Trancing a rabbit: why going limp is fear, not relaxation

The rabbit is not relaxed. Tonic immobility is a last-ditch antipredator response, the thing a prey animal does when it believes it has already been caught, and the physiological measurements taken during it show fear rather than calm.

A rabbit's skeleton is light relative to the power of its hind limbs. When a rabbit comes out of tonic immobility it does so abruptly and at full force, and if the body is held while the hind legs kick, the lumbar spine takes the load. Fractures and dislocations from exactly this sequence are a recognised cause of permanent hind limb paralysis in pet rabbits. If a rabbit begins to struggle, the safe move is to lower it to the floor and let go, not to grip harder.

What tonic immobility actually is
Almost every prey species has a final defence that comes after running and after fighting: going completely still.
It works because many predators respond to movement, because a motionless animal is harder to locate, and because a predator that believes its prey is dead may relax its grip long enough for an escape. It is a reflex, not a decision, and it is triggered by restraint combined with a position the animal cannot escape from.
In rabbits it is triggered reliably by inversion. Turn a rabbit onto its back, support the head, and within seconds most rabbits stop moving. The limbs may extend or go loose, the eyes may stay open, and the animal becomes unresponsive to touch and sound.
To an owner this looks like relaxation, and it is why the technique spread. The problem is that looking relaxed and being relaxed are different things, and the difference is measurable. When researchers have monitored rabbits during tonic immobility rather than simply watching them, what they found was a fear profile: heart rate and respiratory rate up, stress hormone responses present, and behaviour on recovery consistent with an animal that has had a bad experience.
The stillness is the symptom. It is what a rabbit does when it thinks it is about to be eaten.
The four costs
It is aversive, and aversion accumulates.
Rabbits learn quickly and generalise readily. A rabbit trance-handled for nail trims does not learn that nail trims are fine, it learns that being picked up predicts terror. That cost lands later, at the moment you need to get a sick rabbit into a carrier, or examine a wound, or check a bottom during fly season. The animals hardest to help are usually the ones handled this way for years.
It removes pain feedback.
This is the argument that convinces people who are unmoved by the welfare one. A conscious, non-immobile rabbit tells you immediately when you have cut into the quick, pulled a mat too hard, or touched something sore. A trance-immobile rabbit does not react at all. You will finish the job faster and you will have no idea what you did.
It also hides existing pain. A rabbit with a sore hock, a dental problem or an abdominal issue gives you nothing while immobile, so the procedure that was supposed to double as a health check delivers no information.
The recovery is violent.
Rabbits do not drift out of tonic immobility. They come out of it at once, kicking, and the whole point of the reflex is to produce an explosive escape when the moment arrives. If the rabbit's body is being held while its hind limbs deliver that kick, the force goes through the lumbar spine. This is the classic mechanism for spinal fracture and luxation in pet rabbits, and the outcome is frequently permanent.
It is not safe for a compromised rabbit.
An inverted rabbit has the weight of its abdominal contents pressing towards the diaphragm, which is a poor position for any animal with a full gut, and a genuinely bad one for a rabbit with heart or respiratory disease. Adding a strong fear response to that is not a neutral act. Rabbits die of stress, and there is no reason to put a compromised animal into a physiological fear state for a nail trim.
Telling a relaxed rabbit from a frozen one

The alternative is not doing less, it is training the handling itself, with food, at the rabbit's own pace, in the place the procedure will actually happen.
The two states look similar to a casual glance, which is exactly why the confusion persists. Read the whole animal rather than any single feature.

Use food as the test.
Fear switches feeding off in prey species. If a rabbit will accept and actually chew a favourite food, it is not in a fear state. If it will not, nothing else you observe overrides that. This single test settles more arguments about rabbit body language than any amount of ear-reading.

