Snakes and airborne hazards: diffusers, aerosols, smoke and substrate fumes

The most common way a household change harms a snake is not stress. It is the air. A new person moves in with a diffuser, scented candles, hairspray and a plug-in air freshener, or a room gets painted, and the snake sits in a low-ventilation box at floor level breathing all of it.

The compounds in these products are respiratory irritants, and some are absorbed through skin as well as inhaled. A snake cannot leave the room, cannot cough material out of its airway, and has one functioning lung to lose. Closing a door does not make a room a sealed compartment: shared air moves through gaps, vents and hallways, and heavier vapours travel downwards to floor level where the enclosure sits.

Why snake lungs are the weak point
A snake's respiratory system is built for a long, narrow body and a low oxygen demand, and every feature of it works against clearing an inhaled irritant.
One lung. In most snake species only the right lung is functional; the left is reduced or absent. There is no second lung to compensate when one is damaged.
A long trachea and a simple lung. The respiratory surface is much less elaborate than a mammal's, and in many species the rear portion of the lung is a thin-walled air sac that acts as a reservoir rather than a gas exchange surface. Material that reaches it does not come back out easily.
No diaphragm. Snakes ventilate using the muscles between the ribs. That produces enough airflow for normal breathing but not the explosive burst a mammal uses to cough. A snake cannot clear its airway the way you can.
Poor clearance. Mucus and debris that would be moved out of a mammalian airway within minutes stay in place for far longer.
A slow clock. Reptile metabolism runs slowly, and so does reptile disease. Inflammation, infection and the response to treatment all take weeks rather than days. The practical consequence is that a snake looks completely normal through the period when the damage is being done.
Add the enclosure itself. Reptile enclosures are ventilated just enough to prevent stagnation while holding humidity. That same restriction concentrates whatever enters the air inside them.

Substrate: the hazard that lives in the box
Pine and cedar shavings smell pleasant because they release aromatic compounds. Those compounds are the problem: they irritate the respiratory tract of small animals kept in contact with them, and cedar in particular has a long history of being implicated in respiratory and hepatic effects in laboratory and pet species.
Aspen shavings, plain paper-based bedding, cypress mulch and coconut-fibre products do not carry the same aromatic load. Choose your substrate for the species' humidity needs from among those, not from among the scented softwoods.
Dust is a separate issue. Very fine or powdery substrates create airborne particulate every time the snake moves, and that particulate ends up in a lung with no efficient way to clear it.
Ammonia is the third substrate hazard and the one that is entirely within your control. Urates and faeces breaking down in warm, humid substrate generate ammonia continuously. In a restricted-ventilation enclosure it accumulates at the level where the snake lies. If you can smell ammonia when you open the enclosure, the snake has been breathing it since before you noticed.
Spot clean promptly, change substrate on a schedule rather than when it looks dirty, and be particularly careful in humid setups for tropical species, where breakdown happens faster.
What breathing trouble looks like, in stages

Know your snake's normal resting posture. A head held persistently raised with the neck stretched is a breathing posture, not curiosity
Early. Reduced appetite. More time at the warm end. Slightly reduced activity. Nothing you could point to.
Developing. Head and neck held elevated, sometimes with the body flat against the floor of the enclosure. Small movements of the throat with each breath. Increased time in the water bowl in some species.
Established. Audible clicking, popping or wheezing. Open-mouth breathing. Bubbles or strands of mucus at the nostrils or in the mouth. Sneezing-like forceful exhalations.
Late. Gaping continuously, weakness, a snake that cannot right itself, refusal of food over an extended period with weight loss.
The gap between the early and established stages can be long, which is why owners so often say the snake became ill overnight. It did not.
Differentials worth ruling out. Retained shed over the nostrils, mites clustering around the nostrils and eyes, a foreign body, mouth infection, and simple low enclosure temperature all produce overlapping signs. All are checkable, and all are reasons to look before assuming.
The household conversation

Everything in the room becomes part of the snake's environment, including what is plugged into the wall
This is worth having explicitly with anyone who moves in, visits regularly or looks after the animal, because none of it is obvious to someone who has not kept reptiles.
Say plainly which products cannot be used in the house or on the same floor: diffusers, oil burners, incense, scented candles, wax melts, plug-in air fresheners, and aerosol sprays used near the enclosure.
Agree where aerosols may be used, which should be a room with a closed door, an open window and a different air path, and ideally not while the snake is at home.
Agree what happens before decorating, deep cleaning, pest treatment or any work that generates dust. The snake and its enclosure move out first.
Agree that flea and tick treatments for other pets are applied away from the reptile room, and that treated animals do not come into it until the product has dried and settled.
Put a note on or near the enclosure. People forget, and a visitor who lights a candle to be helpful will not think of the snake at all.
If exposure has already happened
Move the snake to clean air, in a secure container, away from the source.
Ventilate the room thoroughly. Open windows, and leave them open for far longer than feels necessary, because these compounds adsorb into soft furnishings, substrate and decor and are released again afterwards.
Replace the substrate and clean the enclosure and its furnishings, then rinse and dry them completely before the snake returns.
Keep the snake warm and at the correct end of its temperature range. Immune function in a reptile depends on being able to reach its preferred body temperature, and a cold snake cannot mount a response to anything.
Do not wash, bathe or wipe the snake with any product. If a liquid chemical has landed on the animal, that is a different situation and a reason to call a vet for specific advice.
Then watch, and keep watching. Respiratory disease in a reptile can declare itself well after the exposure, so a snake that seems unaffected in the first days still needs monitoring, weighing and a low threshold for a veterinary appointment.
What never to do
Do not use an essential oil diffuser in a house with a reptile, however natural the product claims to be.
Do not assume a closed door protects the animal. Air moves through gaps and vents, and heavier vapours travel down.
Do not use insecticidal foggers or pest strips in a house with a reptile in it.
Do not hang a pest strip inside or near a snake enclosure to treat mites. This is still recommended in some circles and it exposes the snake to a continuous insecticide vapour in an enclosed space. Mite treatment should be prescribed by a reptile vet.
Do not use pine or cedar shavings.
Do not clean the enclosure with bleach and an ammonia-based product in sequence. The combination produces a toxic gas, and both leave residues that must be rinsed away completely.
Do not put a reptile enclosure in a kitchen.
Do not conclude that the snake is fine because it looks fine after an exposure. In this species that is exactly what you would expect to see.
Do not treat suspected respiratory disease at home with steam, decongestants or oils. There is no safe home version of this, and aromatic products are the original problem.
I only run the diffuser in the living room, and the snake is in the spare bedroom. Is that safe?

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced vet the same day for open-mouth breathing, clicking, wheezing, bubbles or mucus at the nostrils or mouth, or a snake holding its head persistently raised.
Go the same day after any significant exposure to insecticide, fogger, smoke or a chemical spill, even if the snake appears unaffected, because treatment started early works better than treatment started once signs appear.
Book an appointment for a snake that has gone off food and lost weight after a household change, since respiratory disease in reptiles frequently presents as nothing more than that.
