Turtle and tortoise brumation: deciding whether to cool, and doing it safely
Brumation is a temperature-driven shutdown, and it kills chelonians when they are cooled while carrying an infection, with food still in the gut, or at an unstable temperature. This covers which species can be cooled and which must never be, the late-summer health check and weight assessment, emptying the gut before the temperature drops, holding the target band in a fridge, box or pond, the signs that mean wake the animal now, and the fortnight after waking.

Quick answer

This is the condition an animal has to be in before it is cooled: alert, well fleshed, clear eyes, clean nose, and eating well right up to the wind-down.
Turtles and tortoises do not have fur or coats, and nothing about them is groomed. What they do have is a winter, and getting that winter wrong is one of the few things in chelonian keeping that reliably kills an otherwise healthy animal.
Brumation is a temperature-driven shutdown, not sleep. It is safe only for species that evolved with a cold season, only in animals verified healthy beforehand, and only with an empty gut, a stable temperature and a way to check on them.
- Tropical species must never be cooled. Sulcata, leopard, red-footed and yellow-footed tortoises have no winter in their range and cooling them causes pneumonia.
- The killer is not cold. It is cooling an animal that is already ill, still carrying food, dehydrated, or held at an unstable temperature.
- Every animal needs a health check and a weight log before the temperature is allowed to fall.
- Skipping brumation entirely is a legitimate choice for most captive aquatic turtles and for any animal you are unsure about.
- If it urinates while cooled, brumation is over. Warm it, rehydrate it, and do not put it back.

Never cool a chelonian with any sign of respiratory disease: nasal discharge, bubbles at the nostrils, wheezing, open-mouth breathing, or a puffy face.
Reptile immune function runs on body temperature. At brumation temperatures the animal's defences are effectively switched off, while many of the bacteria involved continue to multiply. A mild autumn sniffle that a warm tortoise would clear becomes fatal pneumonia in a cold one, and the owner finds out in spring.

