Reptiles in a heatwave: the cool-down order, and the hot-season setup

Reptiles die faster from heat than from cold because they cannot sweat and because the margin above their preferred temperature is narrow. The danger is the loss of the cool end, not the peak basking figure, and a thermostat cannot fix it. This gives the staged signs, the cool-down order that avoids the shock caused by ice and cold water, the hot-season room and enclosure plan, and why an animal that appears to recover still needs a vet.

A settled lizard holds its mouth closed and its eyes open and clear. In hot weather the changes to look for are a mouth held open away from the basking lamp, a washed-out colour, and an animal that will not stay still.

Reptiles die of heat far more suddenly than they die of cold. A reptile kept too cool for a day usually recovers once it warms up. A reptile that overheats for an hour may not recover at all, and may die two days later from organ damage that started while it still looked alive and well.

The thing that kills is not the peak temperature at the basking spot. It is the loss of the gradient. When the room itself is warmer than the cool end should be, the animal has nowhere left to go, and no amount of switching heaters off will change that.

  • A thermostat can only remove power. Once the heaters are off and the room is still hot, the enclosure keeps climbing.
  • Reptiles cannot sweat. Their cooling is behavioural: shade, burrows, water and going nocturnal. A small enclosure removes all four.
  • Cool an overheated reptile gradually with room-temperature water and moving air. Never ice, never cold water, never a fridge.
  • Get the animal seen even if it recovers. Heat damage to gut, liver and kidneys declares itself over the following days.
  • In a hot climate, cool the room. Enclosure tweaks are not enough for a season that lasts months.

Never cool an overheated reptile with ice, iced water, cold-water immersion, a freezer or a fridge.

Rapid surface cooling causes the peripheral blood vessels to clamp shut, which traps heat in the core exactly when it needs to leave, and it drives an already stressed animal into circulatory collapse. Direct contact with ice also damages tissue.

Cool with water at room temperature, air movement and a cooler room. Aim for a steady decline over a period of time, not a rescue in ninety seconds.

Then stop before you reach the target. An ectotherm keeps losing heat to its surroundings after you stop intervening, and overshooting into hypothermia on top of heat injury makes the outcome worse.

Why heat is more dangerous than cold for an ectotherm

There is no internal cooling system.

Mammals sweat, pant with a large evaporative surface, and shunt blood to the skin. Reptiles have none of that at a useful scale. Some lizards gape to lose heat from the mouth and throat, and some species use limited cutaneous evaporation, but neither approaches what a mammal can do.

Wild reptiles solve heat behaviourally. They go underground, into deep shade, into water, or they shift their activity to dawn, dusk and night. Some aestivate through the hottest season entirely.

Every one of those options is a distance or a depth, and an enclosure has neither.

The margin is narrow, and the damage is not reversible.

The gap between a reptile's preferred body temperature and the temperature at which cellular damage begins is much smaller than the gap on the cold side. Cold slows a reptile down; heat denatures proteins and injures the nervous system, the gut lining, the liver and the kidneys.

That asymmetry is why an owner can find a chilled reptile, warm it, and have a normal animal by evening, while the same owner can find an overheated one, cool it, watch it improve, and lose it on Thursday.

Enclosures trap heat.

A vivarium is a small, insulated box designed to hold heat in. That is its purpose in winter and its problem in summer. Once the ambient room temperature rises above the intended cool end, the enclosure has no cool end. The animal moves from one warm place to another warm place looking for relief that does not exist in the box.

A thermostat cannot cool.

Thermostats only interrupt power. When the room is doing the heating, every heat source is already off and the number keeps climbing. Owners often report that "the thermostat was reading normal", which is true and irrelevant, because it was reading a probe on a heater that was not running.

Sunlight is in a category of its own.

Direct sun on glass produces a greenhouse. An enclosure that receives an hour of afternoon sun through a window in summer can reach lethal internal temperatures with everything unplugged. The same applies with much less time to a transport tub in a parked car, which is one of the commonest ways pet reptiles die in warm weather.

The signs, in order of severity

Early, and easy to dismiss.

Persistent occupation of the coolest part of the enclosure. Pressing flat against cool glass or a cool surface. Digging down into substrate. Refusing to bask at all. Restlessness, pacing and glass surfing. Long soaks in the water bowl by an animal that usually ignores it.

In many lizards, a paler, more washed-out colour than usual, which is the animal reflecting rather than absorbing heat.

Established.

