Protein and muscle in cats: what quality really means, and the four-point muscle check
A cat cannot downregulate protein breakdown, so a low-protein diet is paid for out of muscle. What crude protein does and does not tell you, how to convert wet and dry foods to a dry matter basis, why senior cats need more protein rather than less, and a four-point muscle condition check to do monthly at home.

Quick answer
Protein is the one nutrient a cat cannot economise on. What the bowl delivers, the body either uses or takes from muscle.
A cat is not a small dog with a taste for meat. Its liver runs the enzymes that break amino acids down for energy at a permanently high setting, and it cannot turn them down when dietary protein falls.
That single fact drives everything here. If the diet supplies too little protein, or protein of poor quality, the cat does not slow its protein burn. It keeps burning, and the shortfall comes out of muscle. The result is a cat that looks fine on the scales and is quietly disappearing underneath its coat.
- Crude protein on a label is a nitrogen measurement. It cannot tell you whether the protein is digestible or whether the amino acids are the right ones.
- Wet and dry foods can only be compared after converting both to a dry matter basis. Comparing the printed numbers directly is meaningless.
- "Less protein for senior cats" is backwards. Older cats often digest protein less well and need more, not less.
- Protein restriction is a treatment for diagnosed kidney disease, not a precaution for a healthy old cat.

Why protein is different for a cat
The liver does not have a low gear.
In an omnivore, low dietary protein triggers the liver to conserve amino acids by reducing the enzymes that deaminate them. The cat's version of that regulation is limited. Those enzymes run near their maximum regardless of what arrives in the bowl.
The practical consequence is that a cat on a low protein diet does not adapt. It runs a continuous deficit and pays for it out of lean tissue. This is why the same diet change that makes a dog slightly slimmer can make a cat visibly wasted.
Taurine is lost, not recycled.
Cats conjugate bile acids with taurine and cannot switch to glycine the way other species can. Taurine therefore leaves the body every day in bile whether the diet replaces it or not, and cats synthesise very little from cysteine.
The consequences of running short are not subtle: dilated cardiomyopathy, and central retinal degeneration that ends in permanent blindness. Both were common in cats before commercial foods were supplemented, and both reappear in home prepared and unbalanced raw diets.
Arginine failure is measured in hours.
Arginine drives the urea cycle, which disposes of the ammonia produced by all that protein breakdown. A cat given a meal lacking arginine can develop clinical hyperammonaemia rapidly. There is no slow decline to notice.
This is the reason "I will just make his food myself from meat" is a genuinely dangerous plan rather than merely a suboptimal one.
What protein quality actually means

The scale answers a question the pack cannot. What matters is grams delivered per day, on a dry matter basis, not the percentage printed on the front.
Digestibility.
Crude protein is nitrogen multiplied by a fixed factor. Nitrogen from a highly digestible muscle or organ protein and nitrogen from feather meal, hair or connective tissue produce the same number on the label.
Manufacturers know their own digestibility figures. Labels almost never carry them. What you can use instead is indirect evidence: stool volume and quality, coat condition, and whether muscle holds up over months on that food.
Amino acid profile.
Cats have a specific requirement for taurine, arginine, methionine and cystine among others. Plant proteins are typically low in exactly these. A food can hit a high crude protein figure using pea protein and potato protein while delivering a profile that suits a cat poorly.
This is the flaw in judging a food by the protein percentage alone, and it is the flaw that grain free formulations often exploit, because the grain has usually been replaced by legumes that carry their own plant protein.
The dry matter conversion.
Wet and dry foods cannot be compared as printed, because one is mostly water. Convert both.
Divide the crude protein percentage by the dry matter percentage, which is 100 minus the moisture percentage, then multiply by 100. As an illustration, a wet food declaring 8 percent protein and 78 percent moisture has 8 divided by 22, which is roughly 36 percent protein on a dry matter basis. A dry food declaring 30 percent protein at 10 percent moisture works out at about 33 percent.
The wet food in that example is the higher protein food, despite the smaller number on the tin.
Grams per day, not percentages.
Percentages describe the food. What reaches the cat is grams of protein per day, which depends on the calorie density of the food and how much the cat actually eats. A very calorie dense food fed to appetite delivers less protein than a less dense one fed to the same calorie total.
Weigh the food. Volume measures drift by a large margin between products, and the feeding guide on the pack is a starting point rather than a prescription.
The marketing claims and what they are worth
"Real chicken is the first ingredient."
Ingredients are declared by weight as they go into the mixer, before water is driven off. Fresh chicken is largely water, so it can head the list while contributing less protein to the finished food than a dry meal listed third.
"No by-products."
By-product is a regulatory category, not a quality grade. It includes liver, heart, kidney and lung, which are more nutrient dense than skeletal muscle and which a wild cat eats first. Heart is one of the richest natural sources of taurine. A food marketed on the absence of by-products has removed the organ meat and usually replaced it with muscle meat and plant protein.
"Grain free."
Cats have no requirement for grain, so removing it is not a nutritional advantage in itself. What matters is what replaced it. Peas, lentils, potato and tapioca are carbohydrate sources too, and legumes add plant protein that shifts the amino acid profile away from the cat's needs.
"Human grade" and "raw."
Neither term describes amino acid adequacy. A raw diet built from muscle meat without added taurine and without calcium is the classic route to both blindness and fractures, and it adds a pathogen exposure for the household. Cooking does not meaningfully destroy protein quality in a properly formulated food.
"High protein."
Unregulated as a claim in most markets. Check the dry matter figure yourself.
The one line that is worth reading.
The nutritional adequacy statement. In the United States it references AAFCO, in Europe FEDIAF, and other markets vary or have no equivalent at all. It tells you which life stage the food is complete for, and whether that was established by formulation or by a feeding trial. Everything on the front of the bag is subordinate to it.
Muscle condition: the check almost nobody does

