Tetanus antitoxin

Tetanus antitoxin is used to neutralize the toxin produced by tetanus bacteria in contaminated wounds. It is most effective when given early, before the toxin binds to the nerves. Dogs and cats rarely get tetanus, so routine prevention is not needed. > **Important:** Watch closely for allergic reactions after administration, as this product is made from horse proteins. It is generally not safe for cats due to the preservatives used.

- > **Fatal Toxicity in Cats:** Avoid use in cats due to their inability to metabolize the **phenol preservative** found in the formulation. > **Anaphylaxis Risk:** All antisera can produce anaphylactoid reactions, especially if the patient has previously received horse protein products. Repeated doses increase hypersensitivity risk. Have **adrenaline** or **antihistamines** readily available during administration.
