Storing fish food: rancid fat, vitamin loss, and why the big tub is a false economy

Fish food is built on marine oils, which are the fastest-oxidising fats there are, and on vitamins that degrade in air, heat and damp. A large tub bought to save money spends most of its life feeding degraded food, and the effects show up as slow growth, faded colour, poor healing and infections rather than as anything obviously dietary. Fish food is mostly marine oil and protein, with a vitamin package sprayed or mixed in. Marine oils are the fastest-oxidising fats there are, and several of the vitamins are unstable in air, heat and damp.

That means an opened tub is on a clock. A large tub bought to save money is usually feeding stale, oxidised, vitamin-depleted food for most of its life, and the fish pay for the saving in growth, colour, immune function and, eventually, in disease that looks like something else.

  • Buy a pack size you will finish within a few months, not the largest one available.
  • Decant a small working supply into an airtight jar and keep the rest sealed, cool and dark.
  • Never put a wet finger, a wet spoon or a warm damp hand into the tub, and never feed leaning over an open tank.
  • Store away from the tank hood, the radiator and the window. Heat and light are what drive the chemistry.
  • A fish that suddenly refuses a food it has always eaten may be telling you the food has gone off, not that it is ill.

Damp food supports moulds that produce mycotoxins, and aflatoxin in particular damages the liver in fish as it does in other animals. Drying the food out afterwards does not remove the toxin, because the toxin outlasts the mould that made it.

Discard the whole container. Do not pick out the good-looking part, and do not use it for another tank or a pond.

Why the good food goes off fastest

The reason fish food is worth buying is the marine oil in it, and the reason it does not keep is the same oil.

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids have multiple double bonds in the fat molecule, and each double bond is a site where oxygen can attack. The more unsaturated the fat, the faster it oxidises. That is why fish oil goes rancid far faster than, say, beef fat.

Oxidation does three things at once. It destroys the omega-3 you were paying for. It produces peroxides and aldehydes, which are irritant and damage tissue rather than simply being useless. And it consumes the antioxidant, usually vitamin E, that the manufacturer added to protect the food, so an oxidised food is deficient in vitamin E as well.

The effects in fish are not dramatic and that is exactly why they are missed. Slower growth, faded colour, poorer wound healing, more frequent infections, and in prolonged cases liver damage. None of it looks like a food problem.

Vitamins degrade on a separate track. Vitamin C is the most fragile, which is why manufacturers use stabilised phosphate forms rather than plain ascorbic acid. Even stabilised, it declines with time, heat and moisture. Prolonged vitamin C deficiency in fish causes deformity of the spine and poor collagen formation, and it is a genuine cause of the bent-spine appearance owners usually blame on genetics.

Heat roughly doubles the rate of most of this chemistry for every modest rise in temperature, which is the argument against the tub sitting on the tank hood, above a radiator, or on a sunny shelf.

Air matters as much as heat. As you use a large tub, the food goes down and the air above it goes up, so the last third of a big container sits in a large volume of oxygen for months.

Moisture is the accelerant for all of it, and it also opens the door to mould.

The big tub, and the arithmetic that misleads

Weighing a portion once tells you how long a pack will actually last. Most owners overestimate how much food a tank consumes and buy several times more than they can use fresh.

Cost per gram falls as the pack gets bigger, which is why the large tub looks sensible on the shelf.

The calculation that matters is different. Work out roughly how much your tank actually consumes in a week, then divide the pack size by it. Most aquarium fish eat a startlingly small amount, and a large tub bought for a modest community tank can represent a year or two of feeding.

That food will not be the same food in month ten as it was in month one. You are paying less per gram for a product that spends most of its life degraded.

There are two sensible responses. The first is to buy small and buy often, accepting the higher unit cost in exchange for fresh food. The second, if a large pack is what is available or affordable, is to split it immediately on opening: a small airtight working jar for the next few weeks, and the remainder divided into sealed portions kept cold and dark.

Dry food keeps well frozen in an airtight container. The one rule is to let a portion come back to room temperature before opening it, otherwise moisture condenses onto the cold food the moment the lid comes off, which is precisely what you were trying to avoid.

Storing it properly

A small working jar is the practical answer to a large pack. Keep a few weeks' worth to hand and leave the rest sealed, cool and out of the light.

Keep the working supply in a small airtight container that the food nearly fills, so there is little air above it. Opaque is better than clear, since light contributes to oxidation.

Keep it cool, dry and dark. A cupboard away from the kitchen hob and the radiator is better than anywhere near the aquarium.

Never store food on the tank hood. It is the warmest, dampest place in the room and it is where almost everyone puts it.

Write the date you opened it on the container. Memory reliably underestimates how long a tub has been in use.

Never feed by holding an open tub over the tank. Warm humid air rises off the water into the container, and a splash or a wet finger contaminates the whole supply. Tip a portion into a lid, a spoon or your dry palm first.

Never return unused food from the tank side to the tub.

