Reptile greens: calcium, oxalates, goitrogens, and what the pack never says
For a plant-eating reptile the greens are most of the diet, and their mineral content decides whether the animal develops metabolic bone disease, gout or bladder stones. This covers why the calcium to phosphorus ratio is the whole story, why spinach and chard deliver almost none of the calcium they appear to contain, how much protein a herbivore can take before it becomes gout, what reptile food labels do and do not guarantee, and why basking temperature has to be checked before the diet is changed.

Quick answer
A bowl that looks healthy to a human. Whether it is healthy for the animal depends on the calcium to phosphorus ratio and on what else the plants contain.
For a plant-eating reptile, the greens are not the side dish. In an adult bearded dragon, a tortoise, a uromastyx or an iguana, they are most of the diet, and their mineral content decides whether the animal ends up with metabolic bone disease, gout or bladder stones.
Two things separate a good plant food from a bad one, and neither is visible on the packaging. The first is the ratio of calcium to phosphorus. The second is whether the plant contains something that stops the calcium being absorbed at all.
- Aim for plants where calcium exceeds phosphorus. The rule of thumb keepers work to is roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus across the diet.
- Spinach, chard and beet greens look calcium-rich on paper and are not, because oxalic acid locks the calcium up before the animal can absorb it.
- Fruit is a treat for most species and a genuine problem for Mediterranean tortoises.
- Too much protein in a herbivore causes shell pyramiding, kidney damage and gout. It is not a safety margin.
- Before changing the diet, check the basking temperature. A reptile that is too cool cannot digest good food.

Never feed avocado, rhubarb leaves, onion, garlic, chives, or the foliage of tomato, potato and other nightshades to any reptile.
Avocado contains persin, which is toxic to a wide range of animals. Rhubarb leaves carry oxalic acid at levels well beyond the merely inconvenient. Alliums damage red blood cells. Nightshade foliage contains solanine. None of these has a safe portion size worth working out, and all of them turn up in kitchens.

Why the calcium to phosphorus ratio is the whole story
Reptiles need more calcium than phosphorus in the diet, and the shortfall does not show up as a deficiency in the way people expect.
When dietary phosphorus is high relative to calcium, the phosphorus binds calcium in the gut so it cannot be absorbed. Blood calcium starts to fall. The parathyroid glands respond by releasing hormone that pulls calcium out of the only large store available, which is the skeleton. Blood calcium is therefore maintained at a normal level, sometimes for months, while the bones are quietly demineralised to pay for it.
This is nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, and it is what people mean by metabolic bone disease. The point that matters for owners is that the animal looks fine and its blood calcium may test fine while the process is well advanced.
The signs, in the order they usually appear: reduced activity and reluctance to climb, a tremor or twitch in the limbs when the animal moves, difficulty lifting the body clear of the floor, a lower jaw that feels rubbery rather than firm, swelling along the jaw or limbs, bowed legs, and eventually fractures that happen without an accident.
Most plant material humans think of as vegetables is phosphorus-heavy. Grains, seeds, most fruit and all insects are phosphorus-heavy. The calcium has to come from a deliberately chosen group of leaves, and from supplementation.
The anti-nutrients: why a good calcium figure can be a lie

