Turtle nesting and egg binding: the female with nowhere to lay
A female turtle produces eggs whether or not a male has ever been present, and in a bare tank with no land she has nowhere to lay them. Retained eggs cause infection, rupture and death, and the related condition where follicles enlarge and never ovulate is one of the commonest reasons a well-fed captive female stops eating. An egg that is visible at the vent may be one of several, may be stuck against a deformed pelvis, and may already be adhered to the oviduct. Pulling tears the oviduct and squeezing ruptures the egg inside the body, which spills yolk into the coelom and causes a severe inflammatory reaction. Hormonal induction given without knowing whether the tract is obstructed can rupture it. This is a veterinary procedure and it needs imaging first.

Why a lone female still lays
In mammals, ovulation and pregnancy are linked to mating. In reptiles they are not.
A female turtle develops follicles on her ovary on a seasonal cycle driven by day length, temperature and her own body condition. Those follicles ovulate, pass into the oviduct, and are shelled, regardless of whether any male has been anywhere near her.
The result is a clutch of infertile eggs that she is physiologically committed to laying. The eggs will not hatch and are of no interest to her afterwards, but they still have to leave her body.
Captivity removes the last step.
In the wild she leaves the water, walks until she finds soil with the right moisture and temperature, digs a chamber with her hind limbs, lays into it, covers it and returns.
In a typical indoor set-up she has water, a basking platform, and nothing she can dig. She has the drive, the eggs, and no way to complete the sequence.
Well-fed captive females do this more, not less.
Reproductive activity is condition dependent. A female with abundant food and a stable warm environment has the reserves to build follicles repeatedly, which is why captive females often cycle more often than wild ones and why obesity and reproductive problems travel together.

A female that has left the water and is walking on a hard floor is not exploring. She is looking for ground she can dig, and a smooth surface gives her nothing.
What nesting looks like
Owners usually describe this as the turtle acting strangely rather than as reproductive behaviour.
Restlessness in the water.
Swimming laps, pacing the length of the tank, pushing at the glass at one end, and repeatedly trying to climb the wall or the filter.
Unusual time spent out of the water.
She hauls out and stays out, not basking in the usual settled posture but moving around on the platform.
Escape attempts.
A female that has never tried to leave the enclosure suddenly climbing out is often a gravid female setting off to find soil. This is also when turtles go missing.
Digging and scraping.
Hind limbs scraping at the platform, at the substrate, in a corner, or at anything with texture. She may excavate the gravel in the tank repeatedly.
Refusing food.
Common, and it is the sign that most often sends owners looking for an illness.
Restless at the wrong time of day.
Many females nest in the late afternoon or evening, and a turtle that is active when it would normally be settled is worth noting.
What normal completion looks like
She finds substrate, digs a flask-shaped chamber with her hind feet, settles into position, lays, covers the site, and then usually returns to normal behaviour and appetite within a day or two. Appetite returning is the clearest sign it is over.
Building a nest site she will actually use
This is the single intervention that prevents most cases.
A container she can get into and out of.
A large plastic storage box, a tray, or a partitioned land area, with a ramp or a slope from the water that she can climb without effort. If she cannot get onto it easily she will not use it.
Substrate she can dig a chamber in.
A mix of soil and sand, damp enough to hold its shape when squeezed but not wet. Depth is the part people get wrong. It has to be deep enough that she can dig a chamber with her hind limbs and have the chamber hold together, which means substantially deeper than the reach of her hind legs, not a shallow tray of sand.
Too shallow and she digs, hits the bottom, abandons and starts again somewhere else. Too dry and the chamber collapses as she digs. Both produce a female who tries repeatedly and never lays.
Warmth.
The nesting area needs to be warm, with a heat source over it, because she will not settle to nest on cold ground. Provide a gradient so she is not forced to dig directly under the hottest point.
Privacy and quiet.
This matters more than owners expect. A female that is watched, approached, photographed with a flash or handled during the sequence will frequently abandon the attempt. Some will not restart for days.
Set it up, then leave the room. Check from a distance or with a camera if you need to.
Leave it in place through the season.
Many females lay more than one clutch in a season, so this is not a one-off arrangement. For an adult female it should be a permanent feature of the enclosure.
For tortoises and terrestrial species.
The same principles apply, with a deep warm area of diggable substrate rather than a separate box.
The two conditions to know apart
Egg retention, also called dystocia
Shelled eggs are present in the oviduct and are not being laid.
Causes in captivity are led by having nowhere to nest, and then by low temperatures, calcium deficiency leaving the muscle unable to contract effectively, dehydration, obesity, an oviduct infection, an oversized or misshapen egg, a pelvis deformed by earlier metabolic bone disease, and repeated disturbance during nesting.
Signs are the nesting behaviour above continuing without result, then straining, then lethargy. Eggs may be palpable to a vet and are usually clearly visible on a radiograph because the shells are calcified.
Pre-ovulatory follicular stasis
Follicles enlarge on the ovary and never ovulate. They accumulate, fill the coelom, press on the lungs and gut, and the female slowly stops eating.
This one does not look like a reproductive problem at all. There is no straining and often no nesting behaviour. There is a female who is quietly off her food for weeks, sluggish, and sometimes looking fuller or heavier in the body. Because the follicles are not calcified, they do not show on a plain radiograph the way eggs do, which is why ultrasound matters.
It is common in chronically well-fed captive females, it does not resolve on its own, and it usually needs surgery.
Why the distinction matters to you
The first presents as a female doing too much. The second presents as a female doing too little. An adult female that has been off her food for weeks with no other explanation should have her ovaries considered, not just her appetite.