Why temperature is the whole story
A chelonian's metabolic rate follows its body temperature. There is no internal furnace to fall back on and no shivering thermogenesis to speak of.
Cool the animal and every process slows together: heart rate falls to a few beats per minute, breathing becomes intermittent, digestion halts, the kidneys largely stop, and the immune response goes quiet. That coordinated shutdown is what makes months without food survivable.
It is also why the temperature band matters so much more than the duration. Two animals cooled for the same twelve weeks, one held near the middle of the band and one drifting several degrees warmer, come out in completely different condition. The warmer one has spent the winter with a metabolism fast enough to consume fat and water but too slow to eat, drink or move, which is the worst of both states.
Photoperiod matters alongside temperature. Shortening days are part of the trigger, and an animal under a lamp on a summer timer in a cooling room receives contradictory signals. Wind the light down with the heat.
The other consequence of ectothermy is the one that kills quietly. Immune function, wound healing and antibody production all depend on the animal reaching its preferred body temperature. A turtle held below that range cannot mount a response to anything. This is the single mechanism behind most brumation deaths: the animal did not die of cold, it died of an infection it was carrying into the cold and had no ability to fight.
Which species brumate, and which must never be cooled
The question is not what the animal is called. It is what winter looks like where the species evolved.
Cool with proper preparation.
Mediterranean tortoises such as Hermann's, spur-thighed and marginated. Horsfield's, also sold as the Russian tortoise. North American box turtles. Sliders, cooters, painted turtles and map turtles. European pond turtles. These all experience a real cold season in the wild and have the physiology for it.
Never cool.
African spurred tortoises (sulcata), leopard tortoises, red-footed and yellow-footed tortoises, Indian star tortoises, and tropical Asian box turtles and softshells. These species come from ranges with no cold season. Cooling them does not trigger a controlled shutdown; it triggers immunosuppression and respiratory infection.
Depends on the individual.
Any animal whose species you are not certain of, any recently acquired animal, and any animal with an unknown or interrupted history. Identification matters here: a Horsfield's tortoise and a young leopard tortoise are not hard to tell apart once you know what to look for, but pet shops and private sellers mislabel constantly, and the two have opposite winter requirements.
Region changes this list in practice. A Hermann's tortoise kept outdoors in southern Europe faces a genuine natural winter; the same species in a heated flat in Singapore or Dubai has no reason to be cooled at all and can simply be kept warm and active year round. That is a legitimate choice, not a failure.
Southern hemisphere keepers have an additional problem. A northern hemisphere species arriving in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or southern South America may attempt to wind down on its inherited cycle in the local summer. Do not follow it. Keep the animal warm, lit and fed through the local summer and run the cooling, if you do it at all, in the local winter. Most animals reset within a season or two.
The five ways brumation kills
Naming the mechanisms is more useful than a list of steps, because the steps only make sense once you know what each is preventing.
Food left in the gut.
Cooling stops digestion but does not sterilise the gut. Retained plant material continues to ferment, producing gas the animal cannot pass and breakdown products it cannot clear. Post-mortems on animals lost in brumation frequently find a gut full of undigested food. This is what the pre-cooling fast prevents.
A subclinical infection.
Autumn is when respiratory infections and mouth infections are easiest to miss, because the animal is slowing down anyway and a bit of nasal moisture looks unimportant. Cooled, it progresses unopposed. This is what the pre-brumation vet check prevents.
Too warm, for too long.
The commonly cited failure is a garage or shed that sits several degrees above the target band. The animal metabolises steadily, loses condition and water, and emerges in spring emaciated, dehydrated and often unable to eat. More captive tortoises are damaged by being too warm than by being too cold.
Freezing.
Chelonians are not freeze tolerant. Sub-zero exposure damages tissue, and the eyes are particularly vulnerable, which is why blindness after a hard frost is a recognised outcome in tortoises overwintered in outbuildings. An unheated garage in a continental winter is not a hibernaculum, it is a freezer with a car in it.
Dehydration and its aftermath.
Months without drinking, in dry air, concentrates urates and stresses the kidneys. The damage often shows up in spring rather than in winter: an animal that will not eat, passes thick white urates, or develops gout. Good hydration going in, and humidity in the hibernaculum, are what prevent it.
What an animal fit to be cooled looks like
Run this assessment in late summer, while there is still time to fix what it finds.
Weight and condition.
For Mediterranean tortoises, the relationship between weight and straight carapace length known as the Jackson ratio is the tool in common use for deciding fitness to hibernate, and tortoise societies and reptile vets publish the chart. An animal below the lower line should not be cooled. Get the measurement done rather than judging by eye, because a tortoise's shell hides condition well.
For aquatic species, judge by the limbs and the neck. A well-conditioned turtle has limbs that fill the shell openings and skin that does not fold or pucker when the leg is extended. Deep hollows in front of the hind limbs, and a neck that looks loose, mean it is not fit for a winter without food.
Eyes.
Fully open, symmetrical, no swelling of the lids, no crusting or discharge at the corners.
Nose.
Dry and clean. Any moisture, bubbling, crusting or asymmetry of the nostrils is a stop signal.
Breathing.
Silent, through the nose, mouth closed. No head-bobbing effort, no gaping, no clicking.
Mouth.
Clean and evenly coloured, no plaques, no stringy saliva, no smell. Ask the vet to look; most owners cannot open a tortoise's mouth safely.
Appetite and behaviour into autumn.
The animal should have been eating well until the deliberate wind-down. An animal that went off food early in the season, before you changed anything, is telling you something is wrong.
Faecal screen.
A parasite burden that is tolerable in a warm, well-fed animal is not tolerable in one that is about to spend three months immunosuppressed and fasting. This is a routine part of the pre-brumation check.
Signs that mean stop, or wake the animal now
Urine in the substrate or the box.
The most important single sign. A brumating chelonian holds its bladder as a water reserve; emptying it means that reserve is gone and dehydration will follow fast. Warm the animal, soak it, and do not return it to the cold.
Weight loss beyond the expected slow drift.
A commonly used threshold is around one per cent of body weight per month of brumation. Losses beyond that mean the hibernaculum is too warm, too dry, or both. Weigh on the same scale each time.
Any discharge, bubbling or noise from the nose.
End brumation and get the animal seen. This is a respiratory infection until proven otherwise, and it will not improve while cold.
Persistent activity.
Occasional shifting is normal. An animal that is repeatedly moving, climbing, or trying to leave the box is too warm and is burning reserves. Check the temperature with a maximum-minimum thermometer before deciding.
Temperature outside the band, in either direction.
Above the upper limit, wake the animal rather than allow a slow starvation. Anywhere near freezing, move it immediately; frost damage is permanent.
Softness, sunken eyes, or a limp head and limbs.
Signs of significant dehydration or collapse. Warm gradually and get veterinary help the same day.
The routine that prevents most of these deaths
The sequence matters. Each step exists because of one of the mechanisms above.
Where they spend the winter
A refrigerator, for small and medium tortoises.
Widely used by keepers and recommended by tortoise societies because it holds a temperature that a shed or garage cannot. It requires a dedicated fridge that holds no food, a thermometer inside, the door opened daily for air exchange, and a trial run before the animal goes in. Ventilated boxes inside the fridge, and a check that the coldest spot is still above freezing.
An insulated box in a stable indoor space.
The classic double-box arrangement with insulation between the layers, kept somewhere with a genuinely stable temperature. The failure mode is an unheated room that tracks the outside weather, which in most climates means the animal spends the winter oscillating across the band.
Outdoors, in the ground.
Appropriate only for species native to a climate like yours, kept outdoors year round, with a burrow or hibernaculum below the frost line, protected from flooding and from rodents. Rats and mice do chew on the limbs of dormant tortoises.
A pond, for aquatic species.
Aquatic turtles overwintering underwater rely on a very low metabolic rate and on gas exchange across thin-walled tissues rather than on breathing. That works only if the water holds oxygen. It requires depth below the freeze line, minimal decaying leaf litter, and a surface that never seals over completely. Keep a hole open with a floating de-icer or by floating a ball, and never break ice by striking it, because the pressure wave travels through the water to the animal.
Or not at all.
For most captive aquatic turtles kept indoors, and for any animal whose fitness you cannot verify, keeping it warm, lit and fed through the winter is the safer choice. Skipping a year does not harm a healthy pet chelonian. Breeders cool their animals because a cool period improves reproductive performance; if you are not breeding, that reason does not apply to you.
Waking up, and the fortnight that follows

