Keeping a snake record: weights, feeds, sheds, and what the log catches first
A snake in the early stage of most illnesses looks exactly like a healthy snake, because a healthy snake spends most of its life motionless. The record replaces the behaviour you cannot read: weight taken at the same point in the feeding cycle, prey weight rather than prey count, shed and defecation intervals, and the enclosure's real temperatures and humidity. Why a snake needs a record and a dog does not
There is no behaviour to read.
A ball python that has spent four days in its hide has done exactly what a ball python does. So has one with a developing respiratory infection. The behavioural signal that owners of mammals rely on simply does not exist here, and waiting for one means waiting until the animal is very unwell.
Feeding is an event, not a habit.
A snake may eat once a week or once a month. "Eating well" therefore describes two to four data points in a month. Any judgement about appetite is a judgement about a very small sample, and it needs the history around it to mean anything.
Change happens over months.
A snake can lose meaningful body condition across a season without any single week looking wrong. Nobody sees a gradual change in an animal they look at every day. A column of weights does.
The enclosure drifts, silently.
Bulbs age. Thermostat probes get knocked or buried under substrate. Rooms warm in summer and cool in winter. Central heating collapses indoor humidity from October. None of these announces itself, and all of them are visible immediately in a logged number.
This is where the heat question actually lives. By the time a snake is showing clear signs of overheating it is an emergency. A hot-end maximum that has climbed steadily over three weeks is the same problem, caught while it is still a maintenance job.
What to log, and why each entry earns its place
Weight

Tare a tub on a flat digital scale, put the snake in it, and record the grams. The tub matters more than the scale: a snake that can move freely will not settle.

Take it at the same point in the feeding cycle every time, and the sensible point is immediately before a feed. A snake that has just eaten is carrying the prey, and a snake mid-digestion is carrying part of it, so comparing across those states produces a graph that looks like disease and is not.
Monthly is enough for an adult. Hatchlings and growing juveniles benefit from fortnightly, because growth rate is the signal in a young snake.
What it catches: parasitism, kidney disease, mouth disease that makes feeding painful, cryptosporidiosis, chronic underfeeding, and equally the steady climb of a snake that is being fed too generously.
Feeds
Date, prey species, prey weight in grams, accepted or refused, how it was taken, and whether anything came back up.
Prey weight matters far more than prey count. A large mouse and a small mouse differ substantially, and "one mouse a week" describes a range of feeding regimes rather than one.
Record refusals with the same care as feeds. A refusal is not a failure to record; it is the data.
Record regurgitations with the date and the interval since the meal. A regurgitation within a day usually means prey too large, handling too soon, or temperature too low. Regurgitations that keep recurring across months point at disease, and the dates are what make the pattern visible.
Sheds
Date the snake goes opaque or blue, date it clears, date it sheds, and whether the shed came off in one piece with both eye caps attached.
Logging the opaque phase is practical as well as diagnostic. It predicts a refusal, and it marks a period when the snake should be left alone, since vision is poor and defensiveness is higher.
What it catches: humidity and hydration problems, mites, skin disease, growth rate in a juvenile, and the scarring from an old injury that keeps shedding badly.
An adult shedding much more often than its own established pattern is worth investigating, either as skin disease or as a consequence of heavy feeding.
Defecations and urates
Date, and a note on appearance.
In a species that eats fortnightly, a missed defecation is a real signal rather than a triviality. Lengthening intervals point at dehydration, cool temperatures, or a developing impaction, and impaction has a long silent phase in which it is still easy to resolve.
Urates that are consistently hard, yellow, or scant point at dehydration or kidney disease, and both are far more treatable early.
Temperature and humidity

Log what the enclosure actually is, not what it is set to. Humidity in particular drifts with the season and with the heating in the room.
Hot-end surface, cool-end surface, ambient, and humidity. Measured with a probe or an infrared thermometer, not with a dial gauge stuck to the glass.
Reset a minimum and maximum record daily. The dangerous readings happen at four in the morning and at two in the afternoon, not when you happen to look.
Note the room as well as the enclosure. A snake in a south-facing room in summer, or in a room whose radiator comes on in October, is in a different enclosure from the one you set up in March.
Behaviour and interventions
Short notes, dated. Where the snake spends its time. Glass surfing, nose rubbing, prolonged soaking, a change in defensiveness. Substrate changes, new decor, a new bulb, a vet visit, a medication, a house move, building work in the room.
The value of this column is that it explains the others. A refusal in the week you changed the substrate is a different fact from a refusal in a stable month.
Reading the log

