Where to put a snake enclosure: sun, windows, radiators and draughts

A snake vivarium in direct sun becomes a solar oven that no thermostat can control, and a balcony adds falls, gaps, predators and escapes to an already uncontrolled temperature. This guide explains the greenhouse mechanism, the two ways a badly placed thermostat probe fails, the unregulated heat sources people forget, the cold sink a window creates at night, and how to choose a position that stays safe in every season.

Quick answer

A snake does not go on a balcony, and a snake enclosure does not go anywhere the sun can reach it. Those two sentences prevent most of the temperature emergencies that reptile vets see in summer.

The reason is not that sunlight is bad. It is that a glass or glass-fronted enclosure in direct sun becomes a solar oven, and your thermostat cannot save you, because the thermostat controls your heater and the sun is not plugged into it. The controller sees a hot enclosure, switches the heat source off, and the enclosure keeps climbing.

Where the vivarium sits in the room is a husbandry decision on the same level as which heat source you buy. Get it right once and it protects the animal every day thereafter.

The enclosure itself is the easy part. Where you put it in the room decides whether it works.

  • Never place an enclosure where direct sun falls on it at any time of day, in any season.
  • A thermostat cannot protect against solar gain. It only switches off the heater you own.
  • Never keep a snake on a balcony, and never leave one unattended outdoors.
  • Radiators, underfloor heating and heat from electronics are unregulated heat sources. Keep them away from the vivarium.
  • Fit a maximum and minimum thermometer and read it daily. It records the spike you were not in the room for.

Direct sunlight on a vivarium can kill a snake in a single afternoon.

Sunlight passes through glass, is absorbed by substrate, wood and decor, and is re-radiated as longer wavelength heat that does not pass back out. Enclosure temperatures climb far above the room. A snake cannot sweat and cannot pant effectively, so its only defence is to move somewhere cooler, and in a fully sunlit enclosure there is nowhere cooler to go. Signs of a snake in heat crisis include frantic movement, gaping, hanging out of the enclosure, loss of coordination and then collapse. This is an emergency and the damage is often already done by the time the animal stops moving.

Why glass and sun are the problem

Sunlight arriving at a window is mostly short-wave radiation. It passes through glass easily, travels into the enclosure, and is absorbed by whatever it lands on: substrate, wood, rock, the animal.

Those surfaces then re-emit that energy as long-wave infrared. Glass is far less transparent to those wavelengths, so a good deal of the energy cannot get back out. The enclosure gains heat faster than it loses it, and the internal temperature rises well above the room around it.

The rise is not gradual and gentle. A vivarium in a patch of afternoon sun can move from correct to dangerous inside an hour, and the front glass and any dark decor become hot enough to cause contact burns.

Your thermostat has no visibility of this. It measures a temperature at one point and decides whether to power the heater. Given a rising temperature it will simply turn the heater off, which changes nothing, because the heater was never the source.

This is the reason experienced keepers treat sun exposure as a placement problem rather than a management problem. There is no setting that fixes it. A blind that is usually closed is not a control measure, because the one afternoon somebody opens it is the afternoon it matters.

Seasonality catches people out. In midsummer the sun is high and its light may fall only near the window. In winter it sits much lower and reaches deep into the room, so a vivarium that has been safe since spring is suddenly in a beam of light in January. Check the room in every season, at several times of day.

The other heat sources that are not on your thermostat

Radiators. A vivarium above, beside or on top of a radiator receives a large amount of heat that your controller knows nothing about. Central heating comes on and off on its own schedule, often overnight and early morning, which is exactly when nobody is watching.

Underfloor heating. A wooden vivarium sitting directly on a heated floor conducts warmth into the base across the whole footprint, eliminating the cool end. Put the enclosure on a stand with an air gap, or in a different room.

Electronics and appliances. A vivarium on top of a cabinet containing a games console, an amplifier or a router accumulates heat from below. A tank next to a tumble dryer or an oven gets the same treatment.

Lighting. A bright room light close to a glass top, or a lamp shining onto the enclosure, adds heat and disrupts the day and night cycle.

Other vivaria. Stacked enclosures pass heat upward. The top unit in a stack often runs warmer than the bottom one with identical equipment.

Probe placement, alarms and the readings that matter

A thermostat is only as good as where its probe is.

The probe should sit where you want to control the temperature, usually at the warm end at the level the snake will actually be, secured so the animal cannot move it or lie on it in a way that gives a false reading. A probe dangling in mid air reads air temperature, not surface temperature, and a snake in contact with a heat mat is experiencing the surface.

Two failure modes are worth naming.

If the probe is at the warm end and something else warms the cool end, the controller does its job perfectly while the animal has nowhere cold to go.

If sun or a radiator warms the probe itself, the controller shuts the heater down, and after dark the enclosure drops well below target. Owners then find a cold, inactive snake and assume illness.

Use a mat stat or a pulse or dimming thermostat matched to your heat source, and choose one with a high-temperature cutout or an alarm if you can.

Independently of the thermostat, fit a maximum and minimum thermometer with the sensor at the cool end, and read it every day before resetting it. That single instrument tells you about the two hours you were not in the room, which is where these accidents happen.