A mouth held open away from the basking site, or continuously. Rapid, shallow breathing. Reduced responsiveness. Sitting still in a strange place rather than in a hide. In snakes, restless surface-seeking, and in chelonians, extended limbs held away from the shell and heavy breathing with the mouth open.

Note the differential that matters: a bearded dragon sitting under its lamp with its mouth open, calm and settled, is usually thermoregulating normally at the correct temperature. The same posture away from the lamp, or persisting after the animal has moved into shade, is not.

Emergency.

Loss of the righting reflex. Twitching, tremors or spasms. Frantic escape attempts followed by collapse. Limpness. Unresponsiveness. Sometimes a sudden burst of activity immediately before collapse, which owners describe afterwards as the animal seeming energetic.

Afterwards, in the days that follow.

Refusing food. Regurgitation. Abnormal droppings or none. Discoloured urates. Lethargy that gets worse rather than better. Sudden death on the second or third day.

This is why the veterinary visit is not optional, and why it should not wait for the animal to look ill again.

The cool-down order

Follow it in this sequence. The order matters because the first steps are free and the later steps carry their own risks.

One: kill the heat and light.

Switch off every lamp and heat source, including the UVB lamp, which contributes heat as well as ultraviolet.

Two: get the animal out of the box.

Move it to a ventilated container in the coolest room in the building, away from windows and away from the enclosure. A tiled floor, a north-facing room in the northern hemisphere or a south-facing one in the southern, a basement or a hallway are all better than the room the enclosure is in.

Do not put the container in a draught of cold air-conditioned air.

Three: move air.

A fan set to move air across the room, not blowing directly and continuously onto the animal, increases convective and evaporative loss. This is safe, gradual and effective.

Four: use water at room temperature.

For species that tolerate water, a shallow soak in room-temperature water, deep enough to reach the belly but never over the nostrils, and never unattended.

For species that do not tolerate soaking, damp cloths at room temperature laid against the container floor, or a light misting, work by evaporation.

Room temperature means the temperature of the cool room, not the temperature of the cold tap.

Five: offer water, do not administer it.

Put a shallow dish within reach. Never pour or syringe water into the mouth of a collapsed reptile. They aspirate readily, and aspiration pneumonia is a common cause of death in animals that survived the original emergency.

Six: stop early.

Stop active cooling while the animal is still slightly warm. Ectotherms continue to lose heat to their surroundings, and stacking hypothermia on top of heat injury worsens the outcome.

Seven: go to the vet.

Even a full apparent recovery. Ask specifically about supportive fluids and about monitoring for gut, liver and kidney injury over the following days.

Building a setup that survives a hot season

Short heatwaves and permanently hot climates need different answers, and most advice online is written for the first.

Placement is the biggest single decision.

Internal wall rather than external. Out of any path of direct sun at any hour of the day, checked in summer rather than in winter when the sun sits lower and reaches further into the room. Ground floor rather than top floor. Never a conservatory, a loft, a garage or a car.

Go and stand in the room at the hottest hour of the day, on a hot day, and take a reading at enclosure height. Most owners only ever assess the room when they are home in the evening.

Ventilation.

Air has to be able to leave, not just enter. Mesh tops with low-level vents allow convection to carry hot air out. A sealed glass tank with a solid lid in a hot room is the worst configuration available.

Reduce the heat you are adding.

In summer, run the basking source for fewer hours, and consider a lower-output basking lamp for the season.

Do not reduce UVB to reduce heat. If your heat and UV come from one lamp, the hot season is a good reason to separate them, so the UV schedule stays intact while the heat drops.

Cool the room, not the box.

Air conditioning where it exists. Otherwise, external shading on the window, blinds and curtains closed through the day, the room shut up while the outside air is hotter than the inside, and ventilated hard at night when it is cooler.

Do not aim an air conditioner or a fan straight into the enclosure. It dries the enclosure out unevenly and can chill one part while another stays hot.

Give the animal somewhere to escape to.

A deep substrate layer that a burrowing species can actually get into. A cool humid hide on the cool end, made from a closed container with damp moss and an entrance hole, which provides both a temperature refuge and a humidity refuge.

A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel, placed at the cool end and never in contact with the animal, provides a slow, passive cool spot. Replace it before it warms rather than adding more, and watch for condensation soaking the substrate.

Water.

A larger water dish in hot weather, changed often because warm water grows bacteria fast. Heat stress and dehydration arrive together, and the dehydration is often what tips an animal over.

Plan for the power cut in the heat, not just in the cold.

