Shrimp failed molt: the white ring, and the water change that kills
A shrimp must build a new shell, split the old one behind the head and back out. When that fails the shrimp dies within a day. This guide explains the three phases of a moult and how each one fails, how to tell a shed shell from a dead shrimp, why large water changes and evaporation top-ups are the leading trigger, and why copper and insect-control chemicals are lethal to crustaceans at doses fish ignore.

Quick answer

A shrimp that has moulted cleanly goes straight back to grazing. Failure is almost always a water problem, not a shrimp problem.
A shrimp cannot grow inside its shell. It has to build a new one underneath, split the old one at the joint between the head section and the tail, and back out. When that sequence fails, the shrimp dies, usually within a day.
The overwhelming majority of failed moults trace back to the mineral content of the water changing too fast, and the single most common trigger is a large water change with water that does not match what is already in the tank.
- The classic sign is a white line across the back where the shell has split but the shrimp cannot get out. Once you can see it, the outcome is usually already decided.
- Do not try to help a stuck shrimp. Handling tears the soft new cuticle and pulls off limbs.
- Shell minerals come mostly from the water. Calcium in food supports the process but does not replace hardness.
- Deaths clustered 12 to 48 hours after every water change are the signature of a mineral swing, not of a disease.
- Copper and insect-control chemicals kill shrimp at concentrations that are harmless to fish, and they interfere with moulting specifically.

Never dose a shrimp tank with a copper-containing medication, a snail treatment, or anything intended to kill insects.
Shrimp are crustaceans. The chemistry that kills snails, planaria, fleas and mosquito larvae also kills shrimp, and copper in particular disrupts moulting directly. The common accidental routes are fish medications, plant fertilisers containing copper, aquarium snail treatments, insecticide spray drift in the room, hands treated with a spot-on flea product, and new plants that were grown or shipped with pesticide on them. A dose that a fish shrugs off can empty a shrimp tank.

What a moult actually involves
Understanding the sequence is what makes the causes obvious.
Pre-moult.
The shrimp reabsorbs calcium and other minerals from the inside of its existing shell and stores them, so it starts the moult with a reserve. Under the old shell it secretes a new, soft cuticle. The two layers then separate. The shrimp usually hides during this phase and eats little.
The split.
A weakened suture opens at the junction between the carapace, the fused head and thorax section, and the first segment of the abdomen. The shrimp flexes hard and reverses out through the gap, dragging the antennae, the eyes, the legs and the gills free.
Post-moult.
For a short period the shrimp is soft, defenceless and hiding. It absorbs water to expand the new shell to its larger size, then hardens it by depositing calcium carbonate, drawn from the stored reserve and from the water.
Every failure mode maps onto one of these three phases. Not enough mineral available means a shell that will not harden. Too rapid a change in the water means a moult forced at the wrong moment. A shell that has hardened too heavily, or a shrimp too weak from poor water or old age, means a split that cannot be forced open.
The white ring, and how to read it
The term describes a visible white or pale gap running across the back at the carapace-to-abdomen joint, in a shrimp that is still alive, usually in the open and flicking its tail repeatedly.
What it means is that the shell has separated but the shrimp cannot free itself. It is trapped in a rigid tube that no longer belongs to it, and it exhausts itself trying.
How this differs from a normal moult.
In a successful moult you never see the shrimp mid-split, because it happens quickly and in hiding. What you find is the empty shell afterwards.
How to tell a shed shell from a dead shrimp.
The shed shell is translucent and hollow. Held against the light it looks like glass. The eye stalks are empty transparent shells rather than black dots, the split at the front is visible, and there is no soft tissue inside. A dead shrimp is the opposite: opaque, and usually turned pink, orange or white through the body, because the muscle proteins have denatured. Dead shrimp are also eaten rapidly by tank mates, so a body that stays intact for hours is often a moult.
Why not to intervene.
Every instinct says to hold the shrimp and ease the shell off. The new cuticle underneath is soft and tears, the legs and antennae come away with the old shell, and handling adds a temperature and handling shock to an animal already at its limit. There is no home procedure that improves the odds.
The causes, in the order worth checking

