The chemistry of aquarium water sounds intimidating, but one process sits at the centre of everything, and once it clicks the rest follows. Fish constantly excrete ammonia through their gills and waste, and ammonia is highly toxic even in small amounts. In a cycled tank, one group of beneficial bacteria converts that ammonia into nitrite, which is also highly toxic. A second group then converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful and is removed by your water changes or taken up by live plants.
Those bacteria live on every surface, above all in your filter media, and they are the invisible life-support system of the tank. Reading the water and the fish
Healthy water is visually clear and has no real smell. The fish are active, well coloured and breathing calmly. Trouble usually announces itself in two places at once, the water and the animals. In the water you might see cloudiness that is white, green or brown, a foul rotten-egg or decaying odour, a heavy algae bloom, or an oily surface film. In the fish you might see gasping at the surface, lethargy, erratic swimming, clamped fins or a sudden loss of appetite. For species needing precise chemistry, RO or DI water gives you a blank slate that you then remineralise with dedicated products to hit an exact GH and KH, the approach keepers use for discus or crystal shrimp. A quarantine tank remains one of the most valuable tools, letting you observe and treat new arrivals for four to six weeks without risking your display.
Needs also vary by life stage and species. Fry are extremely sensitive to poor water and need pristine conditions with more frequent, smaller changes. High-waste fish such as goldfish demand oversized filtration and larger, more frequent changes than a tropical community.
