Snake Overheating: Recognising Hyperthermia and the Safe Cool-Down Order

Why heat is more dangerous for a snake than for a mammal
A mammal in a hot room raises its breathing rate, sweats or pants, and dumps heat actively. A snake has none of these mechanisms in any meaningful capacity.
Its body temperature simply follows the environment. The only behavioural tool available is to move somewhere cooler, and the only cooling available is losing heat to a cooler surface or to evaporation from the respiratory tract.
That is why the design of the enclosure matters more than the maximum temperature. A hot basking zone is harmless if the animal can leave it. The same temperature applied across the whole enclosure is lethal.
Enzymes and cell membranes fail above the species range, and the damage is cumulative. This is also why a snake can look recovered after cooling and then deteriorate over the following days from kidney, liver, or neurological injury.
The cool-down order
Work through these in sequence. The order matters more than the speed.
1. Remove the heat.
Turn off every heat mat, ceramic emitter, basking lamp, and heat cable. Move the enclosure or the animal out of direct sun.
2. Move the snake to a cooler, shaded, quiet space.
A ventilated container in a cool room, out of sunlight, with no heating. Keep handling to the minimum needed.

Have a ventilated carrier, clean towels, and a way to contact your reptile vet ready before you need them.
3. Cool gradually, using water at cool room temperature.
A shallow container of cool, not cold, water that the snake can rest in with its head clear. Alternatively, lay a damp cool towel loosely over the body. Aim to bring the animal back toward the cool end of its normal species range.
4. Stop cooling once the animal is in range.
Overshooting into cold causes a second problem. Cooling below the species range suppresses immune function and slows recovery.
5. Offer water, never force it.
A snake able to drink may do so. Never pour water into the mouth of a snake that is not fully alert. Aspiration is a real risk.
6. Contact a reptile veterinarian the same day.
Fluid support and monitoring for delayed organ damage need to be done by a vet. This step is not optional even if the snake looks normal again.
What causes it, and what to check afterwards
Thermostat failure is the most common cause. A failed thermostat leaves a heat source at full output with nothing limiting it.
Direct sunlight through a window is the second. Glass enclosures in sun behave like greenhouses, and the sun moves across a room during the day.
Transport is the third. A snake in a tub inside a car, or left in a bag in a warm room, has no cool end at all.
Unguarded heat sources cause contact burns rather than whole-body overheating. Heat mats without a thermostat, exposed ceramic emitters, and hot rocks are the usual culprits. Snakes do not reliably move away from a surface that is burning them.

Recovery means a return to normal posture, movement, and the righting reflex, confirmed by a vet rather than assumed.
The routine that prevents it

Do not use ice, ice packs, iced water, or a fridge or freezer.
Do not run cold water over the snake. Rapid surface cooling is dangerous and does not cool the core.
Do not use fans directed at a wet snake to speed things up. Uncontrolled evaporative cooling can overshoot quickly.
Do not give any medication, supplement, or electrolyte product without veterinary direction.
Do not skip the vet because the snake seems fine. Delayed deterioration after heat injury is well recognised, and early fluid support materially changes the outcome.
Do not put the snake straight back into the same enclosure. Find the fault first.

When to get help
Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian the same day for any suspected overheating, any heat exposure in a vehicle or sunlit room, and any burn to the scales.
Go immediately, without waiting to finish cooling, if the snake cannot right itself, is twitching or rigid, or is unresponsive. Cool gently on the way.
Bring the species and age, how long the exposure lasted, the temperatures you measured, what cooling you did and for how long, and photographs of any skin damage.
Then rebuild the setup before the snake goes back. Nearly every case of overheating is a piece of equipment doing exactly what it was set up to do, without anything to stop it.