Weigh the portion, and look for the calcium and phosphorus figures rather than the words on the front of the pouch.
Oxalates.
Oxalic acid binds calcium into calcium oxalate, which is insoluble and passes through unabsorbed. A green that is genuinely high in calcium can therefore deliver almost none of it, and can bind calcium from the rest of the meal as well.
The high-oxalate group includes spinach, chard and silverbeet, beet greens, rhubarb, purslane, parsley in quantity, and star fruit. None of these is poisonous in a small occasional amount. All of them are a poor choice as a staple, and spinach in particular is fed constantly because it has a healthy reputation with humans.
There is a second consequence. Calcium oxalate is the material of some urinary stones, and bladder stones are a genuine and painful problem in tortoises and in some lizards.
Goitrogens.
The brassica family, which includes kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, turnip greens and mustard greens, contains compounds that interfere with the thyroid's uptake of iodine. Fed as the entire diet over a long period, this can produce thyroid enlargement.
The honest position is that this is dose dependent and frequently overstated. Kale and turnip greens are genuinely calcium-rich and useful. The rule is rotation, not avoidance: no single brassica should be the whole diet, and the diet should not be entirely brassica.
Phytates and tannins.
Present in grains, seeds, legumes and some leaves, and they reduce mineral availability in a similar way. This is one of several reasons a grain-based pellet is a poor base for a grazing tortoise.
Sugar.
Not an anti-nutrient in the technical sense, but it behaves like one in a hindgut fermenter. Sugar-rich food shifts the gut flora of a grazing tortoise, producing loose stool, poor fibre digestion and overgrowth of organisms that were previously incidental.
Protein: the mistake that looks like generosity
In a plant-eating reptile, protein is not a safety margin. It is a load on the kidneys.
Reptiles excrete nitrogenous waste mainly as uric acid, which is very poorly soluble. Too much dietary protein, or too little water, and uric acid precipitates as crystals in joints, tendon sheaths and internal organs. That is gout, and it is painful, progressive and largely irreversible.
In growing tortoises, excess protein also produces growth that outpaces the mineralisation of the shell. The keratin scutes are pushed up into the raised, lumpy pattern called pyramiding, and the underlying bone is often poor at the same time. Pyramiding does not reverse.
The commonest sources are the ones that feel like kindness: dog food, cat food, high-protein pellets, peas and beans given in quantity, and generic tortoise mixes containing animal protein.
Bearded dragons have the opposite problem, in the opposite direction. Hatchlings and juveniles genuinely need a large insect fraction to grow. Adults do not, and adults kept on the juvenile ratio become obese, develop fat in the liver, and are over-represented in gout cases. The transition from an insect-led juvenile diet to a plant-led adult diet is the single most missed step in bearded dragon keeping.
What the pack actually guarantees
Reptile foods sit outside the complete-and-balanced frameworks written for dog and cat food in most jurisdictions. That has a specific consequence: the words on the front are marketing text rather than regulated claims.
"Complete" and "balanced".
Not defined for reptiles in the way they are for dogs and cats. There is usually no independent standard behind the words.
"For all tortoises" or "for all reptiles".
Impossible. A Mediterranean grazing tortoise and a South American forest tortoise have close to opposite diets, and a product that suits one harms the other. A pack that names no species is telling you it was not formulated for yours.
"High protein" and "with added protein".
For a herbivore, a warning label rather than a selling point.
"With real vegetables" and "natural".
Neither means anything measurable.
What to actually look for.
The calcium and phosphorus figures, and whether the ratio favours calcium. The fibre figure, which for a grazing tortoise should be high. The named species. The ingredient list, where grass, hay and named leaves are what you want at the top, and grain, molasses, soya and animal protein are what you do not.
Correct for moisture before comparing a dried product with a fresh one, or the dried product will always look richer.
Building the plate

