Snake switching prey: live to frozen, mouse to rat, and how scenting works
Snakes need no gradual food transition because there is no gut flora shift to manage; what they have is a learned prey preference and strict physical requirements. This guide covers thawing and warming properly, scenting and braining, moving from live to frozen-thawed, prey size, the regurgitation interval, seasonal fasting, and the species differences from ball pythons to fish-eating garter snakes.

Quick answer
Snakes do not need their food changed gradually. That advice is borrowed from dogs and cats, where a sudden change of diet upsets gut bacteria and causes diarrhoea. A snake eating a whole prey animal has no such problem, and mixing a bit of rat into the mouse for a week achieves nothing.
What snakes do have is a strong learned preference for what they have eaten before, and a set of physical requirements around size, temperature and handling. When a food switch goes wrong, the failure is almost always refusal to eat or regurgitation, and both of those come from prey size, prey temperature, enclosure temperature, or the animal being handled too soon after a meal.
Present the new prey the way the old prey was presented, at the same time of day, in the same place.

A rat left in an enclosure with a snake that is not immediately interested will chew, and rodent bites on a snake cause deep wounds, spinal damage, eye loss and fatal infections. Even a mouse can inflict serious injury. Frozen-thawed prey is safer for the snake, safer for the rodent, and easier to source and store. If you must offer live prey because an animal has never taken anything else, never leave it unattended and never leave it in overnight. In several countries feeding live vertebrate prey where an alternative exists is also a legal offence.

Why the gradual transition myth is wrong
In a mammal, a food change alters the substrate available to the gut microbes, they shift population, and the animal gets loose stools for a few days. The advice to change food over a week exists to give that population time.
A snake swallows an entire animal, digests it over days or weeks with strong acid and enzymes, and passes a compact urate and faecal mass. There is no equivalent mechanism to disrupt, and mixing prey types has no meaning because there is no mixing: it is one item or the other.
What does exist is preference. Snakes learn what food looks and smells like, and many will refuse anything unfamiliar for weeks. The technique that works is therefore scent bridging rather than gradual mixing, and patience rather than persistence at short intervals.
The second thing that exists is physiology. Snakes are ectotherms and digestion runs on temperature. A snake that has eaten and then cannot reach its correct warm zone will not digest the meal properly, and a meal that sits undigested is regurgitated or rots.
Getting the mechanics right before you change anything
Verify the temperature gradient.
Measure surface temperature at the warm end and the cool end with an infrared thermometer, at the time of day the snake is active. Confirm the thermostat probe is where you think it is. A large proportion of feeding problems are temperature problems.
Weigh the snake and weigh the prey.
A gram scale is the most useful feeding tool you can own. Record the snake's weight before each feed and the weight of the item you offered. Over months this tells you whether the feeding schedule is right far better than any rule of thumb.
Check the size relationship.
The usual guide is that the prey should be no wider than the widest part of the snake's body. Snakes can swallow considerably larger, and doing so is the commonest cause of regurgitation, prolonged sluggish digestion and, in extreme cases, injury. When in doubt go smaller and feed slightly more often.
Confirm the snake is not in a state where refusal is normal.
A snake in shed with blue eyes will usually not eat. A gravid female may not eat. Many species reduce or stop feeding seasonally, and ball pythons in particular fast for extended periods in the cooler months without losing condition. Refusal in these contexts is not a food problem.