Do not top up an old container with new food. That guarantees the oldest food is never used and puts fresh food in contact with oxidised oil.

Keep the tub closed between feeds rather than leaving it open while you watch the fish eat.

Frozen, freeze-dried and live food

Frozen foods are stable while they stay frozen and degrade quickly once they do not. Thaw only the portion you need, in a small amount of tank water, and never refreeze what has thawed. Blister-pack formats exist precisely so that you can take one cube without exposing the rest.

Watch out for a freezer that cycles through defrost or a chest freezer opened repeatedly in warm weather. Frozen food that has partly thawed and refrozen shows as ice crystals and a change in colour, and it should be discarded.

Freeze-dried foods are extremely hygroscopic and will pull moisture out of humid room air through a poorly sealed lid. They also expand when they finally get wet, which is a problem for fish that gulp food at the surface and take air with it. Soak freeze-dried food in a little tank water before feeding.

Live food is a different subject with different risks, chiefly the introduction of parasites and pathogens, and it belongs to quarantine rather than to storage.

Reading the food itself

Good pellets are firm and hold their shape, with a clean smell. Food that crumbles to dust in the container, or that fish take and spit out, is worth examining before you investigate the fish.

Smell. Fresh dry fish food smells like dried seafood: savoury, slightly marine, not sharp. Oxidised food smells acrid, oily, or faintly like old paint or putty. This is the single most reliable test and it takes two seconds.

Texture. Flakes should be crisp and snap rather than bend. Pellets should be firm and uniform. Excessive dust at the bottom of a container that started as whole pellets means the food has been crushed or has dried out and fragmented.

Clumping. Food that has taken up moisture sticks together. That is the point at which mould becomes possible.

Colour. Fading, particularly in colour-enhancing foods with carotenoid pigments, indicates age and light exposure.

A greasy film. Oil weeping onto the inside of the container is a sign that the fat has begun to break down.

The fish's own verdict. Fish frequently reject rancid food before a person notices anything wrong with it. A shoal that has eaten the same pellet for a year and now takes it and spits it out is worth taking seriously.

When "off its food" is the food

A fish that stops eating triggers a search for disease, and that search is often correct. But before working through the fish, spend a minute on the food.

Open the container and smell it. Look at the texture. Check when you opened it and where it has been stored. Consider whether the batch changed recently, since manufacturers reformulate and a food that looks identical may not taste identical.

Then check the things that suppress appetite independently of illness: temperature outside the species' comfortable range, a recent water change with mismatched parameters, ammonia or nitrite above zero, a new tankmate, a change in lighting or in the room, or a fish that has simply been overfed for a week.

If the food is fresh, the water tests are clean, the temperature is right and the fish still will not eat, then it is a fish problem and the appetite is a symptom to investigate rather than a preference to accommodate.

Older fish are worth a separate note. Appetite genuinely does decline with age in fish, as does the ability to take large or hard pellets. Softening food, moving to a smaller pellet size, or feeding a sinking food where a slower fish can reach it will often restore intake in an animal that is old rather than sick.

How long does an opened tub of fish food last?
Manufacturers commonly suggest using dry food within a few months of opening, and that assumes cool, dry, dark storage in a well sealed container. In a humid climate or a warm room it is shorter. Judge by smell and texture rather than by any fixed period, and buy pack sizes that make the question easy to answer.
Can I keep fish food in the fridge or freezer?
The freezer works well for a bulk supply kept in an airtight container, provided you let each portion warm to room temperature before opening it. The fridge is less useful, because it is opened often, it is humid, and food goes in and out through the condensation range repeatedly.
My food is within its best-before date but the fish will not eat it. Is that possible?
Yes, and it is common. The date is for an unopened container stored as the manufacturer intended. A tub opened eight months ago and kept above a warm aquarium hood can be thoroughly oxidised while still being inside its printed date.
Does it matter if a food is a bit old for a hardy fish?
It matters less acutely and just as much over time. The consequences of degraded food are cumulative: slower growth, poorer colour, weaker immune response, and vitamin deficiency conditions that take months to appear. Hardy fish absorb the damage quietly for longer, which makes it harder to connect the cause to the effect.

When to get help

A fish that comes up eagerly and takes food cleanly is the result you are protecting. Interest at feeding time is one of the earliest things to change when something is wrong, with either the fish or the food.

Contact an aquatic vet or an experienced specialist if fish are refusing food across several days while the water tests are clean and the food is fresh, if a fish is losing condition despite eating, if you see spinal curvature developing in growing fish, or if several fish become unwell after a change of food or a change of batch.

Bring the food container with you, including the ingredient panel and the batch and date codes. Bring the tank volume and age, the stocking list, water test results, the temperature range across a day, how much and how often you feed, and how long the container has been open.

If you suspect mould, photograph the food and keep the container rather than throwing it away, because the batch and date codes matter if the problem turns out to be manufacturing rather than storage.
