The senior parrot eating less: access, vision, pain and disease
Ageing does not reduce a parrot's appetite; four groups of cause do. Quick answer
Before you ask why an older parrot wants less food, ask whether it can reach it, see it, and hold it.
Ageing does not reduce a parrot's appetite. Something else does, and in an older bird the causes divide into four groups: it cannot get to the food, it cannot see the food, it hurts to eat, or it is ill.
The first two are the ones owners miss, because a bird with arthritic feet or developing cataracts behaves exactly like a bird that has gone off its food. Both are also the easiest to work around once identified.
- Weigh in grams every day, at the same time, before the first meal. In birds the weight trend is the diagnosis long before anything is visible.
- Watch the bird actually eat. Parrots husk and drop seed, so a bird can appear to be feeding while consuming almost nothing.
- Count the droppings. A bird that is not eating produces few, small, dark droppings, and that is objective evidence.
- Do not attempt a diet conversion in an old or unwell parrot without veterinary supervision. Conversion carries a genuine starvation risk.
- Senior is species-relative. A budgerigar can be geriatric while a macaw of the same age is barely adult.

A parrot that has stopped eating entirely is an emergency, not a wait-and-see.
Birds have a very high metabolic rate and minimal energy reserve. A small parrot that eats nothing for a day can be in serious trouble, and a bird that is fluffed, quiet, sitting low on the perch or on the cage floor has usually been unwell for some time already. Combined with any breathing change, tail bobbing or a change in dropping colour, this needs same-day avian veterinary care.

Senior is species-relative
There is no single age at which a parrot becomes old, and treating them as one group produces bad decisions.
Budgerigars and cockatiels are short-lived by parrot standards and show age-related disease early. Conures, caiques and similar mid-sized species come next. Amazons, African greys, cockatoos and macaws routinely live for decades, and a bird of twenty may be middle-aged rather than geriatric.
What matters practically is the individual's own trajectory. A bird that is doing less than it did a year ago, taking longer to climb, choosing lower perches, or flying less, is ageing regardless of the number on its paperwork. That is the point at which annual checks become worthwhile and a weight log stops being optional.
Group one: it cannot get to the food
This is the most common reversible cause and the one least often considered.
Arthritis and foot pain. Older parrots develop joint disease in the feet, ankles and wings. A bird that cannot grip comfortably will not stand on a narrow perch by a hanging bowl to eat. It will pick at food it can reach from a comfortable position and ignore the rest.
Perch design. Older birds need wider perches, flat platforms, and a variety of diameters and textures. Uniform narrow dowel perches load the same points of the foot continuously and are hard for an arthritic bird to hold. Sandpaper perch covers make this worse, not better.
Cage layout. Food placed at the top of a tall cage, reachable only by climbing, effectively rations an older bird's intake. Move food stations down to where the bird actually spends its time, and provide more than one.
Bowl stability and shape. A shallow, heavy, stable bowl with a rim the bird can rest against is easier than a deep swinging one.
Competition. In a mixed or paired cage, an older bird may simply be losing access. Watch who eats first and for how long, and consider separate feeding stations.
Test this properly rather than assuming. Put an identical bowl of the same food on a wide flat platform next to the bird's favourite resting spot and see whether intake changes. If it does, you have your answer without a single test.
Group two: it cannot see the food
Cataracts develop in older parrots and are visible as a cloudy or whitish appearance in the pupil, best seen in good light from the side. Retinal degeneration also occurs and is not visible at all.
The behavioural signs are subtle. The bird misses when reaching for food. It feels for the perch with its beak before stepping. It is startled by movement that would not previously have bothered it. It becomes reluctant to move around the cage or to fly. It may become nippier, because it cannot see a hand approaching until it is close.
Practical adaptations are cheap and effective. Increase light levels around the food area. Use bowls that contrast with their contents, so pale pellets sit in a dark bowl and dark food in a pale one. Keep the cage layout constant, since a visually impaired bird navigates from memory and rearranging the furniture is genuinely disorienting. Announce yourself verbally before approaching.
An avian vet can examine the eyes properly, and vision loss also changes the safety plan for out-of-cage time.
Group three: it hurts to eat
Beak abnormality. An overgrown, flaking, misshapen or unusually soft beak in an older parrot is frequently a sign of underlying disease rather than a local problem, and liver disease is the classic cause. A bird whose beak no longer meets correctly cannot crush, shear or manipulate food efficiently. Beak trimming is a veterinary procedure and treating the beak without investigating why it changed misses the point.
Articular gout. Birds excrete nitrogenous waste as uric acid, and when kidney function declines, urate crystals can be deposited in the joints. The result is swollen toe and hock joints with pale or yellowish material visible under the thin skin, and a bird that shifts constantly, lifts its feet, and refuses to grip. It is one of the more painful conditions in avian medicine and it is often mistaken for simple arthritis.
Oral and sinus disease. Infection, vitamin A deficiency in long-term seed-fed birds, and masses in the mouth all make eating uncomfortable. A change in the smell of the breath, a swelling near the eye or nostril, or a bird that shakes its head while eating all point here.
Old injuries. A wing or leg injured years ago will develop arthritis around it.
Crop and gastrointestinal disease. A bird that eats and then brings food back up is a different problem and needs separate assessment.