The food test in practice: a rabbit that comes forward, takes the food and chews it is calm. A rabbit that ignores it, however still it is being, is not.
Watch what happens at the end.
A relaxed rabbit that is released stays where it is or moves away unhurriedly. A frozen rabbit leaves at speed and does not come back. The exit is often more informative than anything during the handling.
What to do instead
The alternative is not avoiding handling. Rabbits need nails trimmed, bottoms checked, coats groomed and medicine given, and the ones that get none of that suffer more, not less. The alternative is changing the geometry and the pace.
Work at floor level.
A rabbit on the ground, with all four feet down and somewhere to go, has no reason to invoke the reflex. Sit on the floor. Most nail trims, most grooming and most health checks are possible on a non-slip mat with the rabbit standing.
This also removes the other great cause of rabbit injury, which is being dropped. If you are already on the floor, the fall distance is nothing.
Build tolerance in stages, with food.
Touch a foot, feed. Hold a foot, feed. Separate two toes, feed. Touch the clippers to a nail, feed. Cut one nail, feed, stop. Sessions of a minute or two, several times a week, get further in a fortnight than one long forced session ever does, and the rabbit ends up cooperative rather than merely defeated.
Stop before the rabbit wants to. Ending on your terms while it is still comfortable is what makes the next session easy.
Use a proper supported hold when you need one.
When a rabbit genuinely must be held, the rules are simple and they are all about the hind end. One hand or forearm supports the chest, the other supports the hindquarters so that the back cannot flex and the legs cannot kick free. The rabbit stays upright, held firmly against your body, with your body providing the surface it rests on.
A rabbit held this way, sitting on the floor, can have its belly, chest and front feet examined for a few seconds safely.
Towelling is not trancing.
Wrapping a rabbit snugly in a towel, upright, with the spine supported and the head free, is a legitimate technique for a brief procedure and is very different from inverting one. The distinction is orientation and support, not the towel.
Split the job.
Two people, one offering food and steadying, one working, is faster and safer than one person doing both. If nobody else is available, do fewer nails per session rather than restraining harder.
Rethink whether the rabbit needs inverting at all.
Most of the reasons given for trancing do not actually require it. Bottom checks can be done with the front end lifted slightly while the hind feet stay down, or by a second person looking while the rabbit eats. Belly checks can be done in a supported upright hold. Nail trims can be done standing, one foot at a time. Sexing and any genuinely necessary inversion are jobs for a vet, done briefly, with the option of sedation.
When the procedure is the problem
Sometimes trancing is a symptom of the wrong task rather than the wrong technique.
If nails need cutting so often that it is a constant fight, look at the surfaces the rabbit lives on, because rabbits on soft bedding alone wear nothing down.
If the coat mats badly enough to require restraint, that is often a rabbit that cannot groom itself, which points at obesity, dental pain, spinal pain or arthritis. The mat is a symptom.
If the bottom is dirty enough to need daily inversion, the diet or the mobility needs investigating rather than the handling improving.
In each case the handling problem gets easier once the underlying cause is addressed, and the underlying cause is usually more important than the grooming.
The failure modes of the usual advice
"Vets do it, so it must be fine."
Some practitioners used it historically, and the evidence changed. Rabbit-experienced practices now handle rabbits at floor level, in supported holds, with sedation for procedures that genuinely need an immobile animal.
"He loves it, look how relaxed he goes."
The going-limp is the whole misunderstanding. It is the behaviour of an animal that has run out of options.
"It's over in twenty seconds, it can't do any harm."
The spinal injury risk is concentrated in the moment of recovery, which happens whether the procedure took twenty seconds or two minutes.
"Scruff them like a cat and they go still."
Rabbits are not kittens and adult cats should not be scruffed either. Scruffing a rabbit without full hind end support leaves the entire body weight hanging from the skin of the neck with the spine unsupported, which is both painful and dangerous.
"Wrap it tight and it will calm down."
Towelling done properly is useful. Wrapping a panicking rabbit tightly and holding on is just restraint with fabric.
"Get it done fast before it notices."
Speed increases struggling, which increases the force involved. Short and calm beats fast and forceful every time.
"If it stops moving, it has accepted it."
In this species, stopping moving is what fear looks like at its most extreme.
After a bad handling episode

Rebuilding is done on the floor, at the rabbit's pace, with food and with no reaching. A rabbit that comes back to investigate is a rabbit recovering its confidence.
Two things need watching, and only one of them is behavioural.
The gut.
Fear is a genuine trigger for gut slowdown in rabbits. For the next day or two after a frightening episode, count droppings and check that the rabbit is eating hay. Fewer or smaller droppings, or a refusal of hay, needs a phone call rather than a wait.
The back end.
If a rabbit has kicked hard against restraint, watch how it moves. Dragging hind legs, an inability to stand, no tail movement, or urine and faeces passed where the rabbit is sitting are emergency findings. Do not splint anything, do not lift the rabbit by the body alone, and transport it flat on a firm supported surface such as a board or a stiff box lid inside the carrier.
Then rebuild.
Spend a week doing nothing but sitting on the floor in the rabbit's space, not reaching, not looking directly at it, scattering food nearby. Let it approach you. Then rebuild the handling in the stages described above, starting well below the point where it went wrong. Rabbits recover from this, but only if nothing repeats it in the meantime.
What never to do
Do not put a rabbit on its back to make it easier to work on.
Do not tighten your grip on a struggling rabbit. Lower it and release.
Do not lift a rabbit by the ears, by the scruff alone, or with the hind end unsupported.
Do not hold a rabbit while standing up if you can do the same job sitting on the floor.
Do not use trancing to check a rabbit you think might be unwell. An immobile rabbit shows no pain, which is the opposite of what an examination needs.
Do not let anyone else trance your rabbit, including at shows, in shops or in a grooming setting, without you agreeing to it.
Do not assume a rabbit that has been handled this way for years is fine with it. Assess it against the table above, and expect to find a rabbit that has learned to switch off rather than one that has learned to cope.
My rabbit goes completely floppy and its eyes close. Surely that is relaxation?

When to get help
Go to a rabbit-experienced vet immediately for:
- Dragging or non-functional hind legs after any handling incident
- A rabbit that cannot stand, or that cries out when moved
- Urine or faeces passed where the rabbit is sitting, with no attempt to move
- Collapse, cold ears, or rapid shallow breathing following a stressful episode
Contact a vet within a day for:
- A rabbit that stops eating hay or produces fewer droppings after a frightening handling session
- A rabbit that has suddenly become intolerant of being touched, particularly around the back or the hind end
- Mats or a soiled bottom that keep recurring, since these usually point at a self-grooming problem with a medical cause
- Nails that overgrow unusually fast, or a rabbit whose feet look sore
When you book, say specifically that you want a practice that handles rabbits at floor level and uses supported holds. Rabbit-competent clinics will recognise the question. It is also worth asking how they restrain rabbits for nail trims and blood samples, because the answer tells you a great deal about the rest of their rabbit medicine.
