Leaving a reptile while you are away: how long they can safely go without food, and what actually fails
For most healthy adult reptiles the feeding question answers itself: they can miss meals. Heat, water and humidity cannot. Here is fasting tolerance by species and life stage, the equipment failures that kill during an absence, and the sitter pack that prevents them.

Quick answer
The meal is almost never the problem. For most healthy adult reptiles, a missed feed matters less than a missed thermostat check.
Owners planning a trip worry about who will feed the reptile. That is the wrong worry for most species.
A reptile is an ectotherm. It does not burn energy keeping itself warm, so its daily energy cost is a small fraction of a similar-sized mammal's, and a healthy, well-conditioned adult can miss meals without harm. Heat, water and humidity have no such reserve. A thermostat that fails on a Tuesday can kill by Wednesday.
So the plan is not a feeding schedule. It is a failure plan.
- Healthy adult snakes and most adult lizards can safely skip feeds across a short trip. Skip the meal before you leave rather than feeding on the way out of the door.
- Hatchlings, juveniles, gravid females, underweight animals and anything recovering from illness cannot be left. They need a person, daily.
- Herbivores, chameleons and aquatic species need daily attention regardless of trip length, because fresh food and water quality do not keep.
- Never leave live prey in an enclosure. Crickets and rodents chew a resting reptile.
- Fit a second, independent high-temperature cut-off before you go anywhere. Runaway heat is the fastest killer on this list.

Never leave live prey with an unattended reptile.
Crickets and locusts chew the skin, eyes and vent of a sleeping or shedding lizard. A rodent left with a snake that is not hungry will bite through the coils and can kill it. A snake that has been fed a live rodent while you are away is the classic reason a keeper comes home to a badly injured animal.

Why a reptile can miss meals and cannot miss heat
A mammal spends most of its food on staying warm. A reptile spends none of it. That single difference is why the two species groups need completely different absence plans.
Warmth for a reptile comes from the enclosure, and everything downstream depends on it. Digestion only proceeds within a species-appropriate temperature band. Below it, food sits undigested in the gut and rots, which is why a chilled snake regurgitates. Immune function drops, which is why respiratory infections follow cold spells. Gut motility slows, which is how impactions start.
Above the band, the picture is worse and faster. A reptile in an enclosure with a stuck-on heat source cannot escape it. Glass and wooden vivaria hold heat, and the animal has nowhere cooler to go. Thermal burns and fatal hyperthermia happen within hours, not days.
Food, by comparison, has enormous slack. Many snakes naturally fast for long stretches: through brumation, through the breeding season, before a shed, and, in ball pythons especially, through much of the winter for no discoverable reason at all. Fat-tailed and leopard geckos carry a visible energy reserve in the tail. A healthy adult with good body condition is not in any danger from a missed feed.
That slack is a safety margin. It is not permission to leave an animal alone with no oversight, because the things with no slack are still running.
What actually fails while you are away
The thermostat.
Two failure modes, and they are not equally dangerous. Fails off means a cold animal, which is a problem measured in days. Fails on means a runaway heat source, which is a problem measured in hours.
The fix is not a better thermostat, it is a second one. Fit an independent high-temperature cut-off wired in series, set a little above your normal target, so that when the primary sticks the second one drops the power. This is the single highest-value thing on this page.
The bulb.
Basking bulbs and UVB tubes fail without warning. In a setup where the basking lamp is also the heat source, a blown bulb is a heating failure. Replace anything approaching the end of its service life before you go, not after you get back, and leave labelled spares where the sitter will find them.
The power supply.
Grid reliability varies enormously by country and by season. In a cold snap, a tropical species in an unheated house has hours, not days. Brief whoever is checking on what to do: insulate the vivarium with blankets, close the room, use covered hot water bottles or hand warmers well away from direct skin contact, and move the enclosure to the warmest room in the house.
The water bowl.
Tipped, evaporated, or fouled. Dehydration in reptiles is quiet and cumulative, and in species prone to gout it does lasting kidney damage. Use a heavy, wide, low bowl that cannot be flipped, and add a second one in a different part of the enclosure so a single accident is not total.
Humidity.
Automated misting systems run their reservoirs dry, block, or stick on. Dry means retained shed, constricted toes and dehydration. Stuck on means soaked substrate, which produces scale rot and respiratory infection. Whichever system you use, someone has to look at it.
Escape.
Absences are when reptiles are lost, because nobody notices for days. Check every catch, every sliding glass lock, every cable gap and every lid clip before you go. A loose animal in a house with the heating off is a survival problem, not just an inconvenience.
Rotting food.
Salad for a tortoise, fruit puree for a crested gecko, uneaten insects. All of it moulds in a warm, humid box, and gnats and mites follow. Leaving extra food out is not a substitute for a visitor.
A well-meaning sitter.
Overfeeding, feeding the wrong item, handling an animal that should be left alone, or lifting a snake that has just eaten and causing a regurgitation. Almost all of this comes from vague instructions rather than carelessness.