Purposeful travel across open ground is nesting behaviour in both turtles and tortoises. The animal is not lost, it is prospecting.
What else makes a turtle restless and out of the water
Before settling on nesting, rule these out, because several are urgent in their own right.
Water quality.
A turtle that will not stay in the water may be avoiding it. Check the water, the filter and the last change.
Water too cold.
A cold turtle hauls out and stays out, and stops eating. Measure with a probe rather than a stick-on strip.
Respiratory infection.
Also produces increased basking and reduced appetite, but usually with nasal bubbling, open-mouth breathing, a stretched neck with each breath, or swimming lopsided. That combination is a same-day case.
Aggression from a tank mate.
A turtle driven off the basking site or bitten will avoid the water. Look for bite marks on the limbs and tail.
Shell or skin problems.
A turtle with skin infection may avoid the water, and one that never dries out fully develops shell rot.
A male in breeding condition.
Males become restless too, and a male harassing a female is itself a reason she is trying to leave.
The tell for nesting specifically
Digging. A turtle that is unwell hauls out and sits. A turtle that is gravid hauls out and works.
What the vet will do
Expect a physical examination, radiographs, and often ultrasound.
Radiographs show calcified eggs clearly, and they show how many there are, where they are and whether any are abnormally shaped or fractured. Ultrasound shows follicles, which radiographs do not.
Bloods usually include calcium, because a female that cannot contract effectively is a different problem from one that is obstructed.
Treatment depends on what is found. Correcting husbandry and providing a proper nest site resolves a proportion of cases on its own. Calcium and hormonal induction may be used where the tract is not obstructed and the eggs are normal. Where there is an obstruction, an abnormal egg, a deformed pelvis or follicular stasis, surgery is the answer, and for a female with repeated episodes removal of the reproductive tract is often recommended to prevent it recurring for the rest of a long life.
Why you should not delay to see if she manages.
Eggs that sit for a long time adhere, the shells can be resorbed unevenly, and infection develops in the oviduct. A case that would have been an induction becomes a surgery, and a surgery on a debilitated animal is a much worse prospect than a surgery on a bright one.
What the vet will want to know

A female that has laid returns to normal quickly. Appetite coming back within a day or two is the clearest sign the sequence finished properly.
Preventing it, season after season
What never to do
Do not pull on an egg protruding from the vent. The oviduct tears, and a torn oviduct is a major surgical problem.
Do not squeeze the shell or press on the body to push eggs out. A ruptured egg spills yolk into the body cavity and causes a severe inflammatory reaction that is frequently fatal.
Do not give oxytocin or any other induction agent obtained without a veterinary examination. If the tract is obstructed, inducing contractions can rupture it.
Do not assume a female without a male cannot be gravid. This misconception is behind most delayed presentations.
Do not watch her closely while she is trying to nest. Disturbance is one of the most common reasons a female abandons and delays.
Do not leave a shallow tray of dry sand and consider the job done. If the chamber collapses as she digs, she will not lay in it.
Do not wait through a weekend on a female that has been straining. Time turns a treatable case into a surgical one.
Do not incubate or keep eggs from a lone female expecting hatchlings. Without a male they are infertile. Remove them and check that no more remain inside.

Book an appointment within the week for any adult female that has been off her food for a prolonged period with no other explanation, because follicular stasis is quiet, common and progressive, and because the same visit can confirm whether her calcium and UVB provision is adequate for a lifetime of laying.