A base of leaves with a smaller fraction of colour. The proportions matter more than any single ingredient, and rotation matters more than finding one perfect green.
The base, most days.
Calcium-rich, low-oxalate leaves in rotation: collard or spring greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion, watercress, endive and escarole, chicory, rocket, and for species that take them, prickly pear pads, hibiscus flowers and leaves, and mulberry leaves.
The smaller fraction.
Colour and variety: squash, courgette, bell pepper, green beans, grated carrot, and edible flowers. These add interest and some nutrients but are not the mineral backbone.
Occasional.
Brassicas in rotation. Small amounts of high-oxalate greens if you want the variety. Fruit only for species that genuinely eat it.
Fruit, by species.
Forest tortoises such as red-foot and yellow-foot eat fruit in the wild and should have some. Mediterranean species such as Hermann's, spur-thighed and marginated do not, and fruit causes them loose stool and gut flora problems. Bearded dragons take fruit as an occasional treat only. This is a genuine species split, and generic advice about fruit is worse than useless.
Wild forage, where you can identify it.
For grazing tortoises, wild weeds are better than anything in a supermarket: dandelion, plantain, clover, sow thistle, hawkbit, mallow, chickweed. High fibre, good mineral profile, and the variety they evolved on.
Know your own region's flora, and avoid verges, anywhere sprayed, anywhere dogs are walked, and anything you cannot name with certainty.
Presentation.
Feed from a flat tile or a shallow dish rather than off loose substrate, because substrate swallowed with food is a real cause of impaction. For lizards, a common rule of thumb is to keep pieces smaller than the gap between the animal's eyes. For tortoises, leave leaves largely whole so the animal has to tear at them, which uses the beak and slows the meal.
Check the temperature before you change the food
This is the highest-yield check in reptile nutrition and it is almost always skipped.
Digestion in a reptile is entirely dependent on body temperature, which is set by the environment. Below the species' effective range, gut motility slows, enzyme activity falls, and food sits in the digestive tract instead of being processed. In a cold animal a full meal can ferment, producing gas, discomfort and sometimes regurgitation.
So a reptile that is not thriving on a reasonable diet may not have a diet problem at all. Measure the basking surface temperature and the cool end with a probe or an infrared thermometer, check that a genuine gradient exists, and check that the thermostat probe is where you think it is. Then look at the food.
The same logic applies to ultraviolet light. Calcium is of limited use without vitamin D3, and most of these species make D3 in the skin under ultraviolet B. A bulb that is the wrong type, too far away, behind glass or plastic, or simply old enough to have stopped emitting useful ultraviolet while still looking bright, produces a calcium problem that no amount of green leaves will fix.
What goes wrong, and when
Within weeks.
Loose or foul stool, undigested plant material passing through, reduced appetite, and food left uneaten. Usually temperature, sugar, or a sudden change of food.
Within months.
Reduced activity, reluctance to climb or to lift the body off the floor, tremors or twitching, a lower jaw that yields to gentle pressure, swelling along the jaw or the long bones. This is metabolic bone disease and it needs a vet, not a supplement.
Within years.

The routine that keeps it right

Feed from a tile or a dish, not off loose substrate, and check what is actually eaten rather than what was offered.
What never to do
Do not feed avocado, rhubarb leaves, onion, garlic, chives or nightshade foliage.
Do not give dog food, cat food or high-protein pellets to a herbivorous reptile.
Do not make spinach, chard or beet greens the staple green.
Do not build a diet on iceberg lettuce, which displaces food that carries minerals.
Do not feed fruit to a Mediterranean tortoise.
Do not assume a product is suitable because it is sold for reptiles. Check that it names your species.
Do not increase calcium powder in response to signs of bone disease instead of getting the animal seen.

When to get help
Go the same day for tremors or twitching, a lower jaw that feels soft, an inability to lift the body off the floor, a fracture with no accident behind it, straining with blood in the urates, or swollen painful joints.
Book an appointment for persistent loose stool, for food refusal lasting beyond the species' normal fasting patterns, for a shell that is beginning to pyramid, for weight that is drifting in either direction, and before making a major diet change in an animal that already has signs.
Bring these to the appointment: a photograph of a typical plate, the actual packets and supplement tubs rather than their names, the basking and cool-end temperatures you measured and what you measured them with, the ultraviolet bulb make, type, distance, whether it fires through mesh and the date it was fitted, the weight and length trend, and a photograph of recent droppings and urates.
Expect the vet to want the husbandry before the food. Blood work can show calcium, phosphorus and uric acid, radiographs show bone density and bladder stones, and both are far more informative when read alongside accurate temperature and lighting information.
Ask specifically what the target calcium to phosphorus ratio should be for your species and life stage, and how the supplement schedule should change once the diet is corrected. Those two answers turn a general recommendation into something you can act on this week.
