Snake skin colour changes: scale rot, burns, bruising and normal shedding
Colour change on a snake can be a normal shed cycle, an early bacterial infection of the ventral scales, a thermal burn, mites, retained shed, fungal disease or septicaemia. This guide separates them by location, symmetry and rate of change, stages scale rot from first discolouration to systemic infection, explains why burns look mild for the first days, and lists the husbandry failures behind almost all of it.

Quick answer
Most of what a snake tells you about its health appears on its skin, and colour is the first thing to change. The problem is that several completely different things look similar at a glance: a snake going into shed dulls all over, a snake with early scale rot discolours on the belly, a burned snake discolours in a patch, and a septicaemic snake flushes pink underneath.
The three questions that separate them are where, whether it is symmetrical, and whether it changes over days. Whole-body dulling that clears is normal shedding. Belly-only discolouration that spreads is an infection driven by a wet, dirty or cold enclosure. A pink or red flush across the ventral scales in a snake that is also lethargic is an emergency.
Look at the belly. Almost every serious skin problem in a captive snake starts on the ventral scales.
- Ventral scale discolouration is scale rot until proven otherwise, and it is a husbandry problem before it is a medical one.
- A pink or red flush across the belly in a dull, lethargic snake is a septicaemia sign and an emergency.
- Never use a heat rock, and never run any heat source without a thermostat. Burns are the second commonest cause of skin damage in captive snakes.
- Whole-body dulling with blue eyes that clears after a few days is normal pre-shed.
- Photograph the lesion with something for scale, on the same day each week. Progression is the diagnosis.

An unguarded or unthermostatted heat source will burn a snake, and a snake will lie on it while it happens.
Snakes seek heat by moving towards it and they do not reliably withdraw from a surface that is damaging them, particularly through the ventral scales. Heat rocks, unguarded ceramic emitters, unprotected bulbs and heat mats run without a thermostat all produce deep burns that look mild for the first day or two and then reveal full-thickness damage. Every heat source in a snake enclosure needs a thermostat with a correctly placed probe, and any lamp inside an enclosure needs a physical guard.

What normal colour change looks like
Snakes change colour routinely and most of it is benign.
The shed cycle. A few days to a couple of weeks before shedding, the whole animal dulls, the pattern greys out, and the belly may look pink. The eyes then go milky blue as fluid separates the old spectacle from the new one, hold that appearance for several days, and clear again. A few days after the eyes clear, the snake sheds. Every part of this is symmetrical, affects the whole animal, and resolves. A snake in this phase has reduced vision, is defensive, will usually refuse food, and should not be handled.
Age and genetics. Many species darken, lighten or change pattern contrast as they mature. Some morphs alter markedly in the first years. This is gradual, over months, and affects the whole animal.
Temperature. Several species darken when cool to absorb more heat and lighten when warm. If a snake is consistently darker than it used to be, check the gradient before you check anything else.
After a meal or during digestion. A distended, slightly flushed midsection is normal while a meal moves through.
Scale rot, from the first sign to the last
Scale rot is a general term for bacterial infection of the ventral skin, and it is one of the most common serious problems in captive snakes. It is almost always caused by the environment.
How it starts. The ventral scales are in permanent contact with the substrate. If that substrate is wet, or soiled with urates and faeces, or if the enclosure has no dry area at all, the barrier softens and bacteria that are always present get in. Cool temperatures make it worse in two ways: they keep the substrate damp for longer, and they suppress the snake's own immune response, which in reptiles depends directly on body temperature.
Early. Individual ventral scales look discoloured: yellow, tan, brown, or reddened at the edges. There is no swelling and the snake behaves normally. This is the stage at which fixing the enclosure resolves it, and it is the stage almost everybody misses because it does not look like much.
Established. The discoloured scales lift slightly at their free edges, and fluid-filled blisters appear beneath or between them. Blisters may be clear, yellow or blood-tinged. The snake may start soaking, hiding more, or refusing food.
Late. Blisters rupture and leave raw, weeping ulcers. Scales are lost. Infection tracks into the deeper tissue and then into the bloodstream, at which point the snake becomes lethargic, the belly flushes pink or red, small pinpoint haemorrhages appear, and the animal may gape or breathe with effort. This stage is frequently fatal.
What actually treats it. The environment must change first and completely: dry, clean substrate such as plain paper for the treatment period, spot cleaning every day, a full clean and disinfection of the enclosure and its furniture, and a verified thermal gradient so the snake can reach a proper warm side. On top of that, established cases need veterinary wound care and usually systemic antibiotics chosen on the basis of a swab, because the bacteria involved vary and the wrong drug wastes the time the snake does not have.

