Guinea pig food and hay storage: vitamin C loss, mould and rancidity
Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C, and vitamin C is the least stable nutrient in the bag. Heat, light, air and time strip it out invisibly, which is why a pig on a fortified pellet can still show deficiency. Quick answer
The right food can become the wrong food while it sits in the cupboard. Storage decides how much of what is on the label actually reaches the animal.
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, and vitamin C is one of the least stable nutrients in any bag of food. It degrades with time, warmth, light, air and moisture, and none of that is visible or smellable.
This is why a guinea pig fed a good vitamin C fortified pellet every day can still develop scurvy. The pellet was correct when it left the factory. By the time it reached the bowl, from an eight month old bag kept in a warm kitchen in a clear jar, it was not.
- Buy pellet bag sizes you will finish within a few months, not the biggest bag on the shelf.
- Store pellets sealed, cool, dark and dry. Light and heat are what destroy the vitamin C.
- Store hay the opposite way: breathable, off the floor, never in a sealed plastic box, because trapped moisture grows mould.
- Get vitamin C from fresh vegetables every day. Pellets are a supporting source, not a reliable one.
- Smell the pellets and the hay before each refill. Rancid fat and mould both have a smell; lost vitamin C does not.

Fungal spores from damp or badly stored hay are inhaled directly into small airways by an animal whose face is buried in the material for most of its waking life. The result ranges from sneezing and eye discharge to pneumonia. Why vitamin C is the nutrient that gets lost
Most mammals manufacture vitamin C in the liver from glucose. Guinea pigs, like humans and a handful of other species, lost that ability, so the entire daily requirement has to come in through the mouth.
Ascorbic acid is a small, reactive molecule. It gives up electrons easily, which is exactly what makes it useful as an antioxidant in the body and exactly what makes it fragile in a bag. Oxygen, warmth, light, humidity and trace metals all accelerate the reaction that converts it into forms the guinea pig cannot use.
Manufacturers respond by using stabilised or coated forms of vitamin C, and by adding a generous overage at production so that the label figure is still met some months later. That works, within limits, but it means two things owners rarely think about.
The clock started at manufacture, not at purchase. A bag that sat in a warehouse and then on a shelf has already spent part of its budget.
Once the bag is opened, air enters at every reseal, and the rate of loss climbs. Storing that opened bag somewhere warm, or in a clear container on a sunlit worktop, accelerates it further.
The consequence is a silent failure. There is no smell, no colour change and no texture change to tell you the vitamin C has gone. The food looks exactly the same, and the guinea pig keeps eating it.
What that looks like in the animal.
Early vitamin C insufficiency is vague: a rough, staring coat, slower healing of small wounds, reduced appetite, and a guinea pig that moves less and is reluctant to be picked up.
Established scurvy is unmistakable and painful: swollen, painful joints, particularly the hocks and wrists, a hunched posture, bleeding from the gums, teeth that loosen, and a guinea pig that squeals when touched or lifted. It looks like arthritis or injury and is regularly mistaken for both.
Because deficiency also impairs the immune response, a guinea pig that keeps getting minor infections or does not recover properly from one is worth assessing for vitamin C status alongside everything else.
The reliable route is fresh food every day, not the pellet. Pellets are a useful floor, not a guarantee.
Storing pellets: sealed, cool and dark

Keep the food in its own bag and put the bag in the tub. The bag is a light and grease barrier that a plain container is not.
Buy for how fast you use it.
The economics of a large bag stop working the moment the last third is nutritionally hollow. For one or two guinea pigs eating a measured daily portion, a smaller bag replaced more often delivers more vitamin C per unit of money than a sack that lasts most of a year.
Keep the original bag.
Decanting straight into a tub throws away the barrier layer the manufacturer chose, and with it the printed batch and date information you will want if something goes wrong. Roll the bag down, clip it, and put the whole thing inside an airtight container.
Cool, dark, dry, stable.
A cupboard in the coolest room is ideal. The places that ruin food are the ones people find convenient: a garage or shed that swings between temperatures, a shelf above a radiator or boiler, a sunny worktop, a conservatory, or the top of a fridge where the motor keeps the surface warm.
In hot or humid climates this is the binding constraint. Where the ambient temperature is high year round, buy small, buy often, and keep the container in the coolest interior room rather than in any outbuilding.
Never store food in the cage room if that room is warm and damp.
The same conditions that suit an animal poorly also degrade its food quickly.
Scoop with something dry.
A wet or greasy scoop reintroduces moisture into the bag. Moisture is what mould and storage mites need to get started.
Rancidity, and the guinea pig that stops eating
Pellets contain fat, and fat oxidises. The result is rancidity, and unlike vitamin C loss it does have a smell: like old nuts, crayons, putty or oil paint.
Two things follow. Rancid fat destroys vitamin E in the food alongside it, so the diet loses a second nutrient. And rancid food tastes bad, so the guinea pig eats less of it.
This matters because appetite loss in a guinea pig is never a small problem. A guinea pig that eats less keeps its gut moving less, and gut stasis in this species escalates quickly.
The differential to work through when a guinea pig refuses its usual pellets.

