The chilled snake: heater and power failure, safe rewarming, and the infection that follows
A snake has no way to make its own heat, so a failed thermostat or a winter power cut stops its digestion and switches off its immune system. This guide covers why a recently fed snake is the emergency in the room, the stages of chilling including the snake that looks dead and is not, safe improvised heat and the burns caused by the usual improvisations, why a warm bath is the wrong method, and the respiratory infection that appears one to three weeks later.

Quick answer
The kit that matters for a heating failure is mostly insulation, a thermometer and a plan. Assemble it before the night the power goes off, not during it.
A snake does not shiver, does not seek out a blanket, and gives almost no outward sign that it is in trouble until the trouble is already serious. It simply slows down.
Everything a snake's body does, digestion, immune defence, wound healing and the processing of medicines, runs at a speed set by its body temperature. Take the heat away and all of it stops, in that order of visibility.
- A snake with prey in its stomach when the heat fails is the animal at greatest risk, because undigested prey decomposes inside it.
- Chilling suppresses the reptile immune system directly, which is why respiratory infection follows a cold spell so reliably a week or two later.
- Rewarm gradually. Rapid or contact heat causes burns, because snakes do not reliably move away from something that is damaging them.
- A very cold snake can look dead and not be dead. Rewarm before concluding anything.
- Antibiotics do very little in a reptile kept below its correct temperature. Heat is the first treatment, not the comfort measure.

Never place a chilled snake directly on a heat mat, a radiator, a hot water bottle without thick insulation, or a chemical hand warmer against the skin.
Snakes lack a reliable withdrawal reflex from heat applied to the body, particularly when they are cold and sluggish. Severe full-thickness burns from improvised heat during a power cut are a recognised way that a survivable situation becomes a months-long wound.

Why cold does what it does
A snake runs at the temperature of its surroundings.
Ectothermy is not a weakness so much as a different strategy. A snake's whole physiology assumes it can choose its temperature by moving between warm and cool places, which is what the thermal gradient in a well-designed enclosure provides.
Remove the warm end and the snake has no way to generate heat internally. Its body temperature falls to whatever the room is, and every biochemical process in it slows in proportion.
Digestion stops first, and that is the dangerous part.
Digesting a rodent is a large metabolic undertaking that only proceeds above a certain body temperature. Below it, the process halts.
The prey does not halt with it. Bacteria in the gut and in the prey carcass continue to work at lower temperatures than the snake's digestive enzymes do, so the meal putrefies inside the stomach. The snake will usually regurgitate it, which is unpleasant but is the better outcome. The alternative is that the decomposing mass stays in and the animal becomes systemically ill.
This is why the first question after a heating failure is when the snake last ate, and why a snake that has just eaten is the emergency in the room even if it looks fine.
Immunity is temperature-dependent.
Reptile immune function, both the cellular response and the production of antibodies, works properly only within the species' preferred temperature range. A chilled snake is functionally immunosuppressed for as long as it is cold, and for some time afterwards.
Bacteria that live harmlessly in the mouth and respiratory tract take the opportunity. That is the mechanism behind the pattern every experienced keeper recognises: the snake gets through the cold week apparently fine, and then develops a respiratory infection a fortnight later.
Species origin decides how much margin you have.
A corn snake, a milk snake or a hognose comes from a temperate climate where its wild relatives spend part of the year underground at low temperatures. These animals have real tolerance for cooling, provided their gut is empty.
A ball python from West Africa, a green tree python from New Guinea, a boa from Central or South America, or any species from lowland tropical forest, has no such adaptation. For these, a cold room is not an inconvenience.
Know which category your animal is in and write the species' published temperature range on a card taped to the enclosure. In a power cut at eleven at night, nobody wants to be searching the internet on a phone with a dying battery.
Brumation is not what is happening to your ball python.
Brumation is a planned, gradual cool-down of a temperate species, entered on an empty gut, with water available, at a controlled temperature, and reversed gradually. It is a normal part of the year for some species and is sometimes used deliberately before breeding.
An unplanned drop in temperature in a tropical snake that ate last Tuesday is not brumation. The word gets used as reassurance in exactly the situations where reassurance is wrong.
What a chilled snake looks like, stage by stage
Early.
Reduced movement. Tongue flicking becomes slower and less frequent. The snake stays where it is rather than exploring. Refusal of food, which is often the first thing an owner notices because it is the only interaction on the calendar.
Muscle tone is still good and the snake responds normally to being touched or lifted.
Established.
Noticeably limp. Slow or absent response to gentle handling. Difficulty righting itself if it is gently turned onto its back, which is a useful, low-stress check.
Breathing becomes shallow and infrequent, which is normal at low temperature and is not in itself a reason to panic.
Severe.
Unresponsive, cold to the touch through its whole length, with no visible breathing. At this point the snake may look dead.
It very often is not. Reptile metabolism at low temperature can be slow enough that heartbeat and respiration are undetectable without equipment. Rewarm the animal gradually over several hours before concluding anything, and let a vet make that call rather than making it yourself.
Delayed, one to three weeks later.
This is the stage most owners never connect to the cold week, and it is the one that kills.
Open-mouth breathing. A wheeze, a click, or a faint whistling with each breath. Bubbles or froth at the nostrils or at the glottis in the floor of the mouth. The head and neck held raised, sometimes at an odd angle, because that posture opens the airway. Reduced appetite, a poor shed, and a snake that spends its time at the warm end and will not move.
Mouth rot may appear at the same time: redness, swelling, a cheesy yellow material along the gum line, or a mouth the snake cannot close properly.
The first hour when the heat fails
Safe improvised heat, in order of preference.
Your own body is the safest heat source available. A small or medium snake in a secure cloth snake bag, held inside your clothing against your torso, warms at a controlled rate and cannot be burned, because your skin will hurt long before the snake is damaged. This is a genuinely good technique and it is available to everyone.
A car with the engine running and the heater on, in the open air, warms a transport tub effectively. Never run an engine in an attached or closed garage.
Hot water bottles are usable if they are wrapped in several layers of towel, placed beside or under the outside of the tub rather than against the snake, and refreshed as they cool. Check the surface temperature with the back of your hand, and if it is uncomfortable to hold it is too hot.
Chemical hand warmers reach a surface temperature that will burn a reptile. They can be used inside the outer insulation of a transport box, well away from the animal, never in contact with it.
What not to use.
Do not put the snake on a radiator, in an oven, in front of a fan heater, or against a hot water pipe.
Do not use unvented fuel-burning heaters, camping stoves or charcoal in a closed room. Carbon monoxide kills the humans as well as the animals, and it is a common cause of death during winter power failures.
Do not soak a cold snake in warm water. Water conducts heat away from the body far faster than air does, so a bath that is even slightly too cool actively chills the animal, and a weak snake can drown in a very small depth. A wet snake also loses heat faster once it comes out.
Rewarm over hours, not minutes.
Aim to bring the animal back up gradually. There is no prize for speed, and rapid rewarming stresses an already compromised animal.
When the power comes back