The first thing after warming is water, not food. A shallow warm soak lets the animal drink and pass concentrated urates before its kidneys are asked to work on a meal.
Raise the temperature over a few days rather than in one move, then restore full basking and UVB immediately. An animal that has warmed but has no basking spot cannot reach the body temperature it needs to digest anything.
Soak in shallow warm water within the first day, then daily for the first week. Drinking comes before eating, in that order, because the kidneys have been concentrating urates for months.
Expect food refusal at first, then a normal appetite within days once the animal is properly warm and hydrated. Offer favoured foods rather than a balanced diet in the first week; the priority is starting the gut.
Weigh daily for the first fortnight. A weight that keeps falling after full warmth and hydration is the signal that something is wrong.
Post-brumation anorexia is the classic spring problem. A tortoise that is fully warm, has been soaked daily and still refuses food after about a week needs a vet, not more patience. The usual findings are a mouth infection, an eye problem preventing it from seeing food, a respiratory infection that was brewing before cooling, or kidney damage from dehydration. Runny nose appearing within days of waking should be treated as a respiratory infection.
What never to do
Do not cool an animal you have owned for only a few months. You do not yet know its baseline, its true weight trend or its history.
Do not brumate a tropical species because it has gone quiet. A sulcata or a red-footed tortoise slowing in winter is cold, not brumating, and it needs more heat immediately.
Do not stop feeding and cool at the same time. Dropping the temperature while food is still in the gut is the classic fatal sequence.
Do not use an unheated garage, shed or outbuilding in a climate with hard frosts, and do not rely on how it feels to your hand. Use a maximum-minimum thermometer and read the minimum.
Do not use a fridge that also holds food, and do not skip the daily door opening. A sealed fridge accumulates carbon dioxide.
Do not wake an animal by putting it under a hot lamp or in hot water. Warm it in stages.
Do not put an animal back into brumation once it has woken, urinated or been warmed. The cycle is over for that year.
Do not brumate a first-year hatchling on the assumption that wild ones do it. Keepers genuinely disagree about hatchling brumation, and the safe version of the disagreement is that a hatchling is small, has almost no reserves, dehydrates fast, and loses nothing by being kept warm and growing for its first winter. If you do intend to cool one, do it on the advice of a reptile vet who has seen the animal.
Do not brumate an animal that has had surgery, illness or an injury in the same year without a vet clearing it specifically.

When to get help
Contact a reptile or exotics veterinarian the same day for any of these:
- An animal found cold, limp and unresponsive outside a planned brumation
- Any discharge, bubbling or noise from the nose at any point in the cycle
- Urination during brumation, followed by continued lethargy after warming and soaking
- Sunken eyes, thick white urates, or a soft, unresponsive animal on waking
- Any animal that has been exposed to frost
Book within the week for a spring animal that is fully warm, hydrated and still not eating, for weight loss that continues after waking, for swollen eyelids or eyes that will not open, and for the routine pre-brumation check itself, which should be a fixed part of the autumn.
Take the animal warm, in a ventilated insulated container, and bring the written record: cooling and waking dates, every temperature reading, every weight. A reptile vet can do far more with a weight log and a temperature record than with any description of how the animal seems.
Reptile-experienced vets are unevenly distributed, and the drugs and imaging available differ by country. Find yours in late summer, when you are booking the pre-brumation check, rather than in February when something has gone wrong.