The first check costs nothing and takes five seconds: open the bag and smell it.
Storing hay: the opposite rules

Good hay is green to pale gold, springy, sweet-smelling and mostly free of dust. This is what you are comparing every new bale against.
Hay is the bulk of the diet and the main thing keeping the teeth worn and the gut moving, so its condition matters more than the pellet's does.
Hay needs to breathe. Sealing hay in an airtight plastic tub traps the small amount of moisture it always carries and turns the container into an incubator. Use a cardboard box, a hessian or cotton sack, a fabric hay bag, or a wire rack, somewhere with air movement.
Keep it off the floor and off bare concrete. Concrete wicks moisture upward, and a bale sitting directly on a garage floor draws damp into its base for weeks before anyone notices.
Keep it out of direct sun and away from any source of steam or damp, including a utility room with a tumble dryer.

Warmth inside a stored bale is a serious warning. It means microbial activity is happening in there.
Storage mites.
Damp, warm stored feed and hay support mite populations that are invisible to the eye. They cause itching and skin irritation in the animals exposed to them, and their presence is also a signal that the storage conditions are wrong. If a guinea pig starts scratching and the hay or feed has been stored badly, replace both while you investigate.
Sharp material.
Some hay carries seed awns that can lodge in an eye, an ear or under the skin. Guinea pigs bury their faces in hay, and a hay poke is one of the commonest causes of a suddenly closed, weeping eye. Shake out and eyeball a handful before it goes in the rack.
In humid climates, hay is the hard problem.
Where humidity is persistently high, hay bought in bulk will spoil before it is used. Buying compressed, sealed, small packs and opening them one at a time works better than one large bale, even though the unit cost is higher.
Fresh vegetables and water
Fresh greens are the reliable daily vitamin C source, and they degrade too, just faster.
Vitamin C content falls as vegetables wilt, so a bag of leaves that has been in the fridge for a week is worth far less than it looks. Buy fresh, store cold, and use quickly.
Wash and dry vegetables before serving, particularly anything grown outdoors, and serve them at room temperature rather than fridge-cold.
Remove uneaten fresh food within a few hours, and much sooner in warm weather. Wet vegetables left in a cage ferment, attract flies, and in warm conditions contribute directly to flystrike risk in an animal with a soiled back end.
Vitamin C drops added to drinking water are widely sold and are a poor solution. The vitamin degrades in water within hours, especially in light, and it changes the taste enough that some guinea pigs drink less. Reduced water intake in a species prone to bladder stones is a real cost. If supplementation is genuinely needed, ask a vet for a form that is given directly rather than through the water.
Water bottles and bowls need actual cleaning. Biofilm builds up inside the tube and algae grows wherever light reaches the water, and both reduce how much a guinea pig drinks.
The routine that keeps food honest
What never to do
Do not store hay in a sealed plastic box or bin bag. It will mould.
Do not use hay that smells musty as bedding on the grounds that the guinea pig will not eat it. Guinea pigs sleep with their faces in their bedding.
Do not keep pellets in a clear jar on a bright worktop. Light destroys the vitamin C you are paying for.
Do not add vitamin C drops to the drinking water as your main strategy.
Do not decant a new bag on top of the remains of an old one. Finish and clean the container first, or the old, oxidised food and any mites it carries seed the new supply.
Do not feed grass clippings from a mower as a hay substitute. They ferment rapidly and cause serious digestive upset.
Do not buy loose feed from an open bin with a shared scoop if you can avoid it. You have no idea how long it has been exposed.

Fresh greens every day are the dependable vitamin C source. Pellets support that; they do not replace it.

- Squealing when picked up, or refusal to bear weight on a limb
Book within the week for:
- A rough, staring coat with reduced activity and reluctance to be handled
- Swollen joints, particularly around the wrists and hocks
- Bleeding or receding gums, or loose teeth
- Persistent sneezing or eye discharge without breathing difficulty
- Scratching that started after a change of hay or feed
Bring the food bag itself, or a photograph of the label with the batch and date, how long it has been open, where it is stored, a handful of the current hay, the daily vegetable list, and the weight trend. Vitamin C deficiency is diagnosed largely on history and response to correction, so the storage detail is not trivia. It is the diagnostic information.
