Taurine Deficiency

Taurine deficiency

Tierärztlich geprüftCatDogDringlichkeit: High

Kurz gesagt

Taurine deficiency is a serious nutritional shortage of an essential amino acid that can lead to life-threatening heart disease and blindness in cats and dogs. Learn about the signs, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Taurine is essential for maintaining healthy eyes and heart function in cats.

TL;DR. Taurinmangel kann dilatative Kardiomyopathie und irreversible Erblindung verursachen, ist aber bei früher Behandlung gut beherrschbar.

Taurine is essential for maintaining healthy eyes and heart function in cats.

Was ist das?

Taurine is a free amino acid concentrated in myocardium, retina, and brain. Cats cannot synthesize enough and must obtain it from animal tissues. Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and feline central retinal degeneration (FCRD). Dogs usually synthesize taurine but some breeds, diets, or gut losses still cause clinical deficiency.

Ursachen und Risikofaktoren

Unbalanced home-cooked, vegetarian/vegan, or poorly formulated commercial diets; ingredients that bind taurine and reduce absorption. Breed predisposition in some dogs and cats (see breeds).

Anzeichen

  • Cardinal: DCM (weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, labored breathing); retinal degeneration (dilated pupils, bumping into objects)
  • Occasional: pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, arterial thromboembolism, reproductive failure, hypothermia

A domestic dog resting heavily on its chest, showing signs of lethargy.
Lethargy and labored breathing are common signs of heart disease associated with taurine deficiency.

Diagnose

Whole-blood taurine preferred over plasma. Echo for DCM; NT-proBNP if available; routine bloodwork for secondary effects. Vision exam for retinal lesions.

An echocardiogram machine displaying a scan of a canine heart.
Echocardiography is used to evaluate heart function and diagnose dilated cardiomyopathy.

Behandlung

Oral Taurine supplementation. Heart failure support as needed: Furosemide, Pimobendan; critical care may add nitroglycerin, dobutamine/dopamine, digoxin, or antiarrhythmics. Switch to a complete, balanced animal-protein diet.

Prognose

Many taurine-deficient cats show improved systolic function within about 6 weeks; some can be weaned off cardiac drugs after 6-12 weeks if effusion/edema resolve. Retinal damage is permanent. Non-taurine DCM remains guarded.

Vorbeugung

Feed complete commercial diets meeting nutritional standards. Avoid unformulated home-cooked or vegan feeding. Screen high-risk breeds when advised.

Wann den Tierarzt rufen

Emergency: open-mouth or labored breathing, collapse, hind-limb paralysis/pain (saddle thrombus), cold extremities, extreme lethargy.

Bei bestimmten Rassen

Cats: Siamese predisposition reported. Dogs: Newfoundland, American Cocker Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dog, Labrador Retriever, St. Bernard, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian, English Bulldog, and others. Cocker protocol example: taurine 500 mg PO q12h with carnitine 1 g PO q12h (per source).
