Why elimination diets do not transfer to parrots
In dogs and cats, an elimination trial works because the disease is well described: an immune response to a familiar dietary protein such as beef or chicken, producing itch and gut signs, which resolve on a novel or hydrolysed protein and return on rechallenge.
Parrots do not have that documented syndrome. They also do not eat a small set of animal proteins, so the whole framework has nothing to remove.
The practical harm is worse than the theory. Elimination trials involve narrowing a diet, and narrowing a parrot's diet is a reliable way to create the nutritional deficiency that actually causes disease. Restricting an already limited diet in a bird with feather or skin problems tends to make the bird worse.
If a parrot has skin or feather problems, the useful list is completely different: feather destructive behaviour, giardia and other parasites, bacterial or fungal folliculitis, hormonal drive, air quality, low humidity, boredom, pain, and viral disease. Diet is on that list, but as deficiency rather than as allergy.
Hypovitaminosis A, the deficiency that hides in plain sight
Seeds contain very little vitamin A precursor. A parrot eating mostly sunflower seed, millet and peanuts is slowly running down its reserves, and the effects appear in tissues that need vitamin A to maintain their surfaces.
In the mouth and throat.
The choanal papillae, the small pointed projections in the roof of the mouth, blunt and flatten. White or yellow plaques appear around the tongue base and the corners of the mouth. Owners often mistake these for food debris.
In the sinuses and airway.
Blocked nostrils, a swelling beside the eye, sneezing, and repeated respiratory infections that clear on antibiotics and come straight back.
In the feet.
Thickened, flaking skin on the soles, which contributes to pressure sores and bumblefoot.
In the feathers.
Dull colour, poor structure, and slow or abnormal regrowth after moult.
In the kidneys.
Vitamin A deficiency contributes to the changes underlying gout in some birds.
The correction is a diet with genuine carotenoid sources: dark leafy greens, sweet potato, carrot, red pepper, squash, and a formulated pellet designed for parrots. It is not a bottle of vitamin drops in the drinking water, which delivers an unknown dose and spoils quickly.

Weighing food, and weighing the bird, is how you find out what is actually being eaten rather than what is being scattered.
Fatty liver disease
Hepatic lipidosis is the other major diet-driven disease of pet parrots. It is common in Amazons, budgerigars, cockatiels and lovebirds, and it develops over months.
The mechanism is simple. Seeds and nuts are calorie-dense, a caged bird flies very little, and the surplus is stored in the liver. As liver function declines, the bird handles fat and protein badly, and the cycle accelerates.
The outward signs are easy to miss until late: overgrown, soft or flaking beak and nails, weight gain then unexplained weight loss, greenish discolouration in the urate portion of droppings, reduced stamina, and in advanced cases a swollen abdomen and laboured breathing.
Bruising easily and bleeding for longer than expected after a broken blood feather can also point at liver disease, because clotting factors are made there.
This is a veterinary diagnosis based on examination, bloodwork and imaging. It is treatable when caught, and the treatment is a supervised diet change plus more flight and foraging, not a home restriction plan.
Converting a seed-eating parrot to a better diet
Conversion is the useful intervention, and it is the opposite of an elimination trial. You are widening the diet, not narrowing it.
Weigh the bird daily on a gram scale before you start and throughout. A falling weight is the signal to stop and reassess with your vet.
Offer the new food at the time of day the bird is hungriest, usually first thing in the morning, and leave the familiar food available later in the day.
Present vegetables in several forms. Many parrots reject a chopped salad and accept the same vegetable whole, clipped to the bars, warm, or shredded into something they already eat.
Eat in front of the bird. Parrots are social feeders and take strong cues from what the flock is eating.
Expect it to take weeks to months in an adult bird that has eaten seed all its life. Slow success is the normal outcome.

Texture and presentation change acceptance more than flavour does. The same vegetable refused chopped is often taken whole.
Foods that are genuinely dangerous
Avocado, in every part of the fruit and plant.
Chocolate and cocoa, through theobromine and caffeine.
Caffeine in coffee, tea and energy drinks.
Alcohol in any amount.
Onion and garlic, raw, cooked, powdered or in a sauce, through damage to red blood cells.
Salt and heavily salted human snacks, which small birds cannot excrete in the quantities present in processed food.
Fruit stones and apple pips, which contain cyanogenic compounds.
Anything mouldy. Nuts and corn stored damp can carry aflatoxins, and mouldy food is also the main route to aspergillosis, a fungal lung disease that is very difficult to treat.
Non-stick cookware is not a food, but it belongs on the same shelf of the brain: overheated PTFE coatings release fumes that kill birds in minutes.
What never to do
Do not put vitamin supplements in drinking water. The dose is unknown, the water spoils faster, and some birds drink less because of the taste.
Do not restrict a parrot's diet to test for allergy. There is no established protocol and the risk of creating a deficiency is real.
Do not assume feather plucking is dietary. It has a long medical differential list that needs working through first.
Do not feed from your own mouth or share chewed food. Human oral bacteria are not harmless to birds.
Do not change more than one thing at a time, and never remove a familiar food before the new one is being eaten reliably.

Book a routine appointment for any parrot on a seed-based diet, for white plaques in the mouth, for repeated sinus infections, and for a beak or nails that are overgrowing or flaking.

A stable weight, clean nostrils, smooth feathers and a hard even beak are what a good diet looks like from the outside.
Bring the actual diet, including the bag the seed or pellet came in, your weight record, and a note of what the bird refuses. Diet-related disease in parrots is usually diagnosed from that history plus bloodwork rather than from a food trial.
