Turtle and tortoise sounds: hissing, clicking, and the noises that mean a chest problem
A turtle's hiss is air squeezed out of the lungs as the head and legs retract into a rigid shell, not a voice or a threat. The sounds that matter are the ones timed to a breath: clicking, wheezing, bubbling or squeaking point at the airway, and in an aquatic turtle deep water then becomes the immediate danger. Why a shell makes the sound
A mammal breathes by dropping a diaphragm and expanding a springy rib cage. A turtle can do neither. Its ribs are fused to the inside of the carapace, and it has no diaphragm at all.
Instead it ventilates by changing the volume of the body cavity from the openings. Sheets of muscle pull the shoulder girdle and the flank membranes inward and outward, and the limbs and neck sliding in and out of the shell act as pistons.
That single fact explains most of the sound a chelonian makes.
When a turtle withdraws quickly because it is startled, the head, neck and four limbs all come in at once. The body cavity has nowhere to expand into, so the lungs are compressed and air rushes out through the glottis. You hear a hiss.
It carries no meaning. It is not a threat, not a warning, and not an emotion. It is plumbing.
The same mechanics run the other way when the animal relaxes and pushes its limbs back out, which is why you sometimes hear a soft intake as a turtle settles.
Understanding this changes how you interpret everything else. A noise that happens once, on movement, is mechanical. A noise that repeats on a breathing cycle while the animal is still is coming from a narrowed or fluid-filled airway.

A shallow tray and easy exits are what a turtle with any breathing problem needs. Deep water is the danger, not the illness itself.
What normal sounds like
Spend a week listening to a healthy animal and the abnormal noises stop being ambiguous.
The withdrawal hiss.
Sharp, short, once. It stops the moment the animal stops retracting. A nervous or newly rehomed turtle does it often, and it fades as the animal habituates to you.
The nostril clear.
Aquatic turtles surface and blow water out of the nares with a small pop or snort. It happens on surfacing, not between breaths, and both nostrils clear evenly.
Beak and food noise.
Turtles have a keratin beak, not teeth. Crunching a snail, a pellet or a piece of cuttlebone makes a genuine click, but it comes from the mouth and only while eating.
Shell and claw noise.
Claws on glass, plastron scraping a basking dock, and a shell knocking a filter intake all produce clicks that owners regularly report as breathing sounds. Move the animal to a towel on a table for thirty seconds and the noise disappears if it was furniture.
Tortoise mating noise.
This one is a real voice and it surprises people. Males of many tortoise species produce loud, rhythmic grunting, squeaking or bellowing while mounting, often at a volume that carries through a house. It rises and falls with movement, not with breathing, and it stops when the animal is separated. It is normal, it is seasonal, and it is not a chest infection.
Female straining noise.
A gravid female digging a nest may grunt with effort. That is normal during nesting. The same grunt from a female who has been digging for a day and produced nothing is a different problem entirely and belongs to egg retention, not the airway.
Sounds that mean act today
The single most useful test is timing. Hold still, stay quiet, and watch the animal breathe without touching it. A chelonian breath is slow and the pause between breaths can be long, so give it several minutes.
If the noise arrives on the same beat as the movement of the flanks or the front limbs, it is respiratory.
Clicking or ticking with each breath.
Usually mucus moving in the upper airway. Early upper respiratory disease often sounds like a faint tick before anything is visible at the nostrils.
Wheezing or whistling.
Narrowing. Either swelling of the airway lining or secretions partly blocking it. In chelonians the respiratory lining can also thicken from long-term vitamin A deficiency, which changes the mucus itself and makes it stringy and hard to clear.
Bubbling or a wet, gurgling breath.
Fluid. This is a lower airway or lung sign and is the most urgent of the sounds.
Squeaking with every inhale.
A narrowed glottis. Some owners describe it as a tiny voice. It is not a voice.
Silence with visible effort.
Not every serious chest problem is noisy. A turtle that pumps its front legs hard with each breath, stretches its neck up and forward, or opens its mouth while away from the heat source is in trouble even if you hear nothing.
Nasal signs that travel with the sound.
Bubbles at the nares, a crust on one nostril, or a discharge that glues the nostril shut. Note whether one side is worse. Asymmetry often means a lodged foreign body, an abscess or a unilateral infection rather than a whole-airway disease.
Early, established and late
Early, a turtle sounds slightly ticky, eats a bit less, and basks a bit more than usual. Owners almost never bring this animal in, and it is the one that recovers easily.
Established, there is audible noise with most breaths, visible nasal discharge, reduced appetite, and swimming that is subtly off level. The animal still behaves fairly normally in between.
Late, the animal gapes, stretches the neck upward to breathe, will not submerge, floats markedly tilted, and stops eating. By this point a plain course of antibiotics is often not enough, and the vet may need to nebulise, give injectable medication, or sample the airway directly.
Because reptiles run slow, the gap between early and late can be weeks. That is a long window if you know what to listen for and no window at all if you do not.
Look-alikes that are not chest disease
Heat gaping.
A basking turtle sitting directly under a lamp may hold its mouth open to lose heat. Check the temperature at the shell surface, not the air, and make sure there is a genuinely cooler area to move to. If the gaping stops within an hour off the lamp and the animal is otherwise well, this was thermoregulation.
Post-dive snorting.
Water in the nares after a dive clears with a snort or two. It is not rhythmic and it does not persist.
Aspiration after syringe feeding.
Any owner who has hand-fed or medicated a turtle by syringe can introduce fluid into the airway. If noisy breathing starts within hours of a syringe feed, say so on the phone. It changes the diagnosis and the urgency.
Near-drowning.
A turtle trapped under decor or unable to reach the surface may sound clear at first and deteriorate over the following days as inhaled water triggers inflammation.
Mouth rot and stomatitis.
Infection in the mouth produces cheesy plaques that can partly block the glottis, so the noise is real but the source is the mouth. Look for a mouth held slightly open at rest, drooling, or a reluctance to eat something the animal normally lunges at.
Retained shed around the head in aquatic species.
Rare, but a ring of retained skin near the nares can narrow the opening. It looks like a pale film rather than a crust.
Straining sounds from the back end.
Grunting on straining points at eggs, a bladder stone, or constipation from dehydration. Watch which end the animal is working with.

