Hypothyroidism

Aussi appelé: Canine hypothyroidism, Thyroid hormone deficiency

En bref

Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder in dogs caused by an underactive thyroid gland. It slows down metabolism, leading to weight gain, lethargy, and skin issues, but is highly manageable with daily thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

A tired Golden Retriever with a dull coat sitting calmly.
Hypothyroidism often causes subtle signs like lethargy and a dull coat, which can easily be mistaken for normal aging.

TL;DR. Deficit hormonal frequent et tres traitable; traitement quotidien restaure energie et pelage.

Lethargie et pelage terne se confondent avec le vieillissement.

Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

Thyroid underproduces T4/T3; metabolism slows. Mostly dogs (lymphocytic thyroiditis or idiopathic atrophy). Rare in cats; often iatrogenic after hyperthyroid treatment.

Causes et facteurs de risque

Primary gland damage common. Middle-aged dogs (often 2-6 y); genetic breeds may present earlier.

Signes à surveiller

  • Lethargy, weight gain, endocrine alopecia (common)
  • Dull coat; pyoderma; hypercholesterolemia (common)
  • Bradycardia; myxedema (occasional)

Alopécie en queue de rat: signe dermatologique classique.

Comment les vétérinaires diagnostiquent

TT4, free T4 by equilibrium dialysis, endogenous TSH, TGAA. Rule out euthyroid sick syndrome.

Options de traitement

Lifelong Levothyroxine. Energy often improves in 1-2 weeks; coat over weeks to months. Retest T4 about 4-6 h post-pill.

Pronostic

Excellent with correct dosing. Daily lifelong therapy required.

Prévention

No primary prevention. Breeders: TGAA/thyroid panel. Interpret sighthound/Nordic T4 ranges carefully.

Quand appeler le vétérinaire

Check unexplained weight gain, chronic skin disease, persistent lethargy. Emergency myxedema coma: stupor, collapse, hypothermia, dyspnea.
