Toxic and Safe Plants for Lizards: Browsers Versus Insectivores
Whether houseplants matter to a lizard depends on whether it browses. Iguanas, uromastyx and adult bearded dragons eat leaves; leopard geckos and chameleons do not, and for them the risk is soil, fertiliser and systemic pesticide. This sorts the species, names the plant groups worth taking seriously, and explains why reptile toxicity data is thin enough that a safe list beats a toxic list.

Whether houseplants matter to your lizard depends almost entirely on whether your lizard eats plants. That single question sorts the risk, and most general pet toxic-plant lists ignore it completely.
A green iguana, a uromastyx or an adult bearded dragon will browse. An adult leopard gecko, a crested gecko or a chameleon will not eat leaves at all, and for those species the plant risk is a different one: pesticide residue, fertiliser in the soil, soil ingested while hunting, and physical hazards.
A browsing lizard given free access to a room will sample the plants in it. That behaviour, not the plant list, is what creates the risk.
- Sort your species first: browsers eat leaves, insectivores do not, and the risk profile is completely different.
- Plant toxicity data for reptiles is thin. Most published lists are extrapolated from dogs, cats, horses or livestock, and the extrapolation is imperfect.
- Because the data is thin, the safe rule is to allow only plants known to be safe for that species, rather than to avoid a list of known toxic ones.
- Soil, fertiliser, systemic pesticides, hydrogel granules and drainage stones are hazards for every lizard, browsing or not.
- There is no gum colour or capillary refill check in a lizard. Suspected plant ingestion is assessed by behaviour, breathing, droppings, drooling and swelling.

Because reptile-specific toxicity data is limited, the honest position is that many houseplants are simply untested in lizards rather than proven safe. Any lizard with free access to a room will investigate what is in it, and browsing species will taste it. Keep the enclosure and the free-roam area planted only with species you have positively confirmed as safe for reptiles, and keep every other plant out of reach entirely.

Which lizards actually browse
This is the question that determines everything else.
Fully herbivorous species that eat plants as their main diet.
Green iguanas, uromastyx, chuckwallas and rhinoceros iguanas. These animals will investigate and eat plant material readily, and a plant within reach is a plant they will try.
Omnivores that become substantially herbivorous as adults.
Bearded dragons are the important example. Juveniles are heavily insectivorous, but adults eat a mostly plant diet, and an adult dragon free-roaming a room will taste what is in it.
Blue-tongue skinks and several other skinks are omnivorous and will also sample plant material.
Primarily insectivorous species that occasionally take plant matter.
Some skinks, some agamids, and juvenile omnivores. Low but not zero.
Species that do not eat leaves at all.
Leopard geckos, chameleons, most day geckos, monitors, tegus as adults and most true insectivores and carnivores.
Crested geckos and other Rhacodactylus species are worth naming separately: they eat fruit and nectar in the wild and take a prepared fruit-based diet in captivity, so they are interested in soft sweet material rather than in leaves, but they will still lick and mouth surfaces in a planted enclosure.
For all the non-browsing species, the plant risk is not the leaf. It is the soil, the pesticide residue on the leaf surface transferred to a hunting tongue, the fertiliser in the pot, and the physical hazard of the planting.
Plants and plant groups worth taking seriously
The honest framing here matters. There is limited reptile-specific research, and most available lists are drawn from small-animal, equine or livestock toxicology. That means the groups below are known hazards in animals generally and should be treated as unsafe for lizards, but the absence of a plant from any list is not evidence that it is safe.
Insoluble calcium oxalate plants.
Dieffenbachia, philodendron, monstera, pothos, peace lily, arrowhead vine, ZZ plant, caladium and calla lily.
These contain needle-shaped crystals that penetrate the mouth lining on chewing, producing immediate intense pain, drooling and swelling of the mouth, tongue and throat. Swelling severe enough to affect the airway is the danger, and this is the most common houseplant incident in browsing pets.
Soluble oxalate plants.
Rhubarb leaves, and to a lesser extent spinach and some other greens.
These bind calcium in the body rather than injuring the mouth. For a reptile that is already vulnerable to calcium deficiency, this is a meaningful concern, and it is why spinach is kept as an occasional item rather than a staple in herbivorous diets.
Lilies.
True lilies and daylilies are severely toxic to cats. Their effect on reptiles is not well characterised, which means they should be treated as unsafe rather than assumed to be fine.
Euphorbia group.
Poinsettia, crown of thorns, pencil cactus and various ornamental succulents. The milky sap is a direct irritant to skin, mouth and eyes. Some of these are sold as decorative succulents and end up in arid enclosures.
Bulb plants.
Amaryllis, daffodil, tulip, hyacinth. The bulb is the most concentrated part and is often at soil level where a ground-dwelling lizard can reach it.
Nightshade family ornamentals.
Including the green parts of tomato and potato plants and various ornamental relatives.
Ivy, oleander, foxglove, yew, azalea and rhododendron.
All well-established as toxic across animal species, and all common in gardens and outdoor enclosure surrounds.
Aloe.
Frequently placed in arid enclosures for appearance. It contains compounds that cause digestive upset in several species, so it is not a safe default despite its reputation.
Avocado.
The plant as well as the fruit. Persin is dangerously toxic to birds and harmful to several other species, and there is no good reason to have it near a lizard.
Cacti and spiny succulents.
Not toxic, but a genuine physical hazard. Spines cause eye injuries and embedded wounds, and a lizard that climbs will make contact.
The hazards that are not the plant
These apply to every lizard, including species that never eat a leaf.
Systemic pesticides.
Commercial nursery plants are frequently treated with systemic insecticides that are taken up into the plant tissue. Rinsing the leaves does not remove them. A plant brought home from a shop should be assumed treated, and should not be used in an enclosure. If a plant is to be used, it needs to be sourced untreated, or repotted into clean substrate and grown on for a long period, and even then the safest approach is to buy from a supplier who confirms no systemic treatment.
Insects hunted in a treated planted enclosure can also carry residue to an insectivore.
Fertiliser.
Slow-release granules and pellets in potting compost look exactly like something to eat, and lizards eat them.
Hydrogel and water-retaining crystals.
Present in many commercial potting composts. They swell and are an impaction hazard.
Potting soil, bark chips and drainage gravel.
Ground-feeding lizards take mouthfuls of substrate along with food, and this is one of the commonest causes of impaction. Fine loose material and small stones are the worst offenders.
Perlite and vermiculite, which are visually attractive to a lizard and not meant to be eaten.
Mould in permanently damp substrate, which is a respiratory issue in a humid enclosure.
Plants near heat sources, which dry out, drop material and present a fire risk if leaves contact a lamp.

