Why a bird is so easy to get wrong
The amounts are tiny. A small parrot eats a very small quantity of food each day, so a nutrient that is slightly short in a recipe is not slightly short in the bird. Proportional error scales up in the smallest patients.
Birds select. Offer a mixed bowl and a parrot will eat the sunflower seeds, the nuts and the sweetcorn and leave the rest. The analysis of what you prepared is irrelevant. What matters is the analysis of what was swallowed, and no owner can calculate that.
Deficiency is invisible for a long time. Bone stores buffer calcium until they cannot, and vitamin A stores in the liver run down slowly. The bird looks fine right up to the point where it does not.
The classic pet bird diets got both wrong in the same direction. A seed mix is high in fat and phosphorus and low in calcium, vitamin A and vitamin D3, and an all-vegetable home diet is often low in protein and energy as well.
That is exactly what a formulated diet solves. A pellet is not glamorous, but every bite has the same analysis, so selection cannot unbalance it.
The calcium problem
Calcium is needed for bone, for eggshell, for nerve conduction and for muscle contraction, including the contractions that expel an egg.
Seeds, nuts and grains are naturally high in phosphorus and low in calcium, and a high phosphorus load interferes with calcium absorption. A diet built on those ingredients therefore fails twice over.
Vitamin D3 is the other half. Without it, dietary calcium is poorly absorbed no matter how much is present. Birds can make D3 in the skin under ultraviolet light, but ordinary window glass filters out the relevant wavelengths, so an indoor bird beside a sunny window is not making meaningful amounts.
The consequences are not subtle when they arrive. Growing chicks develop soft, bending bones and fractures. Laying hens produce thin or shell-less eggs and are at risk of egg binding. African greys are the species classically associated with low blood calcium causing tremors, weakness and seizures.
Some good calcium sources are poor calcium sources in practice. Spinach, chard and beet greens contain oxalates that bind calcium and reduce what the bird can use. Kale, dandelion greens, turnip greens, broccoli and bok choy are more useful choices.
Cuttlebone and mineral blocks are worth offering, and worth checking. Many birds ignore them completely, so their presence in the cage proves nothing.
Do not correct a suspected deficiency yourself. Calcium supplements are prescribed against a blood result and a diet history, and dosing blind can cause harm in the other direction.

Weighing the food, and weighing the bird, are the two measurements that turn a feeding routine into information a vet can use.
The vitamin A problem
Vitamin A maintains the lining of the mouth, sinuses, airways, gut and reproductive tract. When it runs short, that lining changes character, thickens and stops working properly.
The presentation is rarely dramatic. It is a bird with recurring sinus infections, a blocked or crusted nostril, swelling around the eye, white plaques or abscesses in the mouth, a changed voice, or an unusual susceptibility to respiratory infection.
Seed diets are the classic cause, and sunflower-heavy mixes are the classic offender.
The fix in food is colour. Dark orange and dark green vegetables supply beta-carotene, which the bird converts to vitamin A as it needs it: sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin, red pepper, dark leafy greens. Cooked and cooled or raw both work depending on what the bird will accept.
Beta-carotene is much safer than preformed vitamin A supplements. Fat-soluble vitamins accumulate, and hypervitaminosis A is a real condition caused by well-meaning owners with a supplement bottle.
Cooking safely for a bird
Never cook for a bird in a non-stick pan.
Overheated non-stick coatings release fumes that kill birds quickly. This applies to pans, bakeware, air fryers, grills and self-cleaning oven cycles. If the kitchen and the bird share air, the cookware has to change.
No salt, butter, oil, sugar or seasoning.
A bird's kidneys deal with far less sodium than a human's, and a seasoned leftover is not a bird food.
Cook beans and pulses properly.
Raw and undercooked dried beans contain compounds that are toxic. Cook them thoroughly, and cool before serving.
Serve warm at most, never hot.
Hot food causes crop burns, which are severe and slow to heal.
Take fresh food out before it spoils.
Wet food in a warm room grows bacteria and mould within hours. Mouldy food is a source of mycotoxins and of aspergillosis spores, and it must never be fed.
Wash produce.
Residues concentrate in a very small animal.
Keep portions honest.
Fresh food that is thrown out uneaten is not nutrition. Watch what actually gets eaten and adjust.

Chop the pieces small enough that a bird cannot pick out only the favourites, and vary the colours rather than the volume.

Caffeine, in coffee, tea and energy drinks.

Salty and heavily processed human foods, including crisps and cured meats.
Onion and garlic in meaningful quantities.
Apple seeds, and the pits or stones of cherries, apricots, peaches and plums.
Sugar-free products containing artificial sweeteners.
Anything mouldy, fermented or past its best, however small the amount.
Dried, uncooked beans.
A structure that works
Formulated pellets as the base of the diet, sized for the species, so the underlying nutrition is complete regardless of what else is picked at.
Fresh vegetables daily, biased toward dark green and dark orange, chopped small so favourites cannot be picked out.
Fruit in modest amounts. It is mostly water and sugar, and it is a treat rather than a food group.
Cooked whole grains and pulses as an occasional addition rather than a staple.
Seeds and nuts kept as training rewards and foraging material rather than as meals, particularly for species prone to obesity and fatty liver disease.
Fresh water daily, in a scrubbed bowl.
A cuttlebone or mineral block available, with an eye on whether it is used.
Weekly weighing, written down. A diet change that looks successful and a weight that is falling is not a successful diet change.
What never to do
Do not replace a formulated diet with home-cooked food because the bird prefers it.
Do not add calcium powder, vitamin drops, cod liver oil or mineral supplements on your own judgement.
Do not add vitamins to drinking water. Birds drink less when the water tastes different, and the mixture grows bacteria in the bowl.
Do not offer grit to a parrot or a parakeet. They hull their seed and do not need it, and it can cause a fatal blockage.
Do not feed anything mouldy, and do not sprout seeds without a scrupulous hygiene routine, because contaminated sprouts are a genuine source of infection.
Do not starve a bird onto a new diet. Birds die from not eating far faster than they benefit from a better diet, and any conversion needs monitoring by weight.
Do not assume organic or human-grade means safe. Avocado is organic too.