Weigh the snake and the prey each time. The pair of numbers is the record that answers most feeding questions later.
Thawing and warming properly
This is where most frozen-thawed feeding fails, and it is entirely fixable.
Move the item from the freezer to the fridge and let it thaw slowly, ideally overnight. Then bring it up to temperature in a sealed bag placed in warm water, changing the water as it cools. The aim is an item that is warm all the way through and warm on the outside, because a snake that hunts by heat will not respond to something at room temperature.
Never microwave prey. It heats unevenly, cooks parts of the item, can burst the abdomen, and leaves a frozen core.
Never leave prey thawing on a worktop for hours. Bacterial growth in a thawing rodent is fast, and spoiled prey causes regurgitation and gastrointestinal infection.
Never refreeze prey that has thawed.
For pit-bearing species such as pythons and boas, warming the head end of the item slightly more than the rest, with a hairdryer on a low setting for a few seconds, makes the target far more obvious to the snake.
Dry the item before offering it. A dripping wet rodent is unappealing and it wets the substrate.
Bridging the scent gap
Scenting.
Rub the new prey item against bedding, fur or a shed skin from the old prey type until it carries that smell. Rats scented with mouse bedding, and rodents scented with chick down or with gerbil bedding, are the standard approaches for reluctant feeders. It works because the snake is being asked to accept a familiar smell on an unfamiliar shape rather than a wholly new stimulus.
Braining.
Nicking the skull of the thawed item to expose a small amount of brain tissue releases a strong scent that overrides visual unfamiliarity. It is a standard and widely used technique for snakes that refuse otherwise, and it is often the thing that works when nothing else has.
Matching the presentation.
Offer at the same time of day, in the same place, with the same lighting, in the same manner as the food that was accepted before. Snakes are context learners, and changing three things at once means you learn nothing when it fails.
Animating the prey.
Hold the item in long tongs and move it in short, irregular movements rather than waving it. Stop when the snake shows interest. A dead rodent dragged steadily across a substrate does not look like prey; one that twitches and pauses does.
Leaving it overnight.
For shy species, place the warmed item near the hide entrance, cover the enclosure, turn the lights off and leave the room. Many snakes that will not feed while watched will feed in the dark. Remove anything uneaten in the morning.
Going smaller.
A snake that refuses a new prey type at the usual size will often take a smaller one. Take the small win, then build size back up.
Live to frozen-thawed, specifically
This is the switch most worth making and the one that takes the most patience.
Start with the snake genuinely hungry, which usually means going slightly past the normal interval rather than starving the animal.
Use a thoroughly warmed item, animated well with tongs, offered at the animal's usual feeding time, in dim light.
If that fails several times, offer a live item but hold it with tongs so it is presented rather than released, and switch to the thawed item at the next session while the memory of a successful feed is fresh.
Some individuals take many attempts across weeks. As long as the snake is holding its weight, that is acceptable. If weight is falling, stop the project and get the animal eating something, then try again later.
Never leave a live rodent unattended with a snake, and never leave one in overnight.
Species differences that change the plan
Ball pythons form the strongest preferences and fast seasonally. They are the species where scenting, braining, overnight offering and patience over weeks are routinely needed, and where owners most often panic unnecessarily.
Corn snakes and other rat snakes are usually straightforward feeders and switch with little difficulty.
King snakes and milk snakes have strong feeding responses and are more likely to bite the tongs than to refuse.
Boas take larger meals at longer intervals and are more sensitive to being handled after eating.
Hognose snakes naturally eat amphibians, and many need scenting with toad or with fish to accept rodents.
Garter and water snakes eat fish and amphibians, and this is where diet composition genuinely matters: some fish species contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1, and a snake fed exclusively on those fish develops neurological disease. Variety, and advice from a vet familiar with these species, matters more here than with rodent feeders.

After a meal the snake should be left completely alone. Handling is the most common avoidable cause of regurgitation.
After the switch: what to watch
Leave the snake alone for several days after a meal. No handling, no enclosure rearranging, minimal disturbance.
Check that a normal dropping and urate follow within the usual interval for that species and meal size.
Weigh weekly and plot the trend. A snake gaining slowly on the new prey is a successful switch.
Watch for regurgitation. If it happens, do not offer food again for one to two weeks, then offer something distinctly smaller, and review temperature and handling in the meantime. Repeat regurgitation is a veterinary problem, not a technique problem, and parasites and gastrointestinal infection are among the causes.
Watch the shed. A snake in good condition sheds in one piece; poor sheds often follow a period of poor nutrition or low humidity.
What never to do
Do not feed in a separate tub because you were told it prevents aggression. Moving a snake immediately before and after eating adds stress at exactly the wrong moment, and moving a snake with a full stomach risks regurgitation. Use a hook or another consistent signal to distinguish handling from feeding instead.
Do not handle for several days after a meal, and do not let anyone else pick the snake up during that window.
Do not offer prey that is too large in the hope of feeding less often.
Do not feed wild-caught rodents, amphibians or fish. They carry parasites, and in some areas they carry rodenticide.
Do not use a microwave, do not refreeze, and do not feed anything that smells wrong.
Do not keep offering food every few days to a snake that is refusing. Repeated failed attempts add stress and make refusal more entrenched. Space attempts out.

When to get help
Contact an exotics or reptile vet promptly for a second regurgitation, for refusal accompanied by weight loss, for a snake that is passing abnormal or bloody droppings, for laboured breathing or open-mouth breathing, or for a snake that appears to have swallowed something and then become unwell.
Book an appointment for a snake that has not eaten for longer than is normal for its species and season, for one that is losing muscle definition along the spine, for sunken eyes or loose skin, or for any snake that has been fed live prey and has an unexplained wound.
Bring the feeding log, the weight record, the prey type and weight, the measured temperatures at both ends of the gradient, the date of the last shed and the last dropping, and photographs of the enclosure. If the snake regurgitated, bring a photograph of what came up; its state of digestion tells a vet how long the meal had been in there.

A settled snake, a clean water bowl, an undisturbed few days, and a dropping on schedule: that is what a successful switch looks like.
