Snake lethargy: normal stillness versus a sick snake, age by age
Snakes have no internal thermostat, so they cannot run a fever and there is no useful temperature to take at home. What they do have is behavioural fever, which means a sick snake seeks heat, so a snake refusing its warm end is a worse sign than one glued to it. Stillness is a snake's normal state. What separates resting from ill is muscle tone, position and weight, not activity level.
Snakes do not run a fever. They have no internal thermostat to raise, so their body temperature is whatever their environment gives them. There is no forehead to feel and no useful temperature to take at home.
That inverts the usual logic. In a mammal, illness raises temperature. In a snake, illness makes the animal seek heat, so a snake that has abandoned its warm end and is lying on the cool side is a much worse sign than one glued to the basking spot.
The other half of the problem is that a healthy snake is inactive by design. Ambush predators spend most of their lives motionless, and owners who watch only in the evening see a fraction of what the animal does.

Why there is no fever to find
A mammal generates heat internally and defends a target temperature, which is why a raised reading means something. A snake produces almost no metabolic heat and has no target to defend. Its temperature is set by the surfaces and air around it, and it manages that by moving.
That means several familiar ideas simply do not transfer. You cannot judge a snake's temperature by touch, because a snake feels cool to a warm human hand at any temperature. There is no reading you can take at home that tells you anything about illness. And a snake that feels cold might be perfectly well in a correctly cool part of its gradient.
The measurement that matters is of the enclosure, not the animal. An infrared thermometer reads the surface the snake is actually lying on, which is the number that determines its body temperature. Air temperature on a dial on the glass is close to meaningless by comparison.
What reptiles do have is behavioural fever. Faced with infection, they move to warmer areas and hold a higher body temperature, because the immune response works better there. This is why the position of the snake in its gradient is more informative than its activity level, and why the direction of that movement matters so much: toward heat is expected in illness, away from heat is not.
What normal inactivity looks like
Most pet snakes are ambush predators or low-energy foragers with extremely economical metabolisms. Long periods of complete stillness are not a symptom, they are the design.
By time of day.
Many commonly kept species are crepuscular or nocturnal. An owner who checks in the evening sees a snake that has not moved all day and concludes it never moves. Placing a camera, or simply checking at different hours over a week, usually resolves this without any veterinary involvement.
After a meal.
Digestion is metabolically expensive and a fed snake stays put, often for days, usually on the warm end. This is normal and the correct response is to leave it alone, since handling a recently fed snake risks regurgitation.
Pre-shed.
The skin dulls, the eyes go cloudy or blue, and vision drops. Snakes in this phase hide, refuse food, become more defensive and move very little. It is one of the commonest reasons owners think their snake has become ill.
Season.
Temperate species slow markedly in winter, and any snake in a room that cools will follow the room. Male snakes of many species become restless and go off food during the breeding season, then settle again.
Species.
There is a wide range. A ball python may spend almost all of its time in one hide and be entirely healthy. A colubrid such as a corn snake or a king snake is normally more visibly active, and a comparable degree of stillness in one of those is a bigger change.
The practical conclusion is that activity has to be judged against that individual's own baseline rather than against an idea of what a snake should do. That is why a record is worth more than an impression.
What changes with age
Neonates and hatchlings.
Naturally secretive, defensive, and rarely visible. They also carry almost no reserve, cool faster because of their small mass, and dehydrate faster. A pattern of inactivity and fasting that would be unremarkable in an adult becomes significant in a hatchling within days rather than weeks. Weigh them more often.
Juveniles.
The most active stage, growing steadily and feeding frequently. A juvenile that becomes still and stops feeding represents a bigger departure from normal than the same change in an adult, and it should be taken more seriously.
Adults.
Settled patterns with seasonal variation. Males roam and fast during the breeding season. Females may be gravid, which produces a long fast, heat-seeking and a swollen mid-body, and that has its own set of risks. In adults the useful question is not how much the snake moves but whether the pattern has changed.
Older snakes.
Gradual reduction in activity, slower digestion, longer intervals between feeds, and sheds that come less cleanly. Slower is expected with age. Weakness is not, and neither is losing weight. In older animals the differential shifts toward kidney disease, tumours and long-standing husbandry damage, so a change in an old snake deserves more investigation rather than less.
The check order when a snake seems flat