Verify surface temperatures with an infrared thermometer at the basking surface, the cool end floor, and anywhere the snake regularly rests. Air temperature and surface temperature are different numbers and the animal experiences both.

Windows also make things cold

The reverse problem is quieter and does more slow damage.

Glass conducts heat away efficiently. A vivarium against a single-glazed or poorly insulated window loses heat to it all night, and in cold weather the cool end can drop below the species minimum. Draughts from ill-fitting frames and from trickle vents do the same.

A snake held too cold for weeks digests poorly, may regurgitate a meal, becomes inactive, and is more vulnerable to respiratory infection. Owners often interpret this as an animal going off food or entering brumation, when it is simply a room problem.

Insulate the back and sides of a wooden vivarium if it must sit against an external wall, raise it off a cold floor, and check the overnight minimum with the max and min thermometer during the coldest week of the year rather than in autumn.

If you intend to cool a species deliberately for brumation, that is a planned, monitored process with a health check beforehand. An accidental cold snap is not the same thing.

Balconies, gardens and outdoor time

The honest answer to "can I take my snake on the balcony" is no.

Balcony railings have gaps. Snakes fit through gaps far smaller than owners expect, and they can move fast when they choose to. A fall from a balcony onto a hard surface, or into a neighbour's property, is a realistic outcome and often a fatal one.

Balconies also have drains, cavity gaps and cladding voids, all of which a heat-seeking animal will investigate. Recovering a snake from a building cavity is frequently impossible.

Temperature on a balcony is uncontrolled and can swing from too hot in direct sun to too cold in shade within the same hour.

Birds of prey, cats and crows are real risks to a snake on an exposed surface.

Then there is the legal and social dimension. An escaped snake in a residential building is a serious matter in most places, and in some jurisdictions escape of a kept animal carries specific liability.

Genuine outdoor time, where it is appropriate at all, means a purpose-built, escape-proof outdoor enclosure with deep shade, a temperature gradient, a secure lid, and continuous supervision. It is a project, not a spontaneous decision on a nice afternoon.

If your interest is ultraviolet exposure, that is a reasonable question worth discussing with a reptile vet, and it is answered indoors with an appropriate lamp and a correct distance, not by carrying the animal outside.

Choosing the spot: a walkthrough

Stand in the room and work through it.

Interior wall rather than external wall, and not directly under or beside a window.

Away from radiators, heated floors, and the top of heat-producing appliances.

Not in a conservatory, sunroom or porch.

Off the floor if the floor is cold or draughty, and on a stable stand that will not be knocked.

Away from a door that slams and away from the main walking route through the room.

Away from speakers, washing machines and anything that transmits vibration through furniture.

Out of the kitchen, and out of any room where aerosols, air fresheners, scented candles or non-stick cookware are used, because reptile airways are sensitive to airborne irritants.

In a room whose lights are not left on late, so the animal gets a genuine dark period.

Then sit with a thermometer for a full day, including the coldest part of the night and the warmest part of the afternoon, before you trust the position.

My vivarium only gets sun for about an hour in the afternoon. Is that really a problem?
Yes. An hour of direct sun on a closed glass-fronted enclosure is enough to take it well beyond safe temperatures, and it happens fastest at exactly the time of year when the room is already warm. There is no safe daily dose of direct sun on a vivarium.
Can I use a fan or an air conditioner to offset a sunny spot?
You would be treating a symptom while leaving the mechanism in place, and both fail: fans do little for an enclosed vivarium because snakes do not cool by evaporation, and air conditioning fails in a power cut. Move the enclosure.
Should my snake get natural sunlight for vitamin D?
The requirement varies by species and the evidence is much stronger for some reptile groups than for snakes. If you want to provide ultraviolet light, do it with an appropriate lamp at a correct distance, chosen with advice from a reptile vet, inside the enclosure where the temperature is controlled. Carrying the animal outside solves nothing and adds several serious risks.
My snake stopped eating in autumn and sits at the cool end. Is that seasonal or is the room wrong?
Check before you decide. Read the overnight minimum at the cool end for a week, and measure the warm end surface temperature. Seasonal appetite changes are real in several species, but a cool end that has dropped below the species range because of a nearby window produces exactly the same picture and is fixable in an afternoon.

When to get help

Contact a reptile vet urgently for a snake found gaping, frantic, uncoordinated or collapsed after a temperature spike, and for any burn on the belly or sides.

Contact them the same day for regurgitation of a meal, open-mouth breathing, bubbling or clicking with each breath, or a snake that has become limp and unresponsive after a cold period.

Book a routine appointment for repeated feeding refusal, poor sheds, or weight loss in a snake whose enclosure temperatures you have already verified, because at that point the problem is more likely to be inside the animal than in the room.

Bring a week of maximum and minimum readings, surface temperatures at the warm and cool ends, the thermostat type and where the probe sits, a photograph of the enclosure in its room, the substrate and humidity, and the feeding and shedding history. For temperature-related problems, the room is the patient as much as the animal is.
