Snake substrate: bedding choices, impaction risk, and the woods that harm
Substrate is the humidity system, the burrowing outlet and one of the few things in an enclosure that can kill. Substrate is not decoration. It is the humidity system, the burrowing outlet, and one of the few things in an enclosure that can kill.
Most substrate advice is a list of products. The useful version is a list of jobs. Substrate has to hold and release moisture at the rate your species needs, allow burrowing if your species burrows, resist mould, and not poison or block the animal.
Two things on the shelf fail badly. Cedar and pine give off compounds that damage the airway and the liver. Dry, fine, indigestible particles cause impaction, and they do it most easily in a snake that is also too cool or too dry.
- Never use cedar. Avoid pine. The aromatic compounds that make them smell pleasant are the problem.
- Impaction is rarely caused by substrate alone. It is substrate plus a cool enclosure plus a dehydrated snake.
- The substrate is your humidity buffer. Misting a substrate that cannot hold water changes nothing an hour later.
- Damp is not wet. A snake lying on permanently wet bedding develops scale rot.
- Bare paper is for quarantine and hospital setups, not for permanent housing.

Do not use cedar shavings for any reptile, and treat pine as unsuitable.
Cedar contains volatile aromatic compounds that irritate the respiratory tract and are toxic to the liver. The exposure is continuous, because the snake lies in it and breathes the air immediately above it inside a closed enclosure. The damage is not obvious at first: it shows as chronic respiratory signs, poor sheds and general ill thrift that keepers spend months trying to fix elsewhere. Pine carries the same class of compounds at lower levels and is not worth the argument when good alternatives exist.

The four jobs substrate has to do
Hold and release moisture at the right rate.
This is the job most keepers underestimate. Ambient humidity in a closed enclosure is largely set by how much water the substrate is holding and how fast it gives it up. Spraying the air raises humidity for a short time and then it falls back to whatever the substrate supports.
That is why a species needing higher humidity does poorly on a dry, non-absorbent bedding no matter how often the keeper mists, and why retained sheds and stuck spectacles keep happening despite constant effort.
Depth matters as much as type. A thin layer of even a good substrate dries out quickly. A deeper layer holds a reservoir and buffers the swings.
Allow the animal to do what its body expects.
Many snakes burrow, push under objects, and spend most of their time in contact with something on all sides. A substrate deep enough to disappear into is enrichment in a way that ornaments are not. A snake that cannot burrow will often be found permanently wedged under a water bowl or pressed into a corner, which is the same behaviour finding a poorer outlet.
Not harm the animal.
Chemically, through aromatic oils. Physically, through particles that are swallowed and cannot pass. Respiratorily, through dust.
Be maintainable.
A substrate you cannot spot clean, or that has to be entirely replaced weekly, will not be maintained properly for long. Practicality is a legitimate criterion.
Comparing the common options

Match the substrate to the humidity your species needs, then set the depth so it can burrow.

Matching substrate to species
Dry-climate colubrids such as corn snakes, king snakes and milk snakes.
Aspen suits them well because it tunnels and holds shape, and they do not need standing humidity. They still need a humid hide during shedding.
Hognose snakes and other burrowers.
Depth is the priority. Aspen or a soil mix deep enough for the snake to vanish into. A shallow layer wastes the species' main behaviour.
Ball pythons.
Need meaningful humidity, especially around shedding. Coconut husk, cypress mulch or a soil mix works. Aspen is a common cause of the chronically poor sheds seen in this species.
Boa constrictors and rainbow boas.
Higher humidity again, with rainbow boas being particularly unforgiving. Coconut husk or a soil mix, deep, with good moisture retention.
Green tree pythons and other arboreal species.
Spend little time on the floor, but the substrate is still the humidity engine, so it must hold moisture. Perches and their placement matter more than burrowing depth.
Sand boas.
The obvious choice is sand and it is not the best one. A fine soil mix, or a soil and sand blend, holds burrows better and reduces the ingestion risk from feeding.
Garter snakes.
Moderate humidity, active foragers, and they defecate frequently, so ease of spot cleaning matters more here than for most.
The general rule: pick the substrate from the species' humidity requirement first, then check it can be made deep enough to burrow in, then check it is not on the never list.
Impaction: what actually causes it

Water availability and enclosure temperature affect impaction risk as much as the substrate itself.
Impaction is often discussed as though substrate alone decides it. In practice three things combine.
Ingestion.
Snakes do not eat substrate on purpose. They swallow it because it is stuck to prey, or because they struck, missed and got a mouthful, or because they dragged a rodent through bedding while repositioning it. Fine, dry particles stick to damp prey especially well.
Slow transit.
A snake's digestive system runs at a rate set by temperature. If the warm end is not warm enough, or the snake cannot reach it, everything moves more slowly and material that would otherwise pass has time to accumulate.
Dehydration.
A dehydrated snake produces drier gut contents. This is why a snake in a low-humidity enclosure with a small water bowl is at higher risk on the same substrate than one that is properly hydrated.
That combination is the reason two keepers can use the same bedding with different outcomes. It is also why the fix for a snake at risk is not only changing substrate but checking the warm end temperature, the water bowl and the humidity.
Signs, in order of appearance.
Longer than normal between defecations, judged against that individual's own baseline rather than a general rule, since healthy snakes vary enormously. Then reduced appetite. Then a firm, persistent swelling that does not move along the body over days. Then lethargy, straining at the vent, and eventually regurgitation.
Differentials for a lump or for not passing faeces.