In a hot climate the failure that matters is the air conditioning, not the heater. Know in advance which room in your home stays coolest without power and how you would move an enclosure or an animal there.

Variation that changes the answer

Desert species.

Bearded dragons, uromastyx and similar animals tolerate high basking temperatures but survive their native summers by retreating into deep burrows where it is far cooler. In a shallow enclosure with no depth, that strategy is unavailable, and they overheat at temperatures their natural range exceeds every day.

Rainforest and montane species.

Crested geckos, many chameleons and other cloud-forest and rainforest species are damaged by temperatures a desert basker treats as routine. For these animals, a hot summer is a genuine annual threat and room cooling is not optional.

Nocturnal species.

Leopard geckos, many snakes and other nocturnal reptiles take warmth from surfaces at night and shelter by day. A hot day removes their daytime refuge, and they cannot compensate by shifting activity because they are already nocturnal.

Chelonians.

A shell is thermal mass. Tortoises and turtles heat slowly, which buys time, and then cool slowly, which means an overheated one stays overheated long after the environment improves. Outdoor tortoise pens with no permanent shade are a recurring summer fatality, and shade that works at noon may not exist at four in the afternoon.

Aquatic species.

Water heats too, and warm water holds less oxygen. In a heatwave, check the water temperature as well as the air, and shade any outdoor pond.

Individual factors.

Gravid females, juveniles, obese animals, and animals with existing respiratory or kidney disease all have less margin. So does any animal that is already dehydrated.

Do not use ice, iced water, a cold bath, a fridge or a freezer to cool a reptile.

Do not leave a reptile in a parked vehicle, in any weather that is not cold.

Do not blow a fan or an air-conditioning outlet directly into a humidity-dependent species' enclosure.

Do not respond to heat by misting heavily in a poorly ventilated enclosure. High heat plus trapped humidity is a respiratory disease combination.

Do not pour or syringe water into the mouth of a collapsed reptile.

Do not skip the veterinary visit because the animal recovered.

My bearded dragon sits under the lamp with its mouth open. Is it overheating?
Usually not. Gaping under the basking lamp, in a calm, settled animal, is normal thermoregulation at the correct basking temperature. What is not normal is gaping away from the lamp, gaping that continues after the animal has moved into shade, gaping combined with restlessness or pressing against cool glass, or gaping in a species that does not normally do it. Measure the cool end when you see any of those.
It is 40 degrees outside and I have no air conditioning. What actually helps?
Room-level measures, in this order: shade the window from outside, close the room while the outside air is hotter than the inside, ventilate hard overnight, move air with a fan at room level, and reduce the heat you are adding by shortening basking hours. Inside the enclosure, add depth to burrow into, a cool humid hide, a larger water dish, and a towel-wrapped frozen bottle at the cool end that the animal cannot touch directly.
How long can a reptile be too hot before there is damage?
Far less time than owners expect, and it depends on species, size and how far above the safe range it went. A vivarium in direct sun can become lethal within an hour. Chelonians take longer to heat because of their mass and are therefore slower to show it and slower to recover. Treat any known overheating as significant rather than trying to judge whether it lasted long enough to matter.
My reptile overheated but seems completely fine now. Do I still need a vet?
Yes. This is the specific pattern that catches people out. Cooling resolves the visible crisis while heat injury to the gut lining, liver and kidneys progresses quietly. Animals commonly deteriorate on the second or third day, and supportive treatment given early works far better than treatment started once organ failure is obvious.

When to get help

Contact an exotics veterinarian immediately for:

  • Any reptile that is limp, unresponsive, twitching, or cannot right itself
  • Any reptile found in an enclosure or container that was in direct sun
  • Continuous gaping, or laboured breathing, that does not settle with cooling
  • Any known overheating event, even with apparent full recovery

Contact them within the following days for:

  • Refusing food, regurgitation, or abnormal or absent droppings after a heat event
  • Discoloured or unusually thick urates
  • Lethargy that deepens rather than improves over 48 hours

Bring this to the appointment:

  • The highest temperature you measured, where you measured it, and with what
  • How long the animal was exposed, as accurately as you can
  • What cooling you used, for how long, and at what water temperature
  • Species, age, weight, and when it last ate, drank and passed droppings
  • Whether the enclosure was in sun, and whether there had been a power or air-conditioning failure
  • A photograph of the enclosure and its position in the room

The measurement detail matters more than it sounds. Vets treat heat injury supportively and the decisions about fluids and monitoring depend on how severe the exposure was, which only you can describe.