Planting is only as safe as the substrate under it. Fertiliser granules, hydrogel and loose gravel are eaten far more often than leaves are.
How to plant an enclosure safely
Start from the safe list, not the toxic list. Choose from plants positively confirmed as safe for the species you keep, rather than choosing anything not on a toxic list.
Source untreated. Ask specifically about systemic insecticides. Reptile-specific suppliers and specialist nurseries are more likely to be able to answer.
Repot into inert reptile-safe substrate, removing all commercial potting compost, fertiliser granules and hydrogel.
Cover the soil surface with large smooth stones, slate or a barrier the animal cannot swallow, so soil is not ingested during feeding.
Keep plants clear of heat lamps and basking bulbs.
Match the plant to the enclosure conditions. A rainforest plant in an arid enclosure dies and rots, and a dead plant in a vivarium is a mould source.
Consider artificial plants for species that browse. High-quality artificial planting gives cover and climbing without any ingestion question, and cover is what the animal actually wants.
For free-roam areas, move the plants rather than trying to police the lizard. A browsing lizard given room access will get to a plant eventually.

Clean water available at all times matters more after any suspected ingestion than any home remedy does.
If you think your lizard has eaten something
Remove the animal from the plant and take away access.
Identify the plant. Photograph the whole plant, the leaves, and any label. If you have a name, keep it. This is the single most useful thing you can do.
Photograph the damage to the plant, which tells the vet how much may have been eaten.
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for signs.
Do not induce vomiting. There is no safe way for an owner to do this in a reptile.
Do not give milk, oil, activated charcoal or any home remedy.
Do not force water into the mouth. The glottis sits at the front of a reptile's mouth and fluid readily enters the lungs.
Take the plant, or a sample of it, with you.
Watch for: drooling, pawing or rubbing at the mouth, swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat, gaping, laboured breathing, vomiting or regurgitation, sudden lethargy, tremors, weakness, straining, or a change in droppings.
There is no gum colour to check and no capillary refill time in a reptile. Assess instead whether the animal is alert, whether it can right itself, whether breathing is quiet and the mouth closed, whether there is any swelling around the mouth, and whether droppings and urates continue normally.
What never to do
Do not use a general pet toxic-plant list without checking whether your species eats plants at all.
Do not assume a plant is safe because it is absent from a toxic list. Most houseplants are untested in reptiles.
Do not put shop-bought plants straight into an enclosure.
Do not leave commercial potting compost, fertiliser granules or hydrogel accessible.
Do not plant an enclosure with cacti or spiny succulents.
Do not let a browsing lizard free-roam a room with houseplants in it.
Do not induce vomiting in a reptile.
Do not give milk, oil, charcoal or any home remedy.
Do not syringe water into a reptile's mouth.
Do not wait for signs before calling a vet after a known ingestion.
Do not judge a poisoned lizard by gum colour or capillary refill. Neither exists in a reptile.

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian immediately after any known or suspected ingestion of an unidentified plant, before signs appear. Take the plant or a sample with you.
Go as an emergency for drooling, swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat, gaping, laboured breathing, tremors, collapse, or an animal that cannot right itself.
Book promptly for vomiting or regurgitation, sustained lethargy, straining with nothing passed, or a change in droppings following plant or soil contact.

The reliable outcome is a browsing lizard whose only plant access is the salad you chose and the enclosure planting you confirmed.
Bring the plant name if you have it, photographs of the plant and the damage, an estimate of how much was eaten, the time it happened, the species and weight of the animal, and the enclosure details. In plant ingestion cases the identification determines the treatment, so it is the thing worth spending your first minute on.