Weigh the bird daily and the food in and out. Impressions are unreliable; grams are not.
Group four: it is ill
Atherosclerosis. Recognised as a common finding in older parrots, particularly in birds on high-fat seed diets with little opportunity to fly. Early signs are reduced tolerance of exertion, reluctance to climb or fly, and a bird that is slower to recover after activity. It is one reason an older parrot quietly does less.
Liver disease. Frequent in long-term seed-fed birds. Green or lime-coloured urates, an overgrown beak and nails, poor feather quality, and reduced appetite.
Kidney disease. Increased urine in the droppings, weakness, and the gout described above.
Tumours. Common in older birds of several species, including budgerigars. Weight loss with a variable appetite, abdominal swelling, or lameness from a mass pressing on nerves.
Reproductive disease in hens. Not confined to young birds. Chronic laying, egg binding and related disease occur in older hens and present with straining, a wide stance, abdominal swelling and reduced appetite.
Aspergillosis. A chronic fungal lung disease with a slow presentation: gradual weight loss, reduced exercise tolerance, a change in voice, and sometimes very little else until late.
Heavy metal poisoning. Worth naming because it affects birds of any age and is easily missed. Older birds chew cage hardware just as younger ones do.
Infection or systemic illness of any kind. In a prey species this may present only as a quieter bird that eats a little less.
Measure, do not estimate
Three home measurements convert a vague worry into evidence.
Daily weight in grams. Same time, ideally first thing before feeding, on a scale that reads to the gram. Train the bird to step onto a perch mounted on the scale. This single number outperforms every visual assessment of body condition, because feathers hide the keel completely.
Food in and out. Weigh the portion into the bowl and weigh what is left. Sieve out husks if the bird eats seed, because a bowl that looks full of seed may be full of empty shells.
Dropping count and appearance. White paper as a cage liner, changed at a fixed time, and photographed. A bird that is not eating produces fewer, smaller, darker droppings. Colour changes in the urate portion point at the liver or kidneys.
Watch a meal from a distance for a few minutes. Note whether the bird approaches the bowl, whether it picks food up, whether it manages to husk or crush it, whether it drops it, and whether it swallows. That sequence tells you which of the four groups you are in.

Food size and hardness matter to an older beak. If your bird leaves the hardest items, that is information rather than fussiness.
Adjusting the setup for an older bird
Warming food slightly raises its aroma and often increases interest. Chopping or briefly soaking hard items helps a bird with a compromised beak. Both are aids while a diagnosis is being reached, not substitutes for one.
The diet conversion trap
Many older parrots have eaten a seed-based diet for decades, and that diet underlies several of the diseases above. It is tempting to fix it immediately.
Do not, at least not without veterinary supervision. Parrots are strongly neophobic about food, and an old or unwell bird that refuses a new diet will simply not eat. Conversion attempts have killed birds, and the risk is highest in exactly the animals that most need converting.
The safe approach is slow, monitored and paired with daily weights. Introduce new items alongside the familiar diet rather than replacing it. Offer new food at the time of day the bird is hungriest, in a familiar bowl, and let the bird watch you or another bird eat it. Expect the process to take weeks or months. And stabilise any underlying illness first, because a bird being investigated for weight loss is not the bird to run a diet experiment on.
What the vet will want
Bring the weight log, with dates and times. Bring photographs of the droppings on white paper across several days.
Bring a video of the bird eating, filmed from a distance without interference, and a second video of it moving around the cage so gait, grip and balance can be assessed.
Bring photographs of the feet from below, of the beak from the side, and of the eyes in good light.
Bring the full diet history, including what the bird has eaten for most of its life, not just this month. Long-term seed feeding changes the differential list substantially.
Say whether the bird is a hen and whether it has ever laid. Say what it chews, including cage bars, clips, toys and jewellery. Say what has changed recently in the household, including the loss of a companion bird or a change of owner routine.
Expect blood tests, radiographs and, depending on findings, imaging of the heart and abdomen. In an older bird, a baseline set of results taken while it is relatively well is genuinely useful for interpreting later ones.
What never to do
Never accept eating less as normal ageing. In birds it is a symptom.
Never switch diet abruptly in an old or unwell parrot.
Never give grit. Hookbilled parrots shell their own seed and do not need it, and an unwell bird may gorge on it.
Never trim a beak at home. Beak shape in an older bird is often a clue to internal disease, and trimming without a diagnosis removes the clue and risks injury.
Never give human medications, supplements or herbal preparations without veterinary advice.
Never use sandpaper perch covers to manage nails in an arthritic bird. They abrade the skin of the foot that is already under pressure.
Never rearrange the cage of a bird with failing vision.
Never assume a bird sitting quietly at the bottom of the cage is resting.

The target is a stable daily weight, normal droppings, and a bird that reaches its food without difficulty.

When to get help
Go the same day for a bird that has stopped eating, is fluffed and quiet, is sitting low or on the cage floor, is bobbing its tail with each breath, has green or lime urates, or is a hen that is straining or abdominally swollen.
Book within the week for a weight trend that is falling, food picked up and dropped, poor grip, swollen toe joints, a beak that has changed shape or texture, cloudy eyes, or a bird that has quietly stopped flying and climbing.
Book an annual geriatric examination once your bird is old for its species, with blood work while it is well. In a species that hides illness this thoroughly, the baseline you take in a healthy year is what makes the abnormal year interpretable.
