Why surface temperature is the number that matters
Reptiles do not warm themselves. They collect heat from their surroundings, either from above like a basking lizard under sun, or from below like a snake on warm ground.
That is why air temperature readings mislead. A lamp can leave the air at a reasonable figure while the rock directly under it sits far hotter, and a heat mat can leave the air cool while the glass above it is dangerous.
The animal touches the surface, so the surface is what you measure. An infrared thermometer pointed at the basking spot and at the floor over any mat gives the two numbers that actually protect the animal.
The burn mechanism is specific to reptiles. Heat receptors are concentrated on the dorsal skin, so a snake lying on an overheated mat may register comfort from above while the underside is being damaged.
There is no reflex that reliably pulls the animal off. This is why reptile burns are frequently found long after they happened.
Cold works differently and more slowly. Below the species range, gut motility falls, food already eaten can ferment, and the immune response weakens, so a chronically cold enclosure produces regurgitation, poor sheds, and infection rather than an obvious injury.

Retained shed on toes and tail tips is worth checking at every shed, because a constricting band can cut off circulation and cost the animal a digit.
Scales over a basking contact area should not look different from the scales around them. A patch that is darker, paler, wrinkled, or shiny compared with its neighbours deserves attention.
For turtles, examine the plastron, since that is the surface resting on the basking platform.

Do not run any heat source without a thermostat, including products sold as low wattage or safe.
Do not peel a blister, remove crust, or pick at damaged scales. That converts a closed injury into an open one.
