Heavy Metal Toxicosis
Tunnetaan myös nimellä: Lead Poisoning, Zinc Intoxication, Lead and Zinc Intoxication, Heavy Metal Poisoning
Lyhyesti
Heavy metal toxicosis, caused by the ingestion of lead or zinc, is a life-threatening veterinary emergency. Learn the common symptoms, how veterinarians diagnose this poisoning, and the critical chelation therapies used to save affected birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses.

TL;DR. Life-threatening lead or zinc poisoning in birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses; needs urgent diagnosis and chelation therapy.
Birds are highly susceptible from household metals and cages.
Mikä se on?
Ingested lead or zinc is absorbed and damages brain, kidneys, liver, gut, and red blood cells. Signs are non-specific, so history and imaging/blood metal levels are critical. Birds are classic patients from cages and household metals.
Syyt ja riskitekijät
Lead: old paint, solder, foil, sinkers, batteries. Zinc: post-1982 US pennies, galvanized wire/cages, zippers, some ointments. Curious chewers and free-roaming birds are high risk.
Oireet
- Paresis, lethargy, seizures (common)
- Pale mucous membranes from anemia (common)
- PU/PD; anorexia; regurgitation/vomiting (common)
- Bloody stool/urine; green diarrhea in birds (common)

Radiographs help find metallic objects in the gut.
Miten eläinlääkärit diagnosoivat
Radiographs for metallic foreign bodies; blood lead level; serum zinc in proper trace-element tubes. Clean radiographs do not fully exclude dissolved metal already absorbed.
Hoito
Remove remaining metal when appropriate. Chelation: injectable Edetate Calcium Disodium, oral Succimer, sometimes Penicillamine. Support with fluids, seizure control, GI protection, nutrition. Maintain hydration during chelation.
Ennuste
Favorable if source removed early before severe kidney failure or uncontrollable seizures; guarded to poor with advanced neurologic or renal injury.
Ehkäisy
Remove pennies, lead weights, and unsafe galvanized materials. Use bird-safe caging. Store metals and ointments out of reach.
Milloin soittaa eläinlääkärille
Any suspected metal ingestion or sudden neurologic/GI signs after possible exposure: emergency vet now.