Baseline to memorise: dry basking, mouth closed, neck raised without strain, nostrils clean and both open.
Why the water is the emergency
This is the part owners most often get wrong, and it kills animals.
An aquatic turtle floats by holding air in paired lungs that sit high under the carapace. If one lung fills with fluid or collapses, the buoyancy on that side vanishes. The animal rolls, rides high on the good side, and has to work to stay level.
At the same time the infection has reduced the volume of lung it can use, so it needs to surface more often, not less.
Deep water in that state is a trap. Turtles drown quietly and quickly.
So the first thing you do for a suspected chest problem, before any medication and before the appointment, is change the environment:
Drop the water so the animal can put its head above the surface while standing on the bottom. Give a gently sloping exit that a weak animal can climb. Keep the basking area available and correctly warm, because a reptile's immune response depends on reaching its preferred body temperature.
Do not withhold heat to make the animal rest. A cool reptile cannot mount an immune response, and cooling is one of the most common causes of the infection in the first place.
The routine that catches problems early
A weight trend catches chelonian illness earlier than almost anything else. These animals hold condition until they cannot, so a slow decline over three weigh-ins is worth more than any single observation.
What never to do
Do not pull the head out of the shell or force the mouth open to look. The neck retracts with real force and you can injure it. A vet opens a chelonian mouth with a purpose-made speculum and often with sedation.
Do not treat a hiss as aggression. Backing away from a hissing turtle teaches nothing and reinforces nothing, because the animal did not produce the sound deliberately.
Do not medicate with leftover antibiotics from another pet. Reptile dosing is different, drug choice depends on the organism, and an under-dosed course selects for resistance in an animal that may need months of treatment.
Do not add salt, tea tree, iodine or "reptile cleanser" products to the water for a breathing problem. None reach the airway, and several irritate the eyes and nares.
Do not assume a quiet turtle is a well turtle. Silence with effortful breathing is worse than noise.
Do not keep a suspected respiratory case in deep water because it "likes to swim".

- Refusing food alongside any breathing change
- A gravid female straining or grunting with no eggs produced

A settled tortoise breathes silently, with limbs relaxed and the mouth closed. That is the state you are comparing everything against.
Chelonian medicine is a specialism. General small animal clinics vary widely in how much reptile work they do, and availability differs sharply by country. Find and note a clinic that sees reptiles before you need one, because searching for one at nine in the evening with a gaping turtle is the worst possible time.
Bring these to the appointment:
- The audio or video of the noise
- Weights over the last several weeks
- Basking surface, cool end and water temperatures, measured rather than estimated
- The type and age of the UVB source
- What the animal eats, including supplements
- Whether it has been syringe fed or medicated recently
- The date anything new was added to the enclosure, including a new animal
That last point matters more than it sounds. A new arrival introduced without quarantine is one of the most common ways a settled chelonian collection acquires a respiratory pathogen, and it is often the piece of history that identifies the cause faster than examining the patient.