Pre-portioning removes the judgement call. A sitter who is handed exact, measured portions cannot accidentally double a meal or halve it.
Fasting tolerance, by species and life stage
Read this as a hierarchy of risk rather than a set of durations, because condition matters more than species.
Adult snakes.
The most robust group. A well-conditioned adult corn snake, king snake, ball python or boa that normally eats every week or two loses nothing by skipping feeds across a normal holiday. Do not feed immediately before you leave: a snake that is handled, chilled or disturbed while digesting regurgitates, and repeated regurgitation is genuinely dangerous.
Adult terrestrial lizards with fat reserves.
Leopard geckos, fat-tailed geckos and blue-tongue skinks store energy and eat on an interval rather than daily. Body condition tells you the answer: a full, rounded tail on a gecko means reserves. A thin one means do not leave it.
Adult bearded dragons and other omnivores.
Adults eat mostly plant matter and can go without insects easily, but they still want fresh greens and they still need daily water and correct basking. Alternate-day visits work for a short trip; daily is better.
Herbivorous tortoises and lizards.
Not suitable for a fasting plan at any length. Their gut is a continuous fermentation system that expects daily fibre, and their food is perishable. They need someone every day.
Chameleons.
Daily. They drink from moving water, they need live prey, and they dehydrate quickly. Automated misting reduces the work but does not remove the need for a person to confirm it ran.
Aquatic turtles.
They can miss meals, but water quality cannot miss maintenance. Uneaten food and increased waste push ammonia up quickly in a warm tank. Check filtration, and be conservative with what is left in the water.
Hatchlings and juveniles of everything.
No. They are growing, they have almost no reserve, and they dehydrate fast. If you cannot arrange competent daily care, do not travel with a hatchling in the house.
Gravid females, underweight animals, and anything convalescing.
No. These animals need daily observation by someone who knows what wrong looks like, and a vet who is expecting a possible call.
Building the sitter pack
Write it down. Verbal instructions decay within a day and a sitter under pressure defaults to what they know about cats.
Put a laminated sheet on the enclosure itself, not in an email.
On the sheet.
The species, the animal's name, its sex and age, and its current weight.
Target temperatures at the basking site, at the cool end and overnight, plus exactly where to read them and what the display should say.
Target humidity and how to raise it, in one sentence.
What normal looks like for this individual: where it usually sits, when it is active, what it does when it is well.
The three signs that mean ring me, chosen for this species. For most that is gaping and laboured breathing, a limp or unresponsive animal, and any burn or wound.
Feeding: the exact item, the exact quantity, the exact day. Then a line that says if in doubt, do not feed. Skipping a meal is safe; guessing is not.
Water: change daily, in these bowls, with this water.
What not to do: do not handle, do not leave live insects in, do not move the enclosure, do not add anything.
The contacts block.
Your number and a backup number. The reptile vet's name, address, daytime number and out-of-hours number. A named second person who can authorise treatment if you cannot be reached, and a spending limit you have agreed in writing. Vets cannot treat on a stranger's say-so without this and the delay is exactly when it matters.
The kit.
Spare bulbs, labelled. A spare thermostat if you have one. A digital thermometer with a probe, not a dial gauge stuck to the glass. Recent photographs of the animal from the side and from above, so the sitter can compare rather than guess.

If boarding is the plan, food goes with the animal. Changing diet and enclosure in the same week is how a trip turns into a hunger strike.
Boarding, or leaving them at home
Leaving the animal in its own enclosure is almost always the lower-risk option, because you keep control of every husbandry variable. The risk you accept is that nobody is watching the equipment continuously.
Boarding swaps that around. Someone competent is watching, but the animal moves into an unfamiliar enclosure with different temperatures, different light and different smells, and travel plus a new environment is the classic trigger for a long food refusal.
For a short trip, home is usually right. For a long absence, or for a fragile animal, a keeper with real reptile experience is worth the disruption.
If you do board, send the animal's own hide, its own substrate if practical, and its own food. Write the husbandry sheet as if the person has never seen your species, even if they have.

Sending the familiar things with the animal, including its own hide, substrate and food, reduces the refusal that usually follows a move.
What never to do
Do not feed a snake immediately before you leave, and do not let anyone handle it after a meal.
Do not leave live prey in the enclosure, in any species, for any length of time.
Do not leave a pile of extra food as insurance. It rots, and it does not substitute for a visit.
Do not switch off the UVB or drop the temperature to save power while you are away. A reptile in a cold, dark box is not resting, it is shutting down.
Do not rely on a single thermostat, a single bulb, or a single water bowl.
Do not leave a hatchling, a gravid female or a sick animal on a fasting plan.
Do not assume your sitter knows that a reptile which has not moved all day may be perfectly normal, or may be dying. Tell them which is which for your animal.
What the vet will ask if something goes wrong
Actual measured temperatures at the basking site and the cool end, taken with a probe, not the number the thermostat display claims.
When the animal last ate, and when it last passed faeces or urates.
Weight now against weight before you left.
What changed: a new bulb, a power cut, a substrate change, a new food item, a move.
Whether anything was left in the enclosure with it, particularly live insects or rodents.
Photographs from the same angles as your pre-trip pictures.
Give the sitter access to all of this, and permission to hand it over. A vet with a full husbandry history diagnoses most reptile problems from the sheet before touching the animal.

When to get help
Tell your sitter to ring the vet, not you first, for laboured or open-mouth breathing, a burn, an animal that is limp or unresponsive, tissue protruding from the vent, or an enclosure found far outside its temperature range with the animal affected.
Tell them to ring you for anything else that looks different: refusing food, a change in position or activity, a shed that has not come away, faeces that look wrong, or a piece of equipment behaving oddly.
On your return, do a proper check rather than assuming. Weigh the animal against your pre-trip number, look at the whole body for burns, retained shed and wounds, look at the vent, and confirm it has passed faeces since you left. A reptile that has been quietly cold for a week looks fine and is not.
Book a reptile vet if the weight has dropped noticeably, if there is any breathing noise or effort, or if the animal has not eaten within a reasonable interval for its species after you are home and its temperatures are confirmed correct.