Weigh weekly, photograph the belly weekly, and date both. Progression over a fortnight is what tells a vet how fast this is moving.
Burns, and why they look mild at first
Thermal injury is the second big cause of discoloured skin, and it has a characteristic pattern: a discrete area rather than a general change, usually on the ventral surface or on the flank that faced the heat, and often with a shape that matches the heat source.
The dangerous feature is timing. A burn that involves the deeper layers looks like a slightly discoloured patch on day one, blisters on day two or three, and reveals its full extent over the following week as dead tissue separates. Owners who judge the injury on the first day routinely underestimate it.
The causes are consistent. Heat rocks, which should not be used at all. Heat mats run without a thermostat, or with the probe in the wrong place. Mats placed under thick substrate that the snake then burrows beneath, so the animal lies directly against the hottest surface. Unguarded bulbs and ceramic emitters inside the enclosure, which snakes climb onto. Faulty thermostats, which is why a separate thermometer that you actually read matters.
A burned snake needs veterinary treatment. Burns are painful, they lose fluid, and they become infected. Do not apply human burn creams, oils, butter, honey preparations or antiseptics before the animal is seen.
The other things that change skin colour
Mites. Small dark specks that move, concentrating around the eyes, under the chin, in the heat pits of pythons and boas, and in the folds of the vent. Fine grey debris in the water bowl is the classic sign, along with a snake that soaks constantly and sheds badly. Mites also cause raised scales and pinpoint marks. Treatment must cover the enclosure, its contents and the room, not just the animal, and product choice matters because some over-the-counter treatments are hazardous to snakes.
Retained shed. Patches of dull, tight, opaque skin left behind after an incomplete shed, most often over the eyes as retained spectacles and around the tail tip. A retained ring at the tail acts as a tourniquet and causes tissue death. Raise humidity, provide a humid hide and a rough surface to rub against, and have anything on the eyes removed by a vet rather than picking at it.
Fungal disease. Crusts, raised nodules, thickened or roughened scales, particularly around the head and jaw. This group of conditions cannot be distinguished from bacterial disease by appearance, needs laboratory diagnosis, and does not respond to antibacterial treatment.
Abscesses. A firm, discrete swelling under the scales, often following a bite from prey, a scratch, or an injection. Reptile pus is solid rather than liquid, so these do not drain like a mammalian abscess and generally need surgical removal.
Wear and abrasion. Rubbed, pale or missing scales on the snout and chin from persistent nose rubbing against glass or mesh, and worn ventral scales from rough substrate. These indicate an enclosure problem, usually lack of cover or an animal trying to escape.

Healthy scales are smooth, glossy and flat, with clean edges and a clear spectacle over the eye.
Where the usual advice fails
"Soak it in dilute antiseptic and it will clear up."
Antiseptic soaks have a place in wound management under veterinary direction, but used alone they treat the surface of an infection whose cause is still in the enclosure. They also make a swab culture harder to interpret, which delays the choice of an effective antibiotic. Fix the enclosure the same day, and get a diagnosis before you medicate.
"Just dry it out and it will heal."
Drying the enclosure is essential and it is not sufficient once blisters or ulcers have formed, because at that point bacteria are already below the skin surface.
"Peel off the retained shed."
Pulling shed off removes living scale and creates the exact skin damage that leads to infection. Humidity, a humid hide and a rough surface do it safely; a vet does the eyes.
"Raise the humidity, it helps everything."
Humidity that is right for a rainforest species is wrong for an arid one, and blanket high humidity with poor ventilation is a leading cause of both scale rot and respiratory infection. What every species needs is the right humidity with airflow, and a dry area to lie on.
"The heat mat is fine, I can touch it and it is only warm."
Your hand samples the surface for a second. A snake lies on it for hours, and burrowing species get underneath the substrate to the hottest point. Measure with a thermometer at the surface, use a thermostat, and check the probe has not moved.
What never to do
Do not burst blisters. They are a barrier, and opening them introduces infection into deeper tissue.
Do not apply human antibiotic creams, burn creams, petroleum jelly, oils, tea tree or any essential oil. Several are directly toxic to reptiles, and all of them interfere with diagnosis.
Do not increase the temperature dramatically to help the snake fight infection. Raise it to the correct range for the species, verified with a thermometer, and no higher; overheating causes its own emergency.
Do not keep a sick snake on damp bedding, moss or bark. Plain paper allows you to see output, keeps the belly dry, and can be changed daily.
Do not treat mites with products sold for dogs, cats or household pest control unless a reptile vet has specified them. Several are neurotoxic to snakes.
Do not skip quarantine for a new animal. Mites and infectious disease enter collections almost exclusively this way.
Do not wait for the snake to look unwell. By the time a snake with skin infection is visibly lethargic, the infection is usually systemic.

When to get help
Go immediately for a pink or red flush across the belly in a dull snake, open or weeping ulcers, a burn, gaping or laboured breathing, or a snake that cannot right itself.
Book within the week for blisters, lifted scale edges, discoloured ventral scales that have not improved after the enclosure was corrected, crusts or nodules anywhere, retained spectacles, a tight ring of retained shed at the tail, or mites.
Book a routine appointment for repeated incomplete sheds, persistent nose rubbing, or a snake that has changed colour progressively over months without a shed cycle explaining it.
Bring dated ventral photographs, the weight record, the substrate type and how often it is changed, the heat source and whether it is thermostatted, measured temperatures at both ends of the gradient taken at surface level, humidity readings, the date of the last shed and whether it was complete, the feeding record, and details of any animal added to the collection in the last few months.

A dry belly, a clean gradient and complete sheds in one piece are what healthy husbandry looks like from the outside.
