A turtle after surgery or a shell injury: dry docking, warmth, and getting them eating
Turtle recovery has a conflict no mammal has: the wound needs to stay out of water, and the turtle needs water to swallow food and stay hydrated. Dry docking keeps a wound out of contaminated water. Done without supervised water time, it dehydrates and starves the turtle.
Recovery in an aquatic turtle has a problem no mammal has. The animal lives in the water that will contaminate its wound, and it cannot swallow food without that water.
Everything else follows from resolving that tension. The turtle spends most of the day warm and dry, and goes into clean, shallow, warm water for supervised periods to drink, eat and pass waste.
- Temperature does more for healing than the medication does. Reptile immune function only works at the right body temperature.
- Aquatic turtles cannot swallow food out of water, so a permanently dry turtle stops eating.
- Shell wounds heal over months, not weeks, and are usually left open rather than sealed.
- Weigh daily. In a species that hides everything, weight is the earliest signal.
- Reptiles feel pain. A turtle that is unusually still is often a turtle that hurts.

Do not seal a shell wound with epoxy, resin, fibreglass or glue, and do not let anyone do it as a first response.
Sealing a contaminated wound traps bacteria against living bone in a warm, moist space, and the infection then spreads underneath where nobody can see it. Shell injuries are cleaned, flushed, stabilised and usually left open to heal from the inside outward, sometimes for many months. Patching was standard advice decades ago and has been abandoned for good reasons. If a shell is cracked, the first response is to keep the turtle warm, dry and still, and go to a reptile vet.

Why temperature is the treatment
A turtle is an ectotherm. Its immune cells, its wound healing, and its ability to process the drugs it has been given all run at a rate determined by its body temperature.
A turtle kept below its species range during recovery is running a suppressed immune system continuously. The antibiotic is doing its job and the animal is not doing its half.
That is why so many post-operative reptile cases that seem to fail on medication are actually failing on husbandry. Before you change anything else, confirm the water temperature and the basking surface temperature with a probe thermometer, not a stick-on strip, and confirm the turtle is actually using the basking area.
Ask the practice specifically where they want the temperature held during recovery. It is often at the upper part of the normal range for the species, and it is one of the few things entirely within your control.
Dry docking, done properly

Clean towels changed frequently, a warm draught-free container, and everything ready before the turtle comes out of the water.
What it means.
The turtle spends most of the day out of water, in a clean, warm, draught-free container, on soft bedding that is changed as soon as it is soiled or damp.
What it does not mean.
It does not mean leaving a turtle dry all day and hoping. A turtle that has no access to water will become dehydrated within days, will not eat because it cannot swallow, and will develop a second problem while the first one heals.
The container.
Large enough to move around in but not so large that it cools. Smooth-sided so the turtle cannot climb out. Nothing sharp, no substrate that can stick to a wound, and no standing water.
Heat.
A basking source at one end, with a genuinely cooler area the turtle can move to. Ambient warmth in the room matters too, because a dry turtle loses heat faster than a submerged one.
Bedding.
Clean towels or disposable paper, changed frequently. Damp bedding against a wound achieves the opposite of dry docking.
Water sessions.
Several times a day, in clean, warm, shallow water, for a defined period each time, then dried gently and returned to the dry container. Ask the practice how many sessions and how long.
Water depth should let the turtle stand with its head easily clear of the surface. A post-operative turtle may be weak, may have altered buoyancy, and drowning in water it would normally handle easily is a real risk.
Offer food during these sessions. This is when the turtle can actually eat.
Drying.
Pat dry, particularly around any wound and in the leg pockets, before returning to the dry container.
Getting a turtle eating again
Appetite is usually the last thing to return and the thing owners worry about first.
Expect a delay.
A day or two of no interest after an anaesthetic is normal. Reptiles run slowly, and anaesthetic drugs take longer to clear than in a mammal.
Offer at the right temperature and in water.
A cold turtle will not eat. A dry turtle cannot. Both conditions have to be right at the same time.
Offer favourites first.
Recovery is not the time to improve the diet. Whatever the turtle reliably eats is what should be offered, in a form it recognises.
Use small amounts frequently.
Large uneaten meals foul the water and tell you nothing. Small offerings at each water session give you a clear read on interest.
Watch the difference between refusing and being unable.
A turtle that approaches food, bites at it and loses it is having a mechanical or a pain problem, particularly after beak, mouth or eye surgery. A turtle that ignores food entirely is more likely to be cold, in pain, or unwell.
Do not assist feed on your own initiative.
Force feeding a reptile risks injury to the mouth and oesophagus and can cause aspiration. If a turtle is not eating within the timeframe the practice set, that is a phone call, and they will decide between appetite stimulants, assisted feeding or tube placement.
Reading the wound
Shell and skin wounds in turtles look alarming for a long time. Knowing what normal slow healing looks like prevents both panic and complacency.