What the log describes in numbers, this describes in appearance: clear eye, smooth scales with no lifted edges, no retained shed.
A log nobody reads is a diary. These are the patterns worth looking for.
Weight falling across three or more weigh-ins with normal feeding.
Something is consuming resources or preventing absorption. Parasites, renal disease, chronic infection and cryptosporidiosis all sit here. This is an appointment, not a wait.
Weight steady, refusals rising.
Look at the environment first. Temperature drift, a change in the room, a new substrate smell, disturbance, or the seasonal cycle. Environmental causes outnumber medical ones here by a large margin.
Weight rising steadily with no growth in length.
Overfeeding. Common in colubrids, and the fat is largely internal, so the snake does not look obese until it is markedly so.
Sheds deteriorating.
Humidity and hydration. Check the water bowl is large enough to soak in, check the humid hide, check the substrate, and check what your central heating has done to the room since autumn.
Defecation intervals lengthening.
Hydration, temperature, or impaction. Substrate that can be ingested, and cool temperatures that slow the gut, are the two commonest contributors.
Prolonged soaking.
Mites are the first thing to rule out, and they are easy to miss on a dark snake. Look in the water bowl for tiny dark specks, and under the chin and around the eyes. After mites, consider a hot end that is too hot, and a shed that is coming.
Hot-end maximum climbing week on week.
The thermostat or its probe. Check the probe has not been buried, moved, or pushed against the heat source. This is the entry that prevents a hyperthermia emergency rather than treating one.
Two or more regurgitations.
Stop feeding and see a vet. A single regurgitation has ordinary explanations. A pattern does not, and continuing to feed a snake that is regurgitating makes the underlying problem worse.
The look-over that goes with the numbers
Support the body, look at the head, and let the snake move through your hands. Two minutes, once a month, at the same time as the weigh-in.
The record does not replace handling the animal. Do both, at the same time, so neither is skipped.
Head and mouth.
Look for swelling along the jaw line, asymmetry, discharge from the nostrils, bubbles at the mouth or nose, and gaping. Do not force the mouth open. Any bubbling, any gape held open, or any audible breathing needs a vet.
Eyes.

Clear, evenly domed spectacles with no wrinkling or retained caps. A dull, uneven or sunken eye between sheds is worth logging and mentioning.

Skin and scales.
Run the body through your hands and look at the underside. You are looking for lifted or discoloured belly scales, which is where scale rot starts, for retained shed in rings around the tail, for mites, and for lumps.
Body condition.
A healthy snake is rounded but not triangular in cross section, with no prominent spine and no obvious fat pads bulging the sides. Log an impression alongside the weight, because the two together tell you whether a weight change is muscle, fat or fluid.
Vent.
Clean, closed, no swelling or protruding tissue.
What changes by snake
Hatchlings and juveniles.
Weigh fortnightly. Growth rate is the thing being monitored, and a growing snake that stops growing has told you something a monthly weight would blur.
Ball pythons.
Prolonged voluntary fasting is characteristic, particularly in mature males and through the cooler months. The log is what tells you whether a three-month refusal is normal for this individual, because it will show that last year's was too, at the same time, with no weight loss.
Boas and other boids.
Regurgitation history matters more here, because of the specific diseases that present that way, and a quarantine log for any new arrival protects the whole collection.
Corn snakes, kingsnakes and other colubrids.
They feed more predictably, so a refusal carries more weight. Obesity is the commoner problem, so the weight trend usually needs watching upwards rather than downwards.
Arboreal species.
Humidity is the entry that matters most, and weighing is harder, so many keepers weigh with the perch and subtract. Whichever method you use, use the same one every time.
Species that brumate.
Log the cooling schedule itself: dates, target temperatures and the last feed before cooling. This is the record that makes the next brumation safer.
Gravid or follicular females.
Weight rises, appetite changes dramatically, and behaviour changes. None of it is disease, and a log with a note in the behaviour column stops it being misread as one.
How to keep a log you will actually keep
What never to do
Do not compare a post-feed weight with a pre-feed weight.
Do not handle a snake for a weigh-in during the opaque shed phase, or within about forty-eight hours of a meal.
Do not record "ate normally". Record the prey weight.
Do not trust a stick-on dial thermometer, or a hygrometer whose accuracy you have never checked.
Do not log an air temperature as a surface temperature.
Do not backfill the log from memory. Leave the gap.
Do not interpret a single refusal, a single regurgitation or a single bad shed. Interpret the pattern.
Do not let the log replace looking at and handling the animal.
Do not throw the log away when the snake changes hands.

When to get help

Clear eye, full smooth body, no retained shed and no lifted belly scales. A log that stays flat and a snake that looks like this is the outcome the routine is for.
Go immediately for open-mouth breathing, bubbling or discharge at the mouth or nostrils, an inability to right itself, stargazing or other neurological signs, tissue protruding from the vent, or collapse.
Book an appointment for a weight trend that has fallen across three or more weigh-ins, for two or more regurgitations, for a lengthening defecation interval with hard or yellow urates, for repeated poor sheds, for mites, and for lifted or discoloured belly scales.
Bring the log. This matters more in snakes than in almost any other pet, because a physical examination of a snake yields comparatively little and the history yields a great deal.

Take the snake in a secure lined container, and take the record with it. The two together are what the appointment is built on.
Bring these alongside it: your hot end, cool end and humidity readings and what you measured them with, the prey type and where it is sourced from, the substrate, the dates of the last shed and last defecation, and any recent change to the enclosure or the room.
Expect the vet to want the numbers before the animal. Expect a faecal examination for parasites, and expect a conversation about husbandry that goes further than it would for a mammal, because in reptiles the enclosure is a substantial part of the clinical picture rather than background information.
Ask what to add to the log for this specific problem, and how often. A record built around the question being asked is worth far more at the recheck than a general one.