Four places tell you almost everything: the temples, the shoulder blades, either side of the spine, and the points of the hips.
Body condition scoring asks how much fat is on the cat. Muscle condition scoring asks how much lean tissue is left. They move independently, and the second is the one that predicts how a cat copes with illness.
Where to feel.
Over the skull, at the temples on either side above the eyes. Over the shoulder blades, feeling the ridge that runs down the middle of each. Either side of the spine, where the muscle should rise up on both sides of the bony bumps. Over the points of the hips at the back.
Do it with flat fingers and light pressure, on a relaxed cat, ideally during a brushing session. Long coats hide a great deal, which is exactly why the check is done by hand and not by eye.
What normal feels like.
Bone is palpable but padded. The spine feels like a central line with muscle rising either side of it, not like a row of separate knobs. The shoulder blade ridge is detectable but not sharp. The temples are gently convex.
What loss feels like, in the order it usually appears.
The head goes first in many cats. Owners describe it as the face looking bonier or older. Then the shoulder blade ridges sharpen. Then the spinous processes become individually countable. Then the hips become prominent, and the cat may start struggling to jump or to step into a high sided litter tray.
Do it monthly, and write it down.
Muscle loss is gradual and lives with the cat every day, so the person who sees the cat most is the least likely to notice. A dated note, and a photograph taken from directly above and from the side in the same light, turns an impression into evidence.
What muscle loss means, and how to tell the causes apart
Age related loss without disease.
Lean mass declines with age in cats as in people. It is slower, it is symmetrical, and it comes without changes in thirst, appetite or activity. It is also partly preventable, which is the argument for keeping protein up rather than cutting it.
Disease driven wasting.
Hyperthyroidism is the classic: eating more, losing weight and muscle, often restless, vocal at night, sometimes with a fast heart rate. Chronic kidney disease usually comes with more drinking and more urinating. Diabetes brings thirst plus a large appetite, and sometimes a flat footed hind stance. Cancer and heart disease tend to reduce appetite while the wasting continues. Chronic enteropathy shows up in the stool and in vomiting.
The differentiating question is nearly always about appetite and thirst direction. Losing muscle while eating more points somewhere different from losing muscle while eating less.
Intake failure.
Dental pain, an oral mass, or simply a food the cat has gone off will produce muscle loss with a normal looking cat and a normal looking bowl if there is another pet in the house. Painful mouths are widely under recognised because cats keep eating through them until they cannot.
Disuse.
Arthritis produces asymmetric loss, usually worse in the hind limbs, in a cat that has stopped jumping. This is muscle loss caused by pain rather than by nutrition, and feeding more protein does not fix it.
The failure mode of the usual weight loss plan
Fat cats are common and weight loss is genuinely important. The way it usually goes wrong is that calories are cut by feeding less of the same food, which cuts protein by exactly the same proportion.
The cat then loses weight from both fat and muscle. The scale rewards you and the muscle condition score gets worse.
A correct plan cuts calories while keeping protein delivery at least as high as before, which usually means switching to a food with a higher protein to calorie ratio rather than simply reducing the portion. It also means weighing food rather than scooping, weighing the cat regularly, and scoring muscle alongside body condition each month.
Weight loss in cats must also be gradual, because a cat losing weight too quickly is at risk of hepatic lipidosis, which is a liver emergency rather than a setback.
The routine that catches problems early
What never to do
Do not put a healthy older cat on a reduced protein food as a kidney precaution. There is no evidence it protects kidneys, and it costs muscle you will want later.
Do not compare a wet and a dry food using the numbers as printed.
Do not use crude protein percentage as a proxy for quality.
Do not build a home diet from meat and organ without a formulation from a veterinary nutritionist for that individual cat. The taurine, calcium and vitamin A failures are predictable and some of the damage is permanent.
Do not restrict calories in an overweight cat without protecting protein intake, and do not aim for fast loss.
Do not accept "he is just getting old" for a bony head and a sharp spine. That description covers hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes and cancer, all of which are more treatable when caught before the muscle is gone.

When to get help

The outcome worth aiming for: a cat that holds its muscle into old age, on a food chosen for what it delivers rather than what it claims.
Book an appointment for any of these:
- Muscle loss detected on the monthly check, with or without weight change
- Weight loss with an increased appetite
- Weight or muscle loss with increased thirst or urination
- A cat that has stopped jumping, or that stands on its hocks rather than its toes
- Reluctance to eat hard food, dropping food, or a smell from the mouth
- Any planned switch to a home prepared, raw or restricted diet
Bring the weight history on one scale, your muscle condition notes, the current food including a photograph of the whole label, the measured grams fed per day, and photographs of the cat from above and the side.
Expect the vet to weigh and score the cat themselves, palpate the thyroid, check the heart rate, and run bloods covering thyroid, kidney values and glucose, with a urine sample to interpret the kidney numbers properly. Muscle loss in a cat is a symptom with a short list of causes, and that panel separates most of them.
If everything comes back normal, the conversation turns to the diet itself: how much protein is genuinely being delivered per day, whether the food suits an older cat's digestion, and whether the portion has quietly fallen while the cat's needs have not.
