Reptiles in the heating season: why indoor air dries out the enclosure
Warming cold outdoor air lowers relative humidity throughout a house, and heated enclosures dry further still. That is why retained shed and dehydration cluster in winter, and why the fix is measured humidity at the substrate rather than sealed ventilation.

Quick answer
When the heating goes on for winter, indoor air gets much drier. Warming cold outside air without adding water to it lowers the relative humidity in every room in the house, and inside a heated, ventilated enclosure it drops further still.
For a reptile, that is not a comfort issue. Humidity drives shedding, water balance and airway health, and a winter humidity crash is one of the most common reasons a previously trouble-free animal starts having retained shed and looking dehydrated in the same month every year.
Winter is when shedding starts going wrong in enclosures that were fine all summer.

Why the enclosure dries out in winter
Cold outdoor air holds very little water. When it enters the house and is warmed to living temperature, the amount of water in it does not change but the amount it could hold rises sharply, so the relative humidity falls.
Inside the enclosure, two further effects stack on top. Basking lamps and ceramic heaters warm the air further, dropping relative humidity again. And warm air rising out of a mesh lid pulls dry room air in behind it, so a heated enclosure exchanges air faster than an unheated one.
The result is that the same setup, unchanged, reads several points lower on the hygrometer in January than it did in July. Nothing broke. The house changed around it.
What dryness does to a reptile
Shedding fails.
Reptiles shed by separating the old skin from the new one along a fluid-filled layer. That separation depends on hydration. In a snake, a good shed comes off in one piece, inside out. In a lizard, it comes off in large flakes over days. Dry conditions produce patchy shed that sticks.
Retained shed strangles extremities.
Skin left on a toe or a tail tip dries, shrinks and constricts. The blood supply is cut off, the tissue dies, and the digit or tail tip is lost. This is the reason retained shed is treated as urgent rather than cosmetic.
Eye caps stay on in snakes.
Snakes have a transparent scale over each eye, the spectacle. A retained spectacle impairs vision and can accumulate layers over several sheds. Removing it is a veterinary job.
Water balance shifts.
Constant evaporative loss from the skin and airway, without a matching increase in drinking, produces gradual dehydration. Sunken eyes, skin that creases and stays creased, thickened pasty urates, reduced appetite and lethargy follow.
Airways dry.
For species from humid habitats, persistently dry air irritates the respiratory tract and predisposes to infection.
Not every reptile is at risk equally. Arid species are built for low humidity and suffer when it is raised. Tropical species suffer when it falls. The point is not to make every enclosure humid, it is to hold the range that suits your species through the season when the house is working against you.

Keep the kit simple. A soft brush to lift loosened shed after a soak, and a clean towel. Combs, coat sprays and grooming products belong to mammals and have no place here.
Measure before you change anything
Buy a digital hygrometer with a probe. The cheap analogue dials supplied with many enclosures are frequently wrong by a wide margin, and acting on a wrong reading is worse than not measuring.
Place the probe where the animal actually spends time, at substrate level, not stuck high on the glass.
Take two readings, one at the warm end and one at the cool end. The gradient matters as much as the number.
Read at the same time each day. Humidity swings after misting, after a water change and overnight, so a single spot reading is misleading.
Look up the range for your specific species, not for "reptiles". An arid-habitat lizard and a rainforest gecko have almost opposite requirements.
Raising humidity safely
Increase the water surface area.
A larger water bowl, or a bowl placed at the warm end, evaporates more. This is the gentlest lever and the first one to try.
Add a humid hide.
A closed box with a damp substrate such as sphagnum moss or paper towel, with an entry hole, placed at the warm end. The animal chooses when to use it, which is the great advantage of this approach: you are offering a microclimate rather than forcing one.
Deepen and dampen the substrate.
Moisture held in a deeper substrate layer releases slowly. Keep the surface dry and the lower layer damp for species that burrow.
Partially cover the mesh.
Covering a portion of the lid slows air exchange. Never cover all of it, and never cover mesh directly above a heat lamp.
Mist at the right time.
Misting produces a short spike, not a sustained level. It is useful for species that drink droplets, and it is not a humidity strategy on its own.
Consider a room humidifier.
If the whole house is dry, raising room humidity fixes several enclosures at once and helps the people too. Keep it away from electrical fittings and clean it regularly.
Soaks and baths.
A shallow, supervised soak in lukewarm water helps a shedding animal. The water should not be deep enough for the animal to be forced to swim, the temperature must be checked, and the animal must never be left unattended. Species differ in tolerance, and some arid species should not be soaked routinely.

Drowning happens in bath tubs and sinks with a few centimetres of water when an animal is weak, cold or unable to right itself. Burns happen fast in water that felt fine to a hand. Check the temperature with a thermometer, keep the water shallow, and stay with the animal.

Getting warmth and humidity right together
Heat and humidity are linked, and fixing one badly breaks the other.
Do not use an unregulated heat source. Every heat mat, cable, ceramic emitter and lamp needs a thermostat. Winter is when an unregulated mat, working harder against a colder room, causes burns.
Do not raise the temperature to compensate for a cold room. More heat means drier air and a bigger gradient loss. Insulate the enclosure sides and back instead, and move it away from external walls, draughty windows and doors.
Do not place the enclosure near a radiator. The output is uncontrolled and it dries the immediate area severely.
Check the temperature with a probe at the basking surface and at the cool end, and keep both in the species range regardless of what the room is doing.

Check the eyes, nostrils and ear openings after every shed. Retained skin around these sites is easy to miss and is where dry-air problems show first.
The winter routine
What never to do
Do not peel retained shed off dry. Pulling skin that has not separated tears the new layer underneath and causes bleeding and infection.
Do not attempt to remove a snake's retained eye cap. This is a veterinary procedure and home attempts damage the cornea.
Do not seal an enclosure to hold humidity. Stagnant damp causes scale rot and respiratory infection.
Do not use a household humidifier output aimed directly into an enclosure. Local saturation with no gradient is not what you are after.
Do not use oils, creams or moisturisers on reptile skin. They block the pores of the skin and trap debris, and none of them assist shedding.

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian for retained shed that constricts a toe or the tail tip, for a retained eye cap in a snake, and for shed that has been retained over more than one cycle.
Go the same day for any change in breathing, including clicking, wheezing, bubbling at the nostrils, or open-mouth breathing.
Book an appointment for sunken eyes, persistently thick urates, weight loss or refusal to eat that continues once temperatures and humidity have been corrected.

A complete shed, clear eyes and stable weight through the heating season is the target.