Photograph the wound in the same light and from the same angle every few days. Shell healing is so slow that progress is genuinely hard to judge by memory, and a photograph series answers the question in seconds.
What changes by species
Sliders, cooters and map turtles.
The standard aquatic pattern above. Strong swimmers normally, but weak after surgery.
Musk and mud turtles.
Poor swimmers even when well, and they walk on the bottom rather than swimming. Water depth during recovery sessions must be shallow enough that they can reach air by standing, not by swimming.
Soft-shelled turtles.
Their skin-covered shell is delicate and dries and abrades far more easily. Dry docking has to be gentler and on softer bedding, and the practice may want a different balance of dry and wet time entirely.
Box turtles and other semi-terrestrial species.
Live largely on land, so the plan is closer to a warm, clean, dry enclosure with regular shallow soaks for hydration rather than swim sessions.
Tortoises.
Do not swim, and can drown. Hydration comes from shallow soaks in warm water deep enough to reach the lower shell but never the head.
Hatchlings and small juveniles.
Lose heat and water far faster for their size, so both the drying and the cooling risks are amplified. They need closer monitoring and shorter dry intervals.
Older or previously ill turtles.
Less reserve, slower healing, and more likely to have concurrent problems such as poor bone density that affect how a shell repair holds.
What to pause during recovery
Routine shell cleaning stops during recovery. Nothing touches a healing area unless the practice has asked you to clean it.
Routine shell brushing and algae removal stop until the practice says otherwise.
Handling for any reason other than treatment stops. Every handling event costs the turtle heat and stress.
Tank mates come out, or the patient does. Other turtles bite at wounds, compete for the basking spot, and foul the water.
Substrate comes out of the recovery container. Gravel, sand and bark all stick to wounds.
Deep water goes, until the turtle is confirmed to be swimming and surfacing normally.
Live prey stops. A struggling feeder animal can injure a weakened turtle or a healing site.
Medication at home
Injections.
Many reptile antibiotics are given by injection, and practices often teach owners to give them at home over a long course. Take the training if it is offered, ask them to watch you do the first one, and keep a written record of every dose.
Oral medication.
Given by syringe at the side of the mouth. Turtles resist by pulling the head into the shell, so ask to be shown the technique rather than improvising.
Topical treatment.
Applied after drying, and usually with a period out of water afterwards so it stays where it was put.
Pain relief.
Reptiles feel pain, and an animal that is quiet and still after surgery may be comfortable or may be hurting. If pain relief has not been dispensed, ask why. A turtle in pain eats less, moves less, and heals more slowly, so analgesia is part of the recovery rather than an optional extra.
Finish the course.
Reptile courses are long because reptile metabolism is slow. Stopping when the animal looks better is a common cause of relapse and of resistant infection.
What the vet will want at each recheck
What never to do
Do not seal, patch or glue a shell injury.
Do not leave a turtle dry all day with no water access.
Do not return a post-operative turtle to deep water until it is swimming and surfacing confidently.
Do not put a turtle in direct sun to warm it, especially in a container it cannot leave. Overheating kills quickly.
Do not use fish tank antibiotics, pet shop remedies, or medication left over from another animal.
Do not stop antibiotics early because the turtle looks better.
Do not leave the turtle in the water with the wound while the tank is dirty and hope it will be fine.
Do not use a heat mat under a plastic container without a thermostat. Uncontrolled contact heat causes serious burns in reptiles.
How long will a cracked shell take to heal?
My turtle will not eat and it has been three days. Is that an emergency?
Can my turtle go back in the main tank once the stitches are out?
The water in the recovery tub gets dirty within minutes. Is that a problem?
When to get help

Alertness, clear eyes and a head held normally are the daily signs that recovery is on track.
Contact the practice the same day for discharge or smell from a wound, softening or spreading discolouration of the shell, loss of sutures, straining at the vent, a turtle that stops eating beyond the interval they specified, or any weight loss trend.
Treat it as an emergency if the turtle cannot right itself, is swimming tilted, cannot reach the surface, is breathing with an open mouth or with obvious effort, or is cold and unresponsive.
While you arrange the appointment, keep the turtle warm and dry, keep the water shallow enough that it can breathe without swimming, and take the weight record, the medication log and the wound photographs with you. Those three documents usually answer more questions than the examination does.