A monthly weight in a notebook resolves more of these questions than any observation of behaviour.
One: measure the enclosure.
Surface temperature at the warm end, at the cool end, and inside the hides, using an infrared thermometer. Check the thermostat is working and that its probe is where it should be. A dislodged probe is one of the most common causes of a suddenly flat snake, and it is free to fix.
Two: note where the snake is.
Warm end, hiding, good tone, and it has eaten recently or is pre-shed. That is normal. Cool end, persistently, refusing to move when the warm end is available, is not.
Three: check the shed cycle.
Dull skin and opaque eyes explain a great deal of temporary inactivity.
Four: check the last feed.
Days of stillness after a meal is digestion.
Five: check the season and the room.
Winter, a cooler room, a shorter photoperiod, or a heating system that behaves differently at night.
Six: weigh, and compare against the log.
This is the point at which the question usually becomes answerable. A still snake holding its weight is resting. A still snake losing weight is ill.
Seven: assess tone and reflexes.
Handled gently, a healthy snake grips, supports its own body, moves with an even wave through its length, tongue-flicks and rights itself immediately if gently rolled. A snake that hangs limply, that cannot grip, that has patchy or kinked muscle tone, or that fails to right itself, needs a vet the same day regardless of everything else.
What genuine lethargy turns out to be
A cold enclosure.
By far the commonest, and the one to exclude before anything else.
Overheating.
The reverse presentation. The snake sits at the cool end, may gape, and looks flat. It is trying to escape heat rather than seek it, and it is an emergency.
Respiratory infection.
Open-mouth breathing, mucus or bubbles at the nostrils or in the mouth, clicking or wheezing, and a head held raised. Snakes are silent when healthy, so any sound is significant.
Dehydration.
Skin that stays wrinkled or tented, sunken eyes, a dry or tacky mouth, thick chalky urates, and a history of bad sheds.
Parasites.
A heavy mite burden causes anaemia, constant soaking and lethargy, and the mites are visible in the water bowl and around the eyes and chin. Internal parasites cause weight loss and poor condition.
Septicaemia.
Pink or red flushing and pinpoint haemorrhages across the belly scales, with a dull, weak snake. An emergency.
Neurological disease.
Stargazing, corkscrewing, loss of the righting reflex, or an inability to track. This is a distinct presentation with its own causes and needs specific assessment.
Obstruction or impaction.
No defecation, a firm swelling, straining, and a snake that has been on loose substrate or has eaten oversized prey.
Reproductive activity or disease in a female.
A long fast with heat-seeking and a swollen mid-body may be a normal gravid female or a female with retained follicles or eggs.
Recent brumation.
A snake coming out of a cooling period is slow and needs to be warmed and rehydrated gradually before being judged.
Toxin exposure.
Frequently missed. Aerosol sprays, scented plug-in diffusers, essential oils, oven cleaners, paint fumes and household pest control all reach an enclosure in the same room. Ask what has been used nearby in the last week.
Kidney disease.
More common in older snakes, and often first noticed as thick urates, dehydration and gradual weight loss.
The routine that answers these questions in advance

Even, firm tone through the whole body, a grip that holds, and an immediate righting response. This is what you are comparing against.
Weigh monthly, more often for hatchlings and for any snake being watched, and write it down. Weight is the only measure in this article that is objective, and it is what turns a vague worry into a decision.
Record the feed dates, the shed dates and the defecation dates in the same place. Almost every question a vet asks about a lethargic snake is answered from those three columns.
Note where the snake sits each time you look, even in a single word. Patterns emerge that no one notices in the moment.
Measure the gradient with an infrared thermometer on a schedule rather than only when something is wrong, so that you know what normal looks like on your equipment.
Handle briefly and regularly enough that you know how the snake normally feels, because loss of tone is only detectable against a remembered baseline.
What never to do
Do not try to take a snake's temperature or judge it by touch. It tells you about the room, not the animal.
Do not warm a flat snake with a hot water bottle, a heat pad against the body, a hair dryer, or direct sun. Uncontrolled heat causes burns in an animal that may not move away.
Do not handle a snake that is pre-shed, has eaten recently, or is genuinely weak. The first two cause stress and regurgitation, and the third makes assessment harder.
Do not assume inactivity is illness in a species that is naturally inactive, and do not assume it is normal in a species that is not.
Do not treat suspected parasites, respiratory infection or dehydration with over-the-counter reptile products while waiting. It delays diagnosis and some products are harmful.
Do not use scented sprays, diffusers, essential oils or household insecticides in the room with the enclosure.
Do not brumate a snake that is already flat, underweight, or that has not been health checked.
Do not judge a snake by how much of it you see. Judge it by weight, tone and position.

A correct gradient with hides at both ends is what lets a snake show you where it wants to be.
Go immediately for a snake that is limp, cannot grip, cannot right itself, is gaping or breathing with an open mouth, has pink or red flushing across the belly scales, or is unresponsive.
Go the same day for a snake that refuses to use its warm end, for any sound on breathing, for mucus or bubbles at the nostrils, or for a snake that has been overheated.
Book within the week for weight loss across the log with normal husbandry, for repeated bad sheds, for thick chalky urates, for a change in activity pattern that persists after the temperatures have been corrected, or for an older snake that has become noticeably slower.
Bring with you: the species and age, the weight record, the feed, shed and defecation dates, measured surface temperatures at the warm end, cool end and inside the hides, the humidity, the substrate, where the snake has been choosing to sit, and anything sprayed, diffused or applied in that room recently.
