it using deep skin scrapes, and the treatment steps needed to clear the infection.

TL;DR. Overgroei van Demodex-mijten in haarfollikels: haaruitval en huidirritatie; diagnose en behandeling tot 6 maanden.
Demodex leeft normaal in de follikel; ziekte bij overpopulatie.
Wat is het?
Overgrowth of normal Demodex mites in hair follicles (demodectic mange). Not highly contagious adult-to-adult. Classify localized vs generalized; juvenile-onset vs adult-onset (often secondary to immune suppression).
Oorzaken en risicofactoren
Immune control fails: stress, endoparasites, poor nutrition, immunosuppressive drugs, underlying disease (e.g. Cushing, hypothyroidism, cancer). Higher risk: Rat Terrier, English Bulldog, Chinese Shar-Pei.
Signalen
- Alopecia (cardinal)
- Scaling, erythema (common)
- Secondary pyoderma; pododemodicosis (occasional)
- Fever, anorexia if deep infection (rare; emergency)

Pleksgewijze alopecia rond ogen en gezicht is klassiek.
Diagnostiek
Deep skin scrape (gold standard: pinch then scrape to capillary bleed). Hair plucks near eyes/paws. Biopsy if scrapes negative (esp. thick-skinned breeds like Shar-Pei).

Diepe huidafkrabsels zijn de gouden standaard.
Behandeling
Localized juvenile: often self-limiting; treat predisposing factors. Generalized: long course (up to 6 months). Amitraz dips or Ivermectin (caution MDR1 herding breeds). Continue past clinical cure until 2 consecutive negative scrapes weeks apart.
Prognose
Localized juvenile: excellent. Generalized juvenile: good with consistent therapy. Adult-onset: depends on underlying disease.
Preventie
Support immunity, parasite control, minimize stress, cautious immunosuppressants. Do not breed dogs with generalized demodicosis.
Wanneer de dierenarts bellen
Any patchy alopecia or red/scaly skin. Emergency: fever, anorexia, severe depression, deep oozing foot lesions.
