Reptile Trauma: Shell Fractures, Crush Injuries and the First Hour

A cracked shell is a broken bone, not a broken container, and sealing it with glue or resin traps contamination against exposed bone. This guide covers correct first response to reptile crush and vehicle trauma: bleeding control, warmth, containment, why mammalian gum-colour and capillary refill checks do not apply, spinal injury in lizards and snakes, fly strike, and how to transport the animal.

Quick answer

Correct first aid for a crushed or run-over reptile is a padded, ventilated, warm container and a fast journey. Everything else is done at the clinic.

A reptile that has been hit by a vehicle, trodden on, caught by a mower, or crushed by a door needs a vet, not home repair. The single most important thing to know is that a cracked shell is a broken bone: living, bleeding, painful, and repairable by a vet in a way it is not repairable with glue.

The second most important thing is that reptiles are extraordinarily hard to assess. Metabolism is slow, the heartbeat can be very difficult to find, and an animal that appears dead can be alive and treatable. Do not make that judgement yourself.

  • Do not seal a shell fracture with epoxy, resin, superglue or fibreglass. Sealing traps contamination inside a wound that has to drain.
  • Do not check gum colour or capillary refill. Those are mammalian perfusion checks and they are not reliable in reptiles.
  • Control obvious bleeding with light direct pressure on clean gauze, then stop.
  • Keep the animal within its normal temperature range on the journey. A cold reptile cannot fight infection or heal.
  • Cover open wounds and get the animal indoors. Flies lay eggs in reptile wounds within hours.

Shell fractures are contaminated wounds. Sealing the surface locks dirt, road grit and bacteria against exposed bone and the body cavity, and infection then develops slowly and invisibly underneath for months. Modern veterinary repair cleans the wound, stabilises the fragments with hardware that can be removed, and deliberately leaves the injury able to drain. Many turtles survive severe shell fractures when treated this way, and far fewer survive after a home seal.

Why mammal trauma first aid misleads you here

You cannot read perfusion from the mouth.

Assessing gum colour and pressing to time capillary refill are core mammal checks. In reptiles they are unreliable: the oral tissues are pigmented differently between species, circulation responds differently, and a reptile can be in serious trouble with an unremarkable mouth. Opening the mouth also causes stress and risks injuring the animal. Judge instead by posture, responsiveness, muscle tone, breathing pattern and obvious injury.

A slow heart and slow breathing are normal.

Reptiles breathe intermittently and their heart rates are low and temperature dependent. Absence of obvious breathing over a short observation does not mean the animal has died, and reptiles have been declared dead by owners and found to be alive at the clinic. This has practical consequences: never dispose of, freeze or bury a reptile that has been injured without a veterinary assessment.

Shock does not look the same.

The pale, panting, tachycardic picture of mammalian shock is not what you will see. A reptile in trouble is usually flaccid, unresponsive, cool to handle and unwilling to move.

Temperature is treatment.

A reptile below its preferred range cannot run an immune response, cannot metabolise medication predictably and cannot heal. Keeping an injured reptile warm on the journey is not comfort care, it is part of the treatment. Equally, do not overheat it.

Healing runs on a different clock.

A shell fracture is not a six-week injury. Repairs commonly take many months, with the animal under veterinary care throughout. Owners who expect a quick fix are the ones most tempted by glue.

What the shell actually is.

The carapace above and the plastron below are formed from bone fused with the ribs and vertebrae, covered by keratin scutes. It is skeleton, not armour bolted on. It carries blood vessels and nerves, which is why a crack bleeds and why it hurts.

Why it is survivable.

Shell fractures, including severe ones, are among the more rewarding reptile injuries to treat. Chelonians tolerate the repair well and the bone knits, given clean wound management, stabilisation, antibiotic cover and pain relief, and enough time.

Why it is time critical.

The injury is contaminated from the moment it happens. Road grit, soil, pond water and fly eggs all enter. The window in which a vet can clean a wound thoroughly before infection is established is measured in hours, not days.

What you do.

Contain the animal on a padded, flat surface in a ventilated box. Cover exposed tissue loosely with clean gauze dampened with sterile saline or clean water so it does not dry out. Do not push protruding tissue back in. Do not rinse the wound with anything you would not put in your own eye. Keep the animal warm and go.

What the vet will consider.

Radiographs to see the extent of fracture and whether the spine or limbs are involved. Debridement and lavage. Stabilisation, which may use screws and wire bridges, plates, or a vacuum-assisted dressing, depending on the fracture. Antibiotics and analgesia. Then months of wound management and, for aquatic species, a carefully controlled return to water.

Aquatic turtles specifically.

Keep an injured aquatic turtle out of the water until a vet directs otherwise. Water carries bacteria straight into an open shell wound, and a turtle weakened by injury can drown in a depth it would normally manage. Hydration is managed by soaks or fluids on veterinary instruction, not by putting the animal back in the tank.

Lizards and snakes: crush and spinal injury

Spinal injury.

