The nitrogen cycle, the engine of a healthy tank

The chemistry of aquarium water sounds intimidating, but one process sits at the centre of everything, and once it clicks the rest follows. Fish constantly excrete ammonia through their gills and waste, and ammonia is highly toxic even in small amounts. In a cycled tank, one group of beneficial bacteria converts that ammonia into nitrite, which is also highly toxic. A second group then converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful and is removed by your water changes or taken up by live plants.

Those bacteria live on every surface, above all in your filter media, and they are the invisible life-support system of the tank. This is why you never replace all your filter media at once and never rinse it under chlorinated tap water, both of which can wipe out the colony and trigger a deadly ammonia spike. Beyond the nitrogen cycle, a few other parameters shape the water. The pH sets acidity or alkalinity, GH is the general hardness, and KH is the carbonate hardness that buffers pH and keeps it from crashing. Healthy water is clear, odourless and chemically stable within the range your species needs.

Reading the water and the fish

Healthy water is visually clear and has no real smell. The fish are active, well coloured and breathing calmly. Trouble usually announces itself in two places at once, the water and the animals. In the water you might see cloudiness that is white, green or brown, a foul rotten-egg or decaying odour, a heavy algae bloom, or an oily surface film. In the fish you might see gasping at the surface, lethargy, erratic swimming, clamped fins or a sudden loss of appetite. Treat any of these as an urgent prompt to test, because behaviour often shifts before the water looks obviously wrong.

Poor water quality is the direct cause of the most common aquatic illnesses. Ammonia poisoning inflames the gills red and leaves fish gasping and listless, and it is common in new or overstocked tanks. Nitrite poisoning, sometimes called brown blood disease, stops the blood carrying oxygen, so the fish breathes hard despite plenty of oxygen in the water. Chronically high nitrate is less acutely toxic but wears down the immune system and opens the door to fin rot, ich and fungal infections.

The maintenance routine that keeps water clean

A regular routine is not optional, and it is simpler than it sounds. For most established tanks a weekly change of about 25 percent is a solid starting point. Prepare the new water in a clean, dedicated bucket, add conditioner to neutralise chlorine and chloramine, and match its temperature to the tank before it goes in. Use a gravel vacuum to siphon debris from the substrate as you remove that quarter of the water, which lifts out solid waste before it can break down into ammonia. Refill slowly and gently so you do not blast the substrate or the fish. When you service the filter, never replace all the media at once, and rinse sponges or bio-media in the old tank water you just removed, never under the tap, so the bacteria survive.

Build a rhythm across the week and month. Each day, count heads, watch behaviour, check temperature and remove uneaten food after five minutes. Each week, do the change and gravel vacuum, test and log your parameters, and clean algae off the glass. Each month, rinse filter media in old tank water and check that heaters, filters and lights all work.

Handling the common problems

High ammonia or nitrite is an emergency. Do an immediate water change of around 50 percent with conditioned, temperature-matched water, add a detoxifying conditioner that specifically binds ammonia and nitrite to buy time, and hunt down the cause, whether a dead fish hidden in the decor, overfeeding or a failed filter. Cloudy water needs a diagnosis before action. White, hazy water is usually a harmless bacterial bloom common in new tanks that clears on its own, and large water changes only prolong it. Green water is an algae bloom driven by excess light and nutrients, so cut lighting hours and change water to lower nitrate.

Some situations call for professional help without delay. Seek an aquatic vet or experienced expert if several fish die within 24 hours, if all the fish are gasping or in respiratory distress, if you see severe disease such as large ulcers or advancing fin rot that is not improving, if ammonia or nitrite stays high despite repeated large water changes, or if most inhabitants become completely lethargic.

Advanced techniques and special cases

Once the basics are second nature, a few advanced skills pay off. Understanding how to cycle a tank properly, the four to eight week process of growing bacteria before fish arrive, is the foundation everything else rests on. For species needing precise chemistry, RO or DI water gives you a blank slate that you then remineralise with dedicated products to hit an exact GH and KH, the approach keepers use for discus or crystal shrimp. A quarantine tank remains one of the most valuable tools, letting you observe and treat new arrivals for four to six weeks without risking your display.

Needs also vary by life stage and species. Fry are extremely sensitive to poor water and need pristine conditions with more frequent, smaller changes. High-waste fish such as goldfish demand oversized filtration and larger, more frequent changes than a tropical community. Specialists sit at the extremes: discus want very warm, soft, acidic water, while African cichlids need hard, alkaline water with a high pH. Always research the specific animal in front of you.

What is cycling a tank and why does it take so long?
Cycling means growing the colonies of beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. It takes four to eight weeks because bacteria multiply slowly. Adding fish before the cycle is complete exposes them to toxic ammonia and nitrite, the classic cause of new-tank fish loss, so patience here saves lives.
How often should I change the water?