The whole diagnostic kit: a way to measure the water, a way to match the replacement water, and a written record of what changed and when.
A mineral swing, usually from a water change.
This is the first thing to check and the most common answer. Shrimp osmoregulate against the mineral content of their water, and a sudden shift in general hardness or total dissolved solids is a physiological shock. It can force a moult before the new shell is ready, or leave the shrimp without the mineral supply to complete one.
The two directions both cause failures. Water that is too soft leaves the shrimp unable to build and harden a shell, and produces failed moults and soft-shelled animals. Water that is heavily mineralised, or that rises in hardness over time as you top up evaporation with tap water, produces a shell that is thicker and harder to split.
Top-up water, which almost nobody counts as a change.
Evaporation removes water and leaves the minerals behind. Topping up with tap water adds more minerals on top. Over weeks, hardness and dissolved solids climb steadily without a single water change being done. Top up with reverse osmosis or distilled water, and use remineralised water only when you are actually replacing volume.
Copper and insecticides.
Discussed above. Assume any medication not explicitly labelled shrimp-safe is not, and treat new plants as contaminated until they have been quarantined and rinsed.
Ammonia, nitrite and accumulated nitrate.
Shrimp are less tolerant than most community fish. Ammonia and nitrite indicate an immature or damaged filter and are acute problems. Chronically high nitrate is a slower one: it does not kill outright, it produces a tank where breeding stops, juveniles fail and adults die at each moult.
Temperature.
Warm water raises the metabolic rate and shortens the interval between moults, while holding less dissolved oxygen. A tank that runs hot in summer produces more moults with less margin for error in each one. Rapid temperature swings are themselves a moult trigger.
Nutrition.
Shell mineral comes mostly from the water, but the organic framework the mineral is deposited into comes from the diet. A tank fed only on one dry food, or a tank with almost no biofilm because it is scrubbed constantly, produces shrimp that moult poorly. Variety and a mature, biofilm-rich surface do more than any single supplement.
Age and injury.
Very old shrimp and shrimp that have lost limbs or been damaged in a previous moult have a higher failure rate. A single failure in an established tank with stable parameters is not necessarily a problem with the tank.
Species mismatch.
Neocaridina, the cherry shrimp group, want harder water. Caridina bee shrimp want soft, acidic water, usually over an active buffering substrate. Keeping them in one tank means one of them is permanently out of range, and the one out of range is the one failing to moult.
The failure modes of the usual advice
"Do a big weekly water change."
This is sound advice for a fish tank and it is the leading cause of dead shrimp. Large volumes of differently mineralised water swing the parameters faster than a shrimp can adjust. Do smaller, more frequent changes instead, match the temperature, and measure the replacement water before it goes in rather than after.
"Add cuttlebone or crushed coral for calcium."
These raise hardness and carbonate hardness slowly and unpredictably, and they push pH upward. In a Neocaridina tank they are a blunt but usable tool. In a Caridina tank they destroy the soft acidic conditions the species needs. The thing to aim at is a measured hardness value appropriate to your species, not the presence of an object in the filter.
"Feed a calcium supplement."
Useful at the margin, not a substitute for water hardness. If the water cannot supply mineral, food will not rescue the moult.
"Just help it out."
Covered above. It does not work.
"Quarantine new shrimp."
Worth doing, but it addresses the smaller risk. The bigger risks with new arrivals are the shock of moving between two different water chemistries, which needs slow drip acclimation over a long period, and the pesticide arriving on new plants.
"Salt or medication will treat it."
There is nothing to treat. A failed moult is a mechanical and physiological event, not an infection, and adding chemicals to a tank where shrimp are already stressed makes the next moult worse.
What to record when shrimp are dying

The target state: stable water, dense planting, plenty of surface for biofilm, and shrimp that moult without you noticing.
Shrimp problems are solved by pattern, not by a single reading. What matters is what changed and when.
What healthy moulting looks like
Empty shells appear regularly and are gone within a day or two because the shrimp have eaten them. Juveniles produce them frequently, adults less so.
Individual shrimp disappear from view for a while and reappear grazing normally.
Occasionally the whole tank becomes briefly frantic, with males swimming rapidly in the open. That is a female having just moulted and released a pheromone, and it is a sign of a healthy, breeding population.
Berried females carry eggs under the tail and fan them. They normally moult after the young hatch, not before. A berried female moulting early and dropping her clutch is a stress signal worth investigating.
What never to do
Do not remove the shed shells to keep the tank tidy. They are a mineral source the shrimp will use.
Do not perform a large water change to try to save a tank that is losing shrimp. If the losses followed a water change, another one is the same insult again.
Do not add medications intended for fish, snails, planaria or algae without confirming they are safe for crustaceans.
Do not put your hands in the tank after applying a flea or tick product, an insect repellent or a hand sanitiser.
Do not add plants straight from a shop into a shrimp tank. Rinse well and hold them in a separate container for a period first.
Do not chase a target number by dumping minerals in at once. Slow adjustment is the whole point.
Do not net a moulting or newly moulted shrimp. Soft shrimp are damaged by handling and by nets.

When to get help
There is rarely a vet involved in a shrimp tank, so the escalation path is different: it runs through measurement and through people who keep the same species in the same water.
Act immediately if you see deaths clustered after any change to the tank, if a whole population starts failing at the moult, or if you have any reason to think a copper-containing or insect-killing product has entered the system.
Move survivors only if you can put them into water you have measured and matched. Moving shrimp into unmatched water is the same mistake that caused the problem.
If losses continue with stable, correct parameters and no chemical exposure, take your full record to a specialist shrimp keeper or an aquatic veterinarian. A written log of hardness, dissolved solids, nitrate and dates is worth far more than a description of how the shrimp looked.