What not to do while you wait for an appointment.
Do not force feed. Do not give mineral oil or any oil by mouth, because snakes aspirate easily and oil in the lungs is far worse than the original problem. A warm, shallow soak is reasonable for suspected simple constipation and it does no harm, but it is not a treatment for a genuine impaction, which needs imaging and veterinary management.
The feeding-tub question
The standard advice is to move the snake to a separate container for feeding so it does not swallow substrate. It is worth examining, because it has its own failure modes.
What goes wrong with feeding tubs.
Handling a snake immediately before feeding raises stress in an animal that is about to commit to a large meal. Handling it immediately after feeding is worse and is a well-known cause of regurgitation, so the snake has to be moved back either before it settles or much later. The tub also teaches some snakes that being lifted predicts food, which produces exactly the feeding response at the enclosure door that keepers then struggle with.
What most keepers do instead.
Feed in the enclosure, offering prey with tongs rather than dropping it on the bedding, and place it on a tile, a flat stone or a shallow dish so the snake is striking at something clean. This keeps the animal in its own space, avoids the two handling events, and removes almost all of the substrate contact that the tub was meant to prevent.
When a separate container still makes sense.
Snakes housed on very fine dry particles, snakes that thrash and roll extensively while constricting, and situations where multiple snakes share a space and would otherwise compete over a meal.
Moisture, mould and scale rot
The judgement that keepers get wrong most often is the difference between humid and wet.
Substrate should feel like it holds moisture when squeezed but should not release water, and the surface layer should not be soaked. Under that condition it releases humidity into the air steadily.
When it is genuinely wet, two things follow. Mould and bacteria grow in it, particularly in a warm enclosure with poor airflow. And the snake's belly scales stay in constant contact with moisture, which softens them and allows infection. That is scale rot, visible as discoloured, pitted or blistered belly scales, and it needs veterinary treatment as well as a husbandry correction.
The usual causes are misting the whole floor rather than the substrate mass, no ventilation, a water bowl positioned over the heat source so it evaporates continuously, and using a highly absorbent substrate in a species that does not need it.
The reverse failure is a substrate too dry to buffer anything, producing retained sheds, stuck eye caps and constricted tail tips.
Hygiene, mites and quarantine

A bare surface offers no cover and no burrowing, which is why paper-only setups belong in quarantine rather than in permanent housing.
Spot clean often, replace fully less often.
Removing waste and the substrate around it promptly does more for hygiene than periodic complete changes, and it disturbs the animal far less.
Sterility is not the goal in a naturalistic setup.
Bioactive enclosures rely on a soil ecosystem with clean-up organisms, and they work well when set up properly. They are not a shortcut, though: they need the right substrate depth, drainage and moisture, and they are harder to correct once wrong.
Mites live in the substrate.
Snake mites spend much of their life cycle off the animal, in bedding and in crevices. Any mite treatment that does not include stripping to paper, disposing of substrate and treating the enclosure will fail and the infestation will return.
Quarantine on paper.
New arrivals, sick animals and animals under treatment go on paper towel or newspaper. It is not enriching and it is not permanent housing, but it lets you see every dropping, every mite, every regurgitation and every drop of blood, which is exactly what quarantine is for.
What never to do
Do not use cedar, and do not use pine because it was cheaper.
Do not buy calcium sand on the basis that it is digestible.
Do not use reptile carpet long term. Teeth and claws catch in the fibres and it cannot be disinfected properly.
Do not mist the surface instead of moistening the substrate mass.
Do not run high humidity without ventilation. Stagnant, warm, wet air produces respiratory infection.
Do not give oil by mouth for a suspected impaction.
Do not add fresh substrate on top of soiled substrate.
Do not house a new or sick snake on loose bedding while you are trying to observe it.
How deep should the substrate be?
My snake is on aspen and keeps having bad sheds. Is the substrate the problem?

How often should I change all the substrate?
When to get help
Contact a reptile vet the same day if your snake is straining at the vent, has tissue protruding, has regurgitated, or has a firm swelling that has not moved or changed over several days.
Contact a vet if a snake has gone significantly beyond its own normal interval without passing faeces once you have confirmed the warm end temperature is correct and the animal is drinking and hydrated.
Book an appointment for discoloured, pitted or blistered belly scales, for repeated poor sheds despite husbandry changes, or for any respiratory sound or open-mouth breathing, particularly if cedar or pine has been in use.
Bring the substrate type and brand, the depth, how you manage moisture, the warm and cool end temperatures measured with a probe, the humidity reading, the date of the last meal and the date of the last dropping. Substrate problems are usually diagnosed from that list rather than from the examination.