Being trodden on, run over or caught under a closing door most often damages the spine. In a lizard this shows as dragging hind limbs, loss of tail movement and loss of bladder or bowel control. In a snake it shows as a persistent kink and an inability to move the body behind that point.

Transport these animals flat, fully supported along their whole length, in a container just large enough to prevent them shifting around. Do not lift a snake with a suspected spinal injury by the middle of the body: support it end to end.

Internal injury without external signs.

Reptile skin and scales can look intact over a serious internal injury. A lizard that was stepped on and now sits hunched, or a snake that will not move normally, needs imaging regardless of how the outside looks.

Limb fractures.

Splint nothing. Reptile limbs are short, the skin is delicate, and a home splint applied over scales causes pressure injury quickly. Confinement in a small padded container does the job until the vet sees the animal.

Tail autotomy in lizards.

Many lizards shed the tail deliberately when grabbed or injured. The stump usually bleeds briefly and then stops, and the tail regrows imperfectly. This is not an emergency on its own, though it needs to be kept clean and dry and the underlying incident still needs assessment. Never pull on a lizard's tail, and never pick a lizard up by it.

Burns from mowers and machinery.

Strimmer and mower injuries often combine laceration, crush and contamination. Treat them with the same urgency as a shell fracture.

Fly strike: the complication people miss

A wound on a reptile outdoors, or in a warm room with open windows, attracts flies. Eggs are laid in and around damaged tissue and hatch quickly in warm conditions, and the larvae then invade living tissue.

This is a genuine emergency in its own right and it can develop within hours of the original injury.

Move any injured reptile indoors immediately. Cover open wounds with clean gauze. Look carefully in and around the wound, in shell fracture lines, around the tail base and inside the limb pockets of a chelonian. If you see eggs, which look like small clusters of pale grains, or any larvae, say so when you phone the practice, because it changes how urgently they need to see the animal.

Do not attempt to pick larvae out yourself. They extend deeper than they appear and removal is a veterinary procedure.

Do not seal, glue, tape or resin a shell fracture.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide, surgical spirit, iodine at full strength, or any household antiseptic on the wound.

Do not apply creams, ointments or honey preparations before a vet has cleaned the wound. Anything greasy has to be removed before the wound can be assessed.

Do not give human painkillers. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin are not safe to improvise with in reptiles, and effective reptile analgesia is prescribed by species and weight.

Do not check gum colour or capillary refill, and do not force the mouth open.

Do not soak or immerse an injured reptile, and do not return an injured aquatic turtle to its tank.

Do not assume a reptile that shows no sign of life has died. Keep it warm, contain it, and let a vet decide.

Do not delay because the animal seems fine. Internal injuries, hairline shell fractures and slowly declaring infection are the reason this is a same-day appointment even for an animal that walked away.

Recovery from shell repair is measured in months of managed wound care, not weeks. The calm, warm, clean setup is the largest part of it.

My tortoise's shell is only slightly cracked and it is behaving normally. Can I watch it?
No. A crack you can see is an opening into bone and, potentially, into the body cavity, and it is contaminated from the moment it happened. Tortoises are also very good at behaving normally while seriously injured. Early cleaning is what makes the difference between a repair and a long infection.
I read that people use fibreglass and resin to patch shells. Why not?
That approach was used historically and it is now understood to cause harm, because it seals contamination against exposed bone where infection then progresses out of sight. Current veterinary practice cleans and stabilises the fracture while keeping it able to drain, and monitors it over months.
How do I know if my reptile is in pain if it does not vocalise?
Reptiles do feel pain and they show it through behaviour rather than sound: reluctance to move, hiding, refusing food, holding an abnormal posture, and reacting when a specific area is approached. Absence of noise is not absence of pain, which is why prescribed analgesia is a standard part of trauma treatment.
Should I warm an injured reptile up as much as possible to help it heal?
Warm it to its normal preferred range, not above it. Correct temperature supports immune function and healing. Overheating an injured animal adds a second emergency and can cause burns on an animal that is too weak to move away from the heat source.

When to get help

Every reptile involved in a vehicle impact, crush injury, machinery accident or fall needs a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day, whether or not you can see damage.

Go immediately for any shell fracture, visible tissue through a wound, bleeding that will not stop, dragging limbs, a kinked and immobile snake, fly eggs or larvae in a wound, or an animal that appears lifeless.

If the animal is a wild turtle or tortoise found on a road, contain it in a ventilated box, record exactly where you found it, and contact a wildlife veterinarian or a licensed rescue. Location matters because a rehabilitated animal should be returned to where it came from, and moving it elsewhere reduces its chance of survival. Check local rules before handling wildlife, as protected species are involved in many regions.

Bring the species and approximate weight, the time and mechanism of injury, the enclosure temperature range you normally provide, the diet, photographs from the scene, and anything you applied to the wound. Say clearly if you used any adhesive, antiseptic or ointment, because the vet will need to remove it before the injury can be assessed properly.