Transport tub, towels and clean bowls ready to go. A snake that needs to travel to a warm house or a clinic should not also be waiting for someone to find a container.
Check the thermostat before you trust it.
Thermostats fail. Some fail off, which is how you got here. Some fail stuck on, in which case the heat mat has been at full power, and a snake returning to warmth walks onto a burn hazard.
Verify with an independent thermometer before the snake goes back in, and check the probe has not been dislodged or buried in substrate.
Do not feed on the old schedule.
Give the snake several days at correct temperature and normal behaviour before offering anything, and when you do, offer a smaller item than usual. A gut that has been cold does not resume at full capacity.
Expect a regurgitation if the snake was fed shortly before.
If it happens, do not offer food again quickly. The oesophagus and stomach need time, and re-feeding too soon is the classic way a single regurgitation becomes a repeating cycle. Ask your vet how long to wait for your species and the size of the meal involved.
Watch the mouth and the breathing for a month.

A brief oral check. Look for stringy mucus, redness along the gum line, or a cheesy yellow film. Do not force a mouth open with anything hard, and keep the check to a few seconds.
The delayed respiratory infection is the real cost of a cold spell. Look at the nostrils for bubbles, listen close to the head for clicks or a wheeze, and note whether the snake is holding its head up more than usual.
The look-alikes: not every sluggish snake is cold

The distinguishing question in almost all of these is what the thermometer says at the level of the snake. Measure before you theorise.
Preventing the next one
Two thermostats, not one.
Experienced keepers run a second thermostat as a high-limit cut-off in series with the first, set slightly above the target. If the primary sticks on, the second one cuts the power before the animal is cooked. This is the single most cost-effective piece of equipment in reptile keeping.
Alarms.
A maximum and minimum thermometer tells you what happened while you were out. A networked temperature sensor that sends an alert to a phone tells you while it is happening. In a cold climate, that difference is worth more than any other upgrade.
Insulation, planned in advance.
Foam board cut to the enclosure sides, a spare duvet, and a rigid insulated cool box big enough to take a transport tub. All cheap, all useless if you have to go and buy them in a storm.
A power plan.
Know whether your car can run an inverter, know which friend or relative has a different electricity supply, and know your reptile vet's out-of-hours arrangement. Store the number in your phone now.
Placement.
An enclosure against an external wall, under a window, or in a conservatory or garage loses heat fastest and is the first to become dangerous. An interior wall in a room the household actually heats is worth more than any amount of equipment.
Feeding and the weather.
In a region with predictable winter storms and grid failures, some keepers deliberately avoid feeding immediately before a forecast severe weather event. A snake with an empty gut is a snake with a much larger margin.
What the vet will do, and what to bring

A snake moving purposefully with good muscle tone and a raised, steady head. This is the behaviour you are aiming to get back, and the benchmark for judging recovery.
Bring:
- The species, the age and the weight
- The date and size of the last meal, and whether it was regurgitated
- How cold it got, for how long, and how you know
- The temperature readings since, taken at the level of the snake
- A photograph of the enclosure, the heat source and where the thermostat probe sits
- Photographs of the mouth and nostrils if there is any discharge
Expect a full physical examination, an oral examination, and observation of breathing. Radiographs show pneumonia and can reveal retained prey. A wash of the trachea or lung, sampled and cultured, identifies the organism and is what allows a targeted antibiotic rather than a guess.
Treatment starts with housing the snake at the top of its correct temperature range, because antibiotic activity and immune function both depend on it. Fluids are given under the skin or into the body cavity, nebulisation is sometimes used for respiratory disease, and antibiotics are chosen on culture where the animal is stable enough to wait for it.
Respiratory infections in snakes are slow to resolve. Courses run for weeks rather than days, and stopping early because the animal looks better is how they come back.

When to get help
Same day:
- Open-mouth breathing, clicking, wheezing, or bubbles at the nostrils or in the mouth
- Regurgitation following a cold period
- A snake that stays limp or cannot right itself after several hours of rewarming
- Any burn, blister or discoloured patch after improvised heating
- Redness, swelling or yellow material in the mouth
Within the week:
- A missed shed or a shed that comes off in patches after a cold spell
- Continued food refusal once temperatures have been correct for two weeks
- A snake that has become noticeably less active than its own normal
Find a reptile-experienced vet and store the number now. General practices frequently do not see snakes, and a chilled tropical snake with a meal inside it is not the animal to be phoning around about at midnight.
