Grit for birds: who needs it, who is harmed, and the impaction risk
Grit is sold beside every seed mix, but parrot-type birds husk their seed and have no use for a grinding aid, and free-choice grit can impact the gizzard of a sick bird. This guide separates insoluble grinding grit from soluble calcium products, says which species genuinely need which, and covers the signs of impaction.

Grit is sold next to almost every bird seed mix, and for the birds most people keep it is unnecessary and can be lethal.
Parrots, budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, conures and macaws shell their seed with the beak and swallow only the kernel. They have no use for the hard grinding stones that a pigeon or a chicken needs, and a sick bird left with an open dish of grit can pack its stomach with it.
- Insoluble grit (quartz, granite, silica sand) is a grinding aid. It stays in the gizzard.
- Soluble grit (oyster shell, cuttlebone, limestone) dissolves in stomach acid. It is a calcium source, not a grinding aid, and the two are constantly confused on packaging.
- Birds that swallow seed whole, such as pigeons, doves and poultry, use insoluble grit. Birds that husk seed with the beak do not.
- Grit does not fix a bad diet, does not supply meaningful vitamins, and does not settle a digestive upset.
- A bird that suddenly starts eating grit is telling you something is wrong. That is a reason to see a vet, not a reason to top the dish up.

A bird that is nauseous, malnourished or in pain will over-consume grit. Because the gizzard is a muscular grinding chamber with a narrow exit, that mass can block the outflow, and an impacted proventriculus or ventriculus kills. The birds most often lost this way are budgerigars and cockatiels, and they are exactly the birds grit is most heavily marketed to.

Why the gizzard changes the answer
Birds process food in two stomachs. The proventriculus produces acid and enzymes. The ventriculus, usually called the gizzard, is a thick muscular chamber that physically crushes what arrives.
In a seed-eating bird that swallows whole seed, the gizzard needs something hard inside it to press the seed against. Small stones do that job, and the bird replaces them as they wear down. Pigeons and poultry keep a working store of these stones and will actively seek them out.
A parrot does not present the gizzard with the same problem. It holds the seed in its foot or against the upper mandible, splits the husk, and swallows the softer kernel. The gizzard is still muscular, but the material reaching it is already broken open.
This is not a subtle difference in efficiency. It is the difference between a mill that needs millstones and a mill that does not.
Canaries and finches sit in the middle in most people's minds, but they also de-husk seed with the beak. That is why avian clinicians generally place them with the parrots on this question rather than with the pigeons.
Soluble and insoluble, and why the packet confuses them
Two completely different products are sold under the same word.
Insoluble grit is quartz, granite or silica sand. It does not dissolve in stomach acid. Its entire function is mechanical, and it stays in the gizzard until it is worn down or passed.
Soluble grit is oyster shell, limestone or cuttlebone. It dissolves. It contributes calcium and it does no grinding at all.
An owner who reads that their bird "needs grit for calcium" and then buys a bag of granite grit has bought something that provides no calcium and carries an impaction risk. An owner who reads that "grit causes blockages" and then throws away the cuttlebone has removed a safe calcium source for no reason.
The way to stay out of the confusion is to ignore the word grit entirely and ask two separate questions. Does this species need a grinding aid? Does this bird need more calcium, and from what?
What a bird actually needs for calcium
Calcium matters most in laying hens of any species, in growing birds, and in African grey parrots, which are recognised as being prone to low blood calcium.
The usable sources are a formulated pelleted diet, cuttlebone, a plain mineral block, and calcium-containing foods such as dark leafy greens. Calcium also needs vitamin D3 to be absorbed, which comes from the diet in a formulated food or from appropriate ultraviolet lighting where that is provided.
Seed mixes are the reason calcium problems appear at all. Most seeds are high in fat and low in calcium, and a bird allowed to select only sunflower or millet will eat a diet that is worse than the mix on the label suggests.
Adding grit does nothing about that. It is a small, cheap product that gives the owner the feeling of having addressed a nutritional problem that is still exactly where it was.
What healthy digestion looks like

A bird whose digestion is working is alert, steady on the perch and holding weight. Droppings and the weekly weight will show a problem before the bird looks unwell.
Droppings are the readout. A normal dropping has three parts: a formed faecal portion, a white or off-white urate portion, and clear liquid urine.
Whole, undigested seeds in the faecal portion are abnormal. They suggest that food is passing through without being broken down, and in a bird that is one of the classic signs of proventricular or ventricular disease.
Weight is the other readout. A gram scale and a weekly weigh-in detect a digestive problem weeks before it is visible, because feathers hide body condition completely. Weigh at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before the first feed.
A bird that is digesting normally also has a crop that empties. In an adult, food should not still be sitting in the crop many hours later.
Changes that mean act today
Regurgitation that is not courtship.
A bird that bobs its head and brings food up for a mirror, a toy or a favourite person is behaving normally. A bird that shakes its head and flings material sideways, with wet stained feathers around the face, is vomiting, and that is a proventricular sign.
Whole seed in the droppings.
Food is leaving the digestive tract unprocessed. This needs imaging.
Straining, or a hunched posture over the perch with the tail bobbing.
Tail bobbing at rest is a sign of respiratory effort, but combined with straining and a fluffed posture it is an emergency presentation in any small bird.
Sudden intense interest in grit, sand, cage floor covering or paint.
Appetite for non-food material appears in birds that are unwell, and in birds that are deficient. It also appears in heavy metal poisoning, where the bird has been chewing something metal and now feels ill. All three are veterinary problems.
Weight dropping week on week.
Any consistent decline needs investigation, regardless of how the bird looks.
The differentials your vet will work through
A bird that is regurgitating, losing weight and passing whole seed does not have one obvious cause, and grit impaction is only one item on the list.

Each of these is managed differently, which is why the useful thing an owner can do is describe the timeline accurately rather than guess the cause.
The routine that catches problems early
What never to do
Do not offer grit "just in case". There is no benefit to a husking bird, and the downside is an impaction that can kill.
Do not use grit or charcoal to treat a digestive upset. Charcoal in particular binds nutrients and does not fix the underlying cause, and a bird that is unwell should be examined rather than dosed.
Do not line a cage with sandpaper or gravel paper, and do not use sandpaper perch covers. Birds chew what they stand on, and abrasive perch covers also cause pressure sores on the underside of the foot.
Do not treat a mineral block as a substitute for a balanced diet. It is a supplement to an adequate diet, not a correction for a poor one.
Do not assume that because a wild relative eats soil, your bird needs a dish of stones. Clay and soil eating in wild parrots is understood as mineral intake and toxin binding, and it is not a grinding behaviour.
If your bird has been eating grit
Remove the source immediately, and keep a note of roughly how much was available and for how long.
Do not attempt to make the bird vomit, do not give oils, and do not offer anything to "flush it through". A bird with a partially obstructed outflow can be tipped into a full obstruction by that kind of intervention.
Take the bird to an avian vet the same day if it is regurgitating, straining, fluffed, or has stopped eating. Radiographs are the fast answer here, because grit is dense and shows clearly.
Bring the packet with you. Knowing whether it is granite, quartz, oyster shell or a mixed product changes the interpretation of the image.

Take with you: the weight log, a photograph of the last twenty four hours of droppings on plain paper, the food packet, the grit or mineral packet, and a list of anything metal the bird has access to. That combination answers most of the questions the vet is going to ask.
